Scottish weather discussion - Spring 2023/24

Again thanks to everyone for posting those stunning snow pictures...that has been one hell of a snow event up north for you folks and for once its lasted more than a few days.

Down here in the snowless central-belt the overnight minimum was -4.7 deg/C, still decently chilly and icy but dry.

The current temperature is -1.1 deg/C so still cold and dry.

 

The weather can go do one over the weekend...back to mild damp & windy pish...I'll bet the rain has no problem lashing us over the coming days...bloody typical.

Well the games a bogey for this cold spell , hopefully see the snow before winters end but not holding my breath.

Wouldn't be surprised if we see further cold and snow during February and March this year.

Hope so, we have hotel vouchers to use,  one each Inverness, Aviemore and Aberdeen so be checking forecast and hope time them for some wintry weather.

Busy day digging out, managed to get one car dug out, not that we can really go anywhere anyway! Some gusty winds this afternoon caused some drifting before quieter with hard frost now  currently -3.4C fourth ice day in succession. Expecting more snow tonight before beginnings of a slow thaw tomorrow but I suspect with black ice becoming the big problem which is much worse than the snow around here for driving. (or walking!)

Well I’m a bit lost tonight as I’ve given the weather station to the chap that runs the Apiary cafe in Dalwhinnie. He’s going to put it in his garden permanently and Lee from Highland Weather is going to send me the money for it. Lee didn’t realise how good a frost hollow Dalwhinnie is as the Met Site is well up from valley low point.

Lovely but cold day today after another 4 or 5 inches of powder overnight. 

The wind got up for a bit in the afternoon with snow blowing around in the usual places but decided to go for a XC ski to make the most of the sunshine. Conditions were great in the shelter of the woods but almost unskiable on the areas that had caught the full amount of unconsolidated powder. Need fatter skis - will definitely sleep tonight. 

 

The coming thaw should actually improve the skiing greatly, for a while at least!

Oh for goodness sake. Was about to post my end of cold snap conclusion and we have a wee mini streamer just hit.  Temps -2c/-3dp and light snow falling.  

Hope I don't get banned for saying looking forward to snow melting and a change of weather types for a bit

Not had much snow here but I’m looking forward to a wee bit warmer. Had my mouth shaped for Sweet and sour chicken balls from our Chinese the other day but after two nights of -9/-10 their pipes are frozen. This is unacceptable. We did get another dusting today at home which checks out as the met said rain.

A few tins of Stella will help you get over your loss

-8 again on the car leaving this morning and -1 now. Caught a little shower here earlier but everything else fizzled out long before it reached here. 
 

Looks like it has been an epic spell for those further north but nothing more than a dusting for me. 

Nice cold spell even if snow was lacking here. All eyes now on some pretty foul weather heading in for the weekend.

Steady moderate snow here for last half hour or so, temps gradually on the rise from -4 earlier to -1.2C now

Snowing again here with a breeze getting up. If we get some drifting overnight then the drifts will probably resist the thaw for a number of days especially  as my local forecast on here gives the possibility  of at least a ground frost most nights next week when sky clears  Remember ground is very chilled.  Ground  frost  will happen under clear sky  in shelter out of mild wind very easily.   Maybe not quite so mild as further south.  If some of the drifts hang on for a week or so then maybe the ancients  sayings may come true ."Its waiting for more"

Seen this loads of times after  cold spells  in the past going back decades. Forecast very mild  but clearing skies prevent it from  getting  too mild and then 5he next cold spell shows up.

We also have the heaviest snow of this cold spell falling just now.

Currently -3.1c with clear skies.  Aurora alert earlier but nought seen.

Over to Sauchen in the afternoon for a walk round there, good dump of snow there as well - caught in a shower but that came and went quickly.

Got to love the pink topped snow shower clouds around sunset.

A good few days of snow, anymore though and it would have gotten too disruptive.

Skived off for a walk near Leadhills this afternoon under brilliant blue skies. In contrast to the scenes of deep snow up north, the small amounts of snow  are mostly confined to north-facing slopes, so the following photos might appeal more to frost enthusiasts (if there is such a thing) rather than snow lovers. A good crisp wintry feel though, and since a bit of wind was getting up it was a bit bracing to say the least on the higher areas, and I had to get the gloves back on rather quickly after some photos! 

Some of the more sluggish burns etc. were partially frozen, but it hasn’t been cold enough to freeze faster-flowing watercourses.

Incidentally, it got down to either -8.2 or -8.8 here in Motherwell last night, depending on which local weather station you believe! The cold air can get quite well established in the Clyde valley after a few days of low temperatures. Pretty sure it was the coldest night here since it nudged just below -10 in December 2022.

Wind just got up and there's a lots of very fine snow swirling around in the air. Can't tell if that blob that @Scottish-Irish Skiermentioned earlier has finally crept over us, or it's bieing blown off the house roof and surrounding fields. Probably a combination of both.
