It looks like the anomalies have dropped quite a bit with the current more unsettled spell around the UK:

Its still rather warm, but generally no more than 2C above average now for the most part. I guess having a low pressure anchored out to the west stirring up the waters has some good points!

How deep do these anomalies run below the surface few metres? As I understand it it’s a shallow layer of exceptional relative warmth?

An active Atlantic period with multiple deep depressions in the autumn will probably be enough to churn the water over and dampen the anomalies.

Seems to have been the case. The excessive anomalies were very shallow.

Wonder what the temperature anomaly is (if we have one) to a depth below the surface.

Wasn’t the cold blob in the Atlantic rather big in 2015? About 1000 miles or so directly to our west. Was talk it could usher in a cold winter and it was exceptionally mild and wet if I remember correctly.

Similar to what we experienced in this area on Tuesday. Winds coming off the supposedly warm Atlantic, and Little Rissington in Gloucestershire only reached 12.5c. Brize Norton around 13.8c.

I'm definitely sensing a huge connection as the hottest SSTs lately have been right at the long island area you can see the hot pathway up the east coast and along the area of big shiver of sharks

A 15-year-old was bitten near Fire Island the day before, in the first incident to be reported by Suffolk County authorities this summer, per CNN.

Strangely enough, lots of people have been showing snaps of the lovely Florida seas and saying how green they are....the plankton are suffering....and the coral bleaching should see off the remaining 10% of the reefs in the Caribbean this Summer.

The sea is becoming greener due to changes in plankton populations, analysis of Nasa images finds

Does anyone know the reference period these temperatures refer to? How many years of data are reflected in the global mean?
