I know it was 🥶 I’ll second that as I was in Monkspath at 8am working in an empty property with no heating…..it was Baltic 🥶🤣

Back again there tomorrow 🫣 this time I’m taking 5 woolly hats and ten coats 😁

-4.8 was quite a surprise, canal hasnt iced over though, possibly due to the dew point.

Even with not much snow, this winter has been impressive for cold and frosts. Wonder if this SSW can help us get a decent snow event before the winter is finished. Ill be watching until mid/end of March.

So far this month has seen a glorious spell of weather around here.

Sunny days and frosty nights with almost calm conditions.

Great for walks and it has enabled me to give the lawn it's first light cut.

Got a feeling we may see more cloud towards the weekend but it's been great so far.

If we can't get snow then this is a decent second prize.

A bit milder here today after last nights cloud prevented the temperature from dropping too low. (Around 0.0C)

Cloud cleared early to leave a nice sunny day, It made the golf very enjoyable, but in the sheltered shady sections by the woods the ground was still rock hard - even though no frost was visible. It seemed as if a ground frost was developing around midday. A bit odd really. I think it must have been radiative cooling which had prevented the ground warming up.

Looking forward (like most) to this pleasant spell continuing.

Looks like another frost tonight

from memory I reckon about 40 ground frosts since mid November ?

could any friendly member confirm this ?

even non frost days it has been cold / cool, without the couple of really balmy mild spells , we could have seen a really low avg winter temp 🧐🥶

More cloud around this morning..

Temperatures still fell to a minimum of -2.1C overnight with a widespread frost.

Nobbie - I am checking back on the ground frosts, but the data is not readily available.

I have just counted 31 air frosts that have occurred around here in central Solihull  (though in  a bit of a frost hollow), 18 of which have been below -2.0C, so a moderate frost,

13 have been below -4.0C so a hard frost.   Lowest was -7.1C back in December.

I suspect that more rural areas may show even colder numbers.

This winter has had  a below minima, but just above average maximum in many places in the south of the country.

Still treads like there's frost in my lawn.

I'm not a gardener, however I had new turf laid last Spring, should I be cutting it in February?

If it looks long enough.

No hard and fast rule really .I raised the cut height on my mower and waited until the afternoon when the frost and dew had lifted.

It did need a light trim as I had left it longer this Winter as this helps to keep the moss down.

Since yesterday, it has been cloudy with little to no sun to be seen. Not really complaining as we have had plenty of sunshine this winter so I am happy enough for now. 🙂
