Almanac for 9th February

The highest daily mean (1772-2021) was 11.4 in 1831; since then the highest mean was 11.2 from 1903, with 11.0 from 1933, but after that only 9.8 from 1939 and 9.7 from 1941. Other mild readings include 10.5 in 1899, 9.7 in 1805 and 1856, 9.5 in 1839 and 1980, 9.4 in 1779, 9.2 in 2002, and 9.1 in 1961. This is one of the least productive showings for the "modern" warming era in any list so far. The interval of 8-10 Feb has not produced many daily mean readings much higher than 9 C.

The lowest daily mean (1772-2021) was -8.8 in 1816, the lowest for the month. This prevailed over the -7.3 from 1895 which would otherwise have been part of a five-day record cold run (6th-10th) similar to late Jan 1776. Other low daily means were -6.3 in 1855, -5.0 in 1847, -3.8 in 1991, -3.6 in 1919, -3.3 in 1773, -3.2 in 1917, -2.8 in 1870, and -2.7 in 1864 and 1900.

The highest maximum (1878-2021) was 14.1 in 2008, which replaced 13.6 from 1899. Other mild days include 13.4 in 1982, 13.0 in 1903, 12.8 in 1933, 12.3 in 1939, 12.1 in 2020, 11.8 in 1912, 11.6 in 1931, 11.4 in 1913, and 11.3 in 1950.

The highest minimum (1878-2021) was 9.4 in 1903; since then the highest has been 9.2 in 1933 with 9.0 in 1941. Other mild minimum readings were 8.3 in 2002, 7.9 in 1980, 7.7 in 1961, 7.4 in 1899 and 7.3 in 1939.

The lowest maximum (1878-2021) was -1.8 in 1895 (1816 was likely several degrees lower though). Other cold values were -1.5 (1991), -1.2 (1985), -0.1 (1887), 0.1 (1940), 0.5 (2012), 0.6 (1919), 0.8 (1978), 0.9 (1927), 1.3 (1986), and 1.5 (2021). 1947 had 1.8 which was the highest temperature from 26th Jan to 24th Feb in that exceptional cold interval.

The lowest minimum (1878-2021) was -12.9 in 1895.  Other cold minima include -8.4 in 1917, -7.8 in 1919, -7.7 in 1900, -6.1 in 1991, -4.8 in 1969, -4.4 in 1986, -3.8 in 1942, and -3.5 in 1902.

The wettest 9th of February (1931-2021) in the EWP data was 21.16 mm (2009), followed by 16.42 mm (1977), 13.65 mm (1958), 13.34 mm (1950), 13.32 mm (2020), 11.87 mm (1953), and 10.96 mm (2007).

The wettest week ending 9th February (3rd - 9th Feb) was 53.00 mm in 2014, followed by 49.41 mm (2001) and 48.67 mm (1980).

The least amount falling in a week ending 9th February was 0.18 mm (1975), followed by 0.26 mm (1971), 1.05 mm (1967), 1.20 mm (1964), 1.24 mm (1934), 1.46 mm (1965), and 1.56 mm (1993).

-----------------------------

(Today's map link is for 1903, the second day of record mild temperatures (confined to the high minimum by the 9th)).

First report on the EWP, currently around 20 mm, GFS ten-day grid average about 35 mm (more north, less south), and days 11-16 look to add perhaps 10-15, so would likely be around 65-75 mm by almost the end of the month.

The CET looks likely to drop gradually over the next four or five days to around 6.0 then stabilize in a milder interval lasting several days. Longer range output looks "fast westerly" with some hints of higher pressures near end of the runs recently, not much consistency run to run, so not much reason to think that the CET once stable around 6 would change much thereafter.

This is one of those unusual spells where the 1991-2020 running CET is lower than 1981-2010, the situation begins to reverse after the 13th and eventually 1991-2020 finishes 0.5 ahead of the 1981-2010 average.
