A dry bright and cool start. I was planning on switching to winter tyres this weekend but the metoffice 10 day trend has put me off.

Both ECM and GFS forecasts have our area largely between 0C and 8C as far out as the forecast currently goes. Wife's new car got a full set of all season fitted this week as we both tend to run those all year round now.

Currently on the A90 heading south to visit oldest son in Hexham for the weekend. Lovely day, sunny with very little cloud around. 9Cjust north of Brechin.

Lovely day, almost unbroken sunshine with a steady NW wind making it feel colder than the 7c on the thermometer.

See the BGS have issued a aurora alert for tonight and tomorrow.  Clear skies forecast for here, what could possibly go wrong 🤨

Not much in the Met Office daily forecast that warrants sticking on the winters just yet. Mind you, theses daily forecasts have been hit or miss for a while.

Skies are very clear but no sign at all of any aurora yet. Perhaps it is still to come or not as strong as predicted. Temp currently -0.3C and falling.

Lovely morning here too which is fine to see as the forecasted overnight/morning fog did not materialise.   Hope that the the same can be said for the rest of the week (and beyond) as the first sun forecasted to appear here is  next Friday following a week of grey skies, single figures and light rain.

Anyhoo, enjoy today's pic as it looks as if it will be the last for a while!

Hard frost thus morning and a temperature inversion over Falkirk. Glorious now. Have done the final cut of the grass (hopefully) swept up a wheelie bins worth of leaves and now sitting with my feet up. Mr Snowidea is off to Glasgow tonight with our daughter to see Louis Tomlinson 😂🤣. He drew the short straw.

Took the 'Western road' oot ae Insch the day tae join the A96 before Huntly.

Wis a sheet ae ice. Could feel the car stairtin tae twitch oan the bends at any sort ae speed and that's wi 'all seasons' snawflaked tyres oan.

Nae been gritted ah guess. Rain + frost = black ice.

EDIT. Wisnae a soul oan it. As we reached the A96, saw a car which had come oantae the road seem tae turn aroond and heid back. Cannae help but wonder whit it wouldae been like wioot ma all season tyres!

Frosty start at -2.8c and for first time this autumn the frost never cleared from the shade and thickened again this evening. Looks soggy tomorrow though.

You know winter is approaching when Edinburgh Live publishes it's first story quoting Exacta Weather's James Madden 🤣😂

20mm of rain since 9am this morning, a lot of local roads in the city are flooded / deep water

Very wet here this morning. Given the amount of surface water and roads flooded in parts of the West of Edinburgh I'm surprised there was no yellow warning in place.

Pelting it down when I left work around 4pm in Westhill, which made for a truly awful drive home. Lots of standing water on the roads between Westhill and Tillyfourie, but not too bad after that. Not the worse flooding I've seen in recent weeks, but at least then you could see it. Tonight in the continuing rain and dark you were right on top of the deep puddles before you had time to see them.

Give me cold, bright and frosty any time over this muck.

Drizzly and damp all day with light rain this evening This being driven on by another east wind.If these east winds are still around in a months time then some snow should be falling even at low levels

Found this over on the Winter discussion thread. Matt Hugo shares his thoughts on how winter 23/24 might unfold.

Something for everyone...

No wind, little rain here. I think we have a Weather Free Zone around Ancrum!

That road often seems worse than others round about for some reason although even the well gritted main road between Oyne and Insch had a big icy patch in the usual place where it crosses the railway - definitely made the pickup squirm!

There is often good XC skiing in the Gartly woods near the top though, it holds the snow well and there's not too many steep hills so good for beginners or hopeless folk like me!

Long drive down to Scarborough broken up by hotel in Gretna Monday evening. Timed it right with worse of the winds just to south. Took good pic of Storm Debbie just as approached Gretna. Did rain all the way down and all the way back though.
