The heat haters club 2022

Message added by Paul,

This thread is for those who don't enjoy the heat to discuss that and offer support to each other through the summer months. If you don't feel similarly and don't have any empathy for those who do, please don't post in here.

Off topic, but yes it is. South Wales is a bit of a dive in comparison to W/NW/N Wales with places along the M4 like Newport, Bridgend, Merthyr etc.

But Pembrokeshire 💗 Didn’t want to leave

Sounds like a very sensible idea. You’ll certainly notice a difference in summer temperatures

I wonder how long it will take for these factors to make themselves felt in property prices. A few more 'summers' with heatwaves on the scale we are seeing now and I can see an enterprising estate agent saying "Superbly situated xxxx, highest recorded temperature over past 10 years is 30C. Of course the opposite is that people will abandon cities, particularly London where its size creates a heat island anyway, more so with night time temps. Or may be along the French model, where people tend to abandon Paris during July and August if they can.

N Wales is stunning 🤩 The only downside is the roads are not the best so it takes a while to get anywhere. S Wales is a lot better in that respect. Scotland is absolutely gorgeous, too. Usually cooler in summer than Wales which means I couldn’t live there (I could live in Wales), but the scenery, some beautiful towns and cities, islands, coasts, and of course the people make it very special.

The ex’s family cottage was off a beaten track around Llanfachreth.  Absolutely pitch black at night though!  Such a beautiful peaceful place.

I read a tip that can be useful when it comes to using fans in a room. Instead of placing them randomly, or in front of a window, the best bet can often be to have them facing an open door (eg blowing out of the door), so that moves air from the room and in through the window.

Obviously, that may come in more useful at night during the upcoming spell, as you're not going to want to pull in air with a temperature into the mid-high thirties or so from outdoors during the day.

Agreed.  However, I could easily live in Scotland and did consider moving to the Highlands but came to the conclusion it would be too far from family!  I chose Shropshire and am only 7 miles from the Welsh border, so stunning all round!

Shropshire is lovely.  Spent a few years riding horses around Wenlock Edge.  Mum and I contemplated selling up both our properties and moving to Shropshire but it never happened as the daily commute to West Brom for work was a bit steep and I had 3/4 years to go until I could retire.  Looked at barn conversions as far as Ludlow but the favourites were Church Stretton and a hamlet called Plaish.  I was put off the one at Plaish in the end as the neighbour was a bigwig in the local fox hunt - no go area with me I’m afraid.

Myself and my Wife, who is also my Carer, have got our hearts set on a move to a Bungalow, a few Miles in land from the West Sussex Coast.

Anything to escape the heat and humidity of our "Dolls House" sized property here in S. E. London.

I reached State Pension age last Year and my Wife is 10 Years younger than me, and we don't want to be spending our Retirement, in the concrete Jungle that is London. Hopefully, we can get our move sorted before too many more, of these stifling Summers.

Regards,

Tom.  👍 😓

i escaped the hell hole that is SE London after the summer of 1994..i used to live at the top of Lewisham near to Brockely station..that summer particularly July was a bit toasty..wouldn't want to be there now that's for sure.

Some truly shocking temps now becoming reality, had my first plus 40c working conditions this week with very high humidity(forced), medical kit is already failing, the start of next week with out doubt now will be a true nightmare, i can easily see 50c plus working conditions. It is beyond me why folk like this weather, totally beyond my comprehension. So many negatives and no positives.

yes i have concerns now. My school hasn't done it's risk assessment,  still no running water in my daughters side of the school and even my husband is saying if nothing is done we are pulling our daughter out.  I'm worried about him too and i certainly don't want to be out in the sunshine in high 30's.

The water thing is disgusting. Major heat wave and getting the classrooms ready to be painted is more important than making sure the kids have a toilet or a way to refill their bottles without waiting for a teacher to escort them over to the main building.

I can't even..

Well GFS us now up to 39C to 41C very possible with +23 to +25 air across the parts of the country. GFS tends to be on the low side but then it's never had to protect

Our UNI is holding graduation days I expect a lot of people passing out due to the heat. ideally they should cancel it.

Placing of fans. The last place you want them is sucking the hot air during the day. Windows closed black out curtains fairly useful and should be closed.Otherwise normal curtains closed. If you've got good double or triple glazing you may be okay at that point. Open the windows when the outside temperature drops below the temperature of your house and then place the fans to circulate the air ideally place them where the breeze is coming into the house and direct the flow out the other side.

I'm also going to put foil on the windows silver side out and hopefully that will help as well. I'll let you know how it goes.

I'm also going to use laptop instead of my PC.

Yup 100% right. I would also write to the council and contact your MP criminal plus your local paper.  This is neglect almost. Won't get anything done before hand but some people may pay the price if anything serious occurs.

As in reducing water consumption or jumping in lakes.

The other bug issue is the 12 hr wait in A and E if you've got heat stroke you ain't going to survive in a back of an ambulance

Yes over this side Pennine reservoirs are about 50% capacity according to our water company united utilities. We're going to be in real trouble if it's not a wet August and Autumn especially with people using more water in the heat. Dreading this upcoming heat mate, feels like before going under anaesthetic for surgery. Unfortunately no chance of this downgrading now to something more civilized.

It's unlikely but we have had drastic changes at short notice before.

The reliable timeframe I'd think is quite short for unstable plume events generally, whereas things are more predictable for flatter zonal patterns so a longer reliable period. In this type of event, it's almost closer to a "now-cast" situation. A slight adjustment to the plume, or to cloud cover, that remains consistent from run to run can make a lot of different to what is experienced, over just a couple of days

Well, we can hope then based on this. But whatever happens, it's going to be a toasty few days regardless of records going or whatever.

Very uncomfortable, and not even a decent breakdown to make it worth it.

Just a terrible blast of heat that wont last long enough to make climate change deniers realise they are wrong but will be hot enough for a few days to make every uncomfortable and dangerous enough for some.

This is a good idea actually, early in the week the fan was only good at cooking for an hour but I went for windows open. I may try closing curtains and windows.

..

It’s annoying that we moved from Fri-Sun to Mon-Tues.

I just emailed our Health safety manager at work asking if he's done a risk assessment. I bet he hasn't.

I know the directors are having a jolly on one of the days under guise of an away day. They need to be booked into a room without air con so they know what other people are experiencing.

Mine are having a meeting about it. So far, it's just a normal day.... so many have no clue how hard outdoor jobs will be in this. I'm expecing infrastructure issues too.

I'm potentially meant to be at a hospital carpark bringing new equipment online but I will raise a question about them wanting me to attend, if they declare a heat emergency.

It's going be three long and difficult days unfortunately... I don't know about you all but I'm already sick and tired of this summer.

Looking forward to some rain and cooler days.
