A few more images since we got back to Dalwhinnie. Let the wife drive the back road from a Crubenmore to Dalwhinnie for a bit of snow driving practice. Thankfully the snow was like dust and was just flying over the bonnet as we ploughed through.

Poor old Calum on the BBC Reporting Scotland weather at lunchtime explaining that the computer models got it totally wrong for this morning. "Complex feature", is the explanation. Then proceeded to present further computer modelling for this afternoon and evening that's all a busted flush. He must be rather embarrassed as should MeteoGroup.

Im not sure any of them got today forecast correctly

Began as a wintry mix but transferred into heavy snow I'm thinking there's probably a warm layer to some degree which can happen which causes the difference between snow, graupel, freezing rain and sleet with reports of all of these over recent days and very evident on radar.

Enough to bring a slight covering on cars, grass and some surfaces

Reminds me of the end of this classic vid of a Subaru Imprezza going up Mont St. Anne in Quebec. 

EDIT, seen yer latest photaes and those look suspiciously like winters oan the VW. Double kudos if so. Anyone going to Dalwhinnie in a blizzard should have winter rubber oan.

Yes it’s a can of Stella. I don’t have a ruler but I know a Stella is 5.87 inches tall so used it for my measurement.

Yes the golf R is the wife’s car so 4wd and we always run winters on all cars Nov- April as we do a lot of winter adventures on North York Moors, Yorkshire Dales etc plus annual Scotland trip.

Models seem to be getting more certain for a nasty storm hitting us on Sunday, no doubt named and warnings out for.

Slug was actually the best option. AWPR was nightmarish according to colleagues on their way south from a meeting at Thainstone. Just drove sensibly and made it home in around 45 minutes, would probably have taken twice as long going the other way.

  

Think we had around 3 inches this afternoon without actually measuring it. Quite a difference from the 1st photo taken at 2.55 to the 2nd taken at 4.35 as I was leaving.

Stv news had Sean Batty saying that he expects, 30,40 or even 50cms in the Ullapool, Loch Broom area in the next three days. Don't know if we have anyone in that area but it is pretty close to Skye. Will certainly beat my 1cm.

Further ahead some signs of high pressure eventually heading to the NE by early Feb with possible Easterlies on the cards.

Aye bet that wind and rain won't miss

It's already an ice rink outside, at least that weather warning was correct! Some cool patterns on the car already, going to be a fun early defrost tomorrow.

When you travelling? Worst bit today seems to have been South of Aberdeen as that's where most of the snow ended up falling. Mains roads are probaby fine when it's not actively snowing, I got from Alford to Westhill and back today no problem, just slower than normal, wife did the same to Keith and back. Off the main roads it's very variable, some are still quite snowy. 

Fubar news on Facebook is good for conditions on the NE roads. I checked and there's no mention of problems towards Banff, but some snowy pictures of the A96 near Huntly. It can all change rather quickly though, for the better or for the worse.
