Eagle Eye Durham City.  At 9.am it was cold, and sky layered with a very low stratocumulus - probably a fret off the sea - with sun breaking through.  Once the sky cleared, there was a very small level of convection for a period of time. But now it's a mix of sun and haze with general low level badly defined messy stratocumulus. There's very little sign of convection activity, so it would have to be imported rather than home grown.

It might change.

Wade We had our turn last September. With that mothership churning out circa 600 strikes/min!

I don't think I witnessed that, I might've been unlucky and got a gap. I know if I did get it, I would remember it. I remember having a huge night time storm in 2015.

Durham City. It looks like my 'local high pressure' storm-killing ability has affected Durham. No change here from this morning, apart from some visible low level convection (think: pathetic level) out of the disorganised stratocumulus. There's a lot of haze, too. And a police helicopter (all the excitement is here).  However, radar shows we might get imports from the coast later on.

The borders are doing well!

TJS1998Tom We had light rain this morning which has downgraded to light drizzle this afternoon as well. Looking at the radar we are just underneath the rear edge of a frontal system which initially came in this morning from France but is now moving over Brussels/the Netherlands. Seems to have sucked all the energy out of the air but hopefully as it moves off tonight the air will clear ready to generate more energy for the next event.🤞

View live satellite images of Hoyland Nether on the cloud radar at SAT24 and see where the sun is shining or the rain is falling.

Allseasons-Si it’ll likely die out but I’d love to eat my own words

Lots of strikes now coming from that cell in the North sea, anybody who lives in the middle of Mablethorpe and Grimsby may have a shout (providing it doesn't die out) as it appears it is making a v line straight towards that area.

Eagle Eye Congrats Eagle 👏. when it comes to storms it's a total game changer. There is nothing worse than knowing that storms are within reach but you're stuck where you are, and with your meteorological knowledge, you'll be able to put yourself in some great spots.

If only it was Winter, imagine the snow potential this would've been coming from the East

Convective Outlook⚡️

During the early hours of Saturday, a few intense showers may develop across NE/N Eng, Scotland which may bring a few isolated lightning strikes. A bit uncertainty how much lightning activity will be within these showers, however we suspect there could be lightning strikes at times as cape levels seem likely to sit around 200-400J/KG.

During the late morning / early afternoon, we should see 2 areas of interest from across parts of Scotland & SE/S England where sporadic lightning may occu

Showers will develop across S/SE England before tracking N/NW where further showers may develop which may bring the odd couple of isolated lightning strikes. An area of interest has been put out as most models are suggesting Cape around 300-600J/KG alongside with intense shower development. A thunderstorm or few may develop for a time within this area during the afternoon period.

Our attention will also focus across parts of Scotland, where Cape is also expected to be around 200-400J/KG with some models suggesting higher, however i think its safe to say this is an outlier. Heavy intense showers are expected to develop and become slowly moving across the AOI. A few lightning strikes may be embedded within these showers, possibly the odd thunderstorm.

 Jamie M

awesome! Was this to the north of the storms looking towards the south?

I only ask as I think usually on a typical storm moving east the southern edge is often the most active? Or I might be wrong…

this would potentially mean where you were considering the storm was moving in from the east you would have a view of the most intensive point of electrical activity… I think… only say this cos you had a great view into the clouds from your location.

All I saw was sheet lightning haha
