Just cold rain in Edinburgh city centre the NE influence is probably too warm coming off the sea.

Inland and areas with modest height will see snow

Back home now. Good to hear all the reports etc. just cold and dry here. -6.1 the low overnight.

It's pretty minging. Not expecting anything at home later either. The uppers were never modelled to be low enough for anywhere exposed to the coast. Only November

Back home now at Straiton and it’s snowing here but quite wet snow. Looking like the snow level is around 100+ metres if you are exposed to the coast

All and all a pretty lovely day today. Cold, temps didn't get above freezing until after midday when the light snow started falling again. I could see a low winter hazy sun through the snow clouds, it looked pretty special. What a start to a coldie lovers winter and its still not winter yet.

Just a dusting this morning here followed by heavy sleet showers all day. Very raw so took in cows and calves for winter instead of this coming weekend.⁰

 2 pneumonia vaccines  for calves  Hoping we will get a few days of cold to stop them sweating when they are newly inside . Humidities should drop off a bit round New Year and that helps the lungs as well. Ploughing old grassland today stubble too wet.

Temperatures dropped to well below freezing across the UK, as snow fell in Scotland and east England.

By way of comparison, the coldest November temperature was set on 14-11-1919 when Braemar hit -23.3c.

2hr 45min commute home this evening. The Midlothian rush hour was a complete mess. All roads were black at Straiton, went in to M&S (I'm posh me), came out and there had been 20 minutes of graupel after the earlier sleet and everything white, followed by another half hour of flakes. Auchendinny complete gridlock as northbound traffic couldn't get up the hill and southbound blocked as the tailback went through the two single track bridges. Then of course there's the 19mph driver of a Fiat 500 (hospital green) to contend with on 60 roads. Optimum speed was 37mph in the end - ruts and crunchy crunch. No gritter to be seen and all grit must've washed off from earlier sleet.... A heady mix!

Light snow flurry at the minute but overall a non-event as we're too exposed to the coast. 850's just weren't low enough. Further inland and only a few miles away have done better.

We have a Robin called Rab that comes to say hello when I'm in the gairden. I put up a special bowl for ground feeders who can't naturally grab on. Robins are so curious, especially if you are the person that brings food.

When we moved in, the hamlet was totally empty of garden birds for some reason. I waited for about 4 weeks before the first little bluebird discovered it. Then the word (or tweets) spread about my feeder and soon our hamlet was full of song.

Can now sit just 30 cm from them at the hame office windae and they happily feast away. Rab often turns up and watches when we are doing stuff in the gairden.

A bit warmer than forecast now. 1.8C.  Snowfall still hanging on - just..... Beautiful night all the same. Vastly better than whats gone before.

Note the kink in the 1010 isobar which should be pretty close where the North sea convective bands develop, I expect Thursday is the main day however Icon starts this by Wednesday 

Now main influence and question is when this flow starts it's transition to north northeasterly I'm thinking the alignment of streamers present as this begins that's the areas thatl do best here and a nudge further into central parts still at play however I think Fife especially Northeast --> Southeast, battle of me and @Hawesy Moray coast into Inverness and into the forth bringing the lothians and toward Edinburgh into the game

 

 

Regardless once this system moves away its ice day Category into the weekend

Ice days and below avg temps day & night become the story into this weekend could get a small system near to West Scotland though the modelling depicts this as rain and probably doesn't make inroads really

Quite a queue of showers skirting the coast to hit Edinburgh on that NE wind. Good it's starting to stick.

Don't switch your eyes just yet.......

The Eastern half of the central belt might just be in for a wee surprise tonight. 

The direction of flow for the showers has been gradually swing round from the NE over the last few hours. 

2 hour difference is clear : 

Just needs to swing a wee bit more before there on a good bearing for coming into the central belt and there plenty shower activity showing in the North Sea the for it: 

The overall strength of flow isnt drastic so showers are fizzling out fairly quickly as they push inland but some small continuing adjustments could see some Eastern parts of the central belt getting a covering

Car said -6 this morning when I left for work. Said 0 when I came in earlier with a bit of cloud but certainly feels like it is dropping now the sky is clear.

On a separate note, any recommendations for a home weather station that is decent enough but doesn’t cost the earth?

Don't have one myself to recommend but plenty of advice here
