Just seen a last minute drop in temps -8c 🥶 not quite beating Dec 22 but close maybe a chance of a few flurries ❄️ later this evening before mild, wet & windy returns for the weekend - Sunday into Monday still looking nasty with 60-70mph winds.

00z GFS and WRF looking quite promising for later @Chris.R is it the 2km model you look at and rate? That one shows quite a heavy batch of snow showers moving through the NW.

Arome, Arpege and Harmonie all have the showers too but perhaps more isolated/lighter.

UKV shows nothing except for the Wirral coast.

Again a good test of the high-res models. The MetO aren’t interested as their model isn’t going for it.

Not expecting much if anything here but if WRF is correct you never know! I was reading about the WRF model and it is allegedly very good at predicting convective events/precip.

This time 10 years ago, we were in depths of the worst "winter" in terms of wintriness probably for at least a century.  Just 3 air frosts during the whole of the meteorological winter. A Manchester winter index of just 7

Wow, that was the winter from hell for anyone who enjoys wintry weather. We've had more wintry weather this week then we did in the whole of that meteorological winter

Currently -9.5°C

Yes awful winter for low levels but the best I've witnessed for the mountains. The lakeland fells did well but I climbed Ben Nevis in March 14, it was like the alps, snow metres deep, huge cornices and massive avalanches.

Yep. it is usually very good but have to say it hasn't been brilliant this week. should be good with the flow directions and temperatures -aloft and such though.

-9C this morning. Coldest January night since 2010, even beating the cold January 2013 and 2021 which saw longer periods of cold but nothing close to -9C.

Been a belting cold spell. Widespread frosts and some good snow as well. If only Jan was for just these last 2 weeks. Would have been a very cold month! It's these pesky mild periods which seem to be so mild nowadays. Whatever's going on with the weather, my neck of the woods been good for snowfalls for a few years now

Just done a few checks and Manchester has had decent snowfalls for 6 out of last 7 years. Maybe the lack of easterlies in recent years is  our friend!!🤔

Well I think we’ve bottomed out at -10.4°C. Again we had that last minute drop just before sunrise, does anyone know why that happens?

Not so keen using this term "we are way overdue",  but from a statistical point, we are way over due a notably cold February. Last such one was February 1991.

We have had   January 2010, December 2010 and  even March 2013 but we've not had a February of similar equivalence in terms of temperature anomaly.

Yes, February's are truly awful nowadays. Fingers crossed and let's hope the weather behaves. My optimism based on credible forecasts for Feb. As to how cold though, not sure. Feb 18nwas memorable but I as all about 1 week though really
