Unfortunately, the lava has now cut off the access road to the Blue Lagoon, guests had half an hour to get dressed and on a bus out. It has also cut Keflaviks hot water supply pipes!!

Which raises the question why did they re-open it. They got away with it today. The funny thing about the barriers they stopped at the road. Clearly they though Lava wouldn't use the road.

Eruption already dying down a lot.

Iceland's Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management said a state of emergency was declared Thursday after consulting with emergency officials in the area. Officials said that the main pipeline that delivers hot water to the region was destroyed after lava flowed over it, causing a lack of hot water. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-68237327

It's currently forecast to be -7'c tonight and tomorrow on the Reykjanes with the only hot-water reserve tanks set to run-dry within 6 hours (if used sparingly), the main concern is that 20,000 of the population will be needing to keep their homes warm to stop pipes from freezing-over and the only feasible means of doing this is by them using the electricity grid at max capacity. Certainly going to be a juggling act over the next few hours/days as to how much indirect damage this eruption is going to cause.

Amazing how fast it was flowing. The eruption also probably indicates that previous lava fields weren't erupted in one go but with many small eruptions over time,

It is only a matter of time before a fissure opens inside the blue lagoon & grindavik.

A large scale eruption may happen a few years down the line too.

It was a beautiful colourful day today

This will now probably carry on for years as part of the cycle of the volcanic activity which appears to occur on the peninsula.

I do wonder at what point the authorities have to say OK, enough, Reykjanes Peninsula we have to leave to nature for now.

I know there are huge costs involved but it's also costing to try and divert or prevent lava reaching certain areas, all of which may be for nothing in the long run.

Some volcanoes elsewhere on the island may be conducive to building defenses, those on long cycle eruptions and once erupted have a fairly long quiet period, but Reykjanes is an area totally broken with fractures and faults across a large area, plus the history of a fairly regular pattern of roughly 800 yrs quiet and then 100-200 of activity.

I think now is the time they need to think on abandoning the area, with infrastructure slowly being destroyed, a town which sits on hugely unstable ground, and the power plant unfortunately a little too close to the main activity.

Watched the eruption end today however it didn't half do an impressive flow rate of 600 m3/s overall. This time the Svartsengi shows a drop in height of 10cm. This didn't happen on the last eruption. So unless the flow into the chamber has ceased we'd probably waiting a couple of months for the next eruption.

The only reason why the barriers worked was because the eruptions were brief and short. A more prolonged eruption would easily overwhelm them as demonstrated in earlier eruptions.

toggerob not good, i hope something is sortted out somehow. Unfortunately sounds like a mass relocation issue, but that will mean a huge building plan somewhere, and will take some time.

The area is clearly awakening so there are likely to be more disasters in the coming years unfortunately.  We need to be real about this, some of the towns are gonna disappear and have to be relocated as most have been built on ancient craters or lava fields.

The area is waking up so now is the time to take action, I cannot stress that enough

levels nearly back to where they were before last eruption so a new soon or will there need to be more uplift and pressure before the next eruption. Strange update to risk map no red zone any more.

There is no eruption,...i would be the first person(unless at work) to notify you if one did happen, next possible eruption date is around the end of the month into next unless something changes drastically

i do have notifications from quite a few sources if and when one does happen🙂

There was a lot of earthquakes earlier today, was thinking it might kick off overnight but it has significantly quietened down but could easily pick up before dawn and another eruption as the sun comes up again.

Isn't there usually a lull in activity just before an eruption.  I personally think it will be this week or weekend, even though I thought maybe March 1-8.

I think it looks likely it will be sooner.  As said could even be tonight.

It's not a question of 'if' but 'when' as that the 8mcm threshold has been passed, there was a few small 6-4km depth earthquakes this morning close to Grindavik which is indicative that the formed Graben is now reacting to the additional strain being put upon it from the Svartsengi dyke. I'd be surprised if all is still quiet on this part of the Reykjanes by Friday.
