Someone posted a link for temperatures in another thread I think -10.3c was recorded somewhere in Lancashire.

Gosh that is notable. Lancashire not renowned for recording coldest temps.

I believe the figure at Shap was -8.7C. The wife's cousin, in hills SW of Edinburgh, told us they hit -10C but I don't know how or where it was recorded.

Officially, it's Shap with -8.7C according to the Met Office.

I see Sweden has recorded its coldest November temperature in 30 years with -37.4C recorded at the weekend.

Braemar recorded -8.9C this morning, so that's the coldest temperature of the winter so far.

Braemar colder again at -9.1C so that's the coldest temperature now to beat.

Good to see some activity in this thread again. Good chance somewhere in Highlands will see double digit minus figure before month is out under a cold slack airstream.

wow network showing -9.1C near Ballater already and -5.9C near Aboyne. -7.4C near Tomintoul and -7.2C near Carrbridge. I'm not sure what altitude these are at and I presume lying snow is at play. In England, there's a -3.6C half way along the M4.

Tomintoul sits at 340 meters asl, Braemar is around 330 meters asl. Ballater and Aboyne are both lower.

There may well be lying snow after todays falls.

Braemar's lowest point is around 330 metres and maxes out at 375 metres. Tomintoul's lowest point is around 330 metres and maxes out around 355 metres from what I can see. I remember spending hours checking out the elevation of various highland villages last year, purely out of curiosity.

Suspect the 375m asl is at the back of Braemar, caravan park?

Chapel Brae, just off Mar Road - If you click on the link and select 'free text' and type in Braemar, Chapel Brae on the western part of Braemar is the highest part and there's quite a few houses up that brae. Looks like there's approximately 20+ houses that are over 360 metres and maxes out at 375.

Couple of quick snap shots...

The highest building or house in Tomintoul is 358 metres asl. Braemar has quite a few houses higher than this.

Ok. So they are high and snowy then. The more traditional, lower-level flagbearer, Aboyne (140m), is headed for the new seasonal low then. After a high of -1.3C this afternoon, it had -8.4C at 8pm.  There should be plenty of interesting figures to assess in the morning.

I reckon sub -10c tonight, one local station already at -5c.

Deep snow covered glens of Scotland will get low providing cloud and wind stay away.

Just spoke to Lee over at Highland Weather and there was too much cloud overnight, not even close to the expected -12° that the Met Office were quoting. Here are the National minimums not including Met O stations.
