Additional to the above post, what happens to the polar vortex if the Amoc collapses? Does it expand south to lower levels in the hemisphere or stay roughly where it is? Or is it governed by other influences.

My really overly simple thoughts are that if the Atlantic slows down, we'll get progressively drier as well as colder, but you'd think there'd be a massive shake-up of how the atmosphere turns over in both hemispheres.

Hairy Celt I'd agree colder and drier in winter, shorter summers but potentially frequent hot plumes and thundery breakdowns, very short springs and autumn's, whenever the tipping point and collapse of Amoc is due to  happens who knows, my guess within the next 50 years. That energy from a quieter Atlantic has to go somewhere will it be a stormier mid southern hemisphere.

There is some evidence that during the Loch Lomond re-advance period when glaciers reformed and advanced in parts of the Highlands, that summers were warmer and drier. Reduced rainfall, and a bigger proportion of precipitation falling as snow tipped the balance in favour of accumulating snowpack. Arguably could describe it as a more continental style climate.

Interesting that they suggest sea ice might extend down to 50 degrees N.

I suspect the reality won't be nearly as dramatic but polar bears would maybe give the seagulls at Aberdeen beach some healthy ice cream stealing competition!

We've got thundersnow... Wtf

Saw the radar, opened the blind just in case... Started as hail then bam, lightning with a loud rumble with heavy snow. Probably more of a dusting than we got from the front last week...

Was out a walk and got caught in it. Thought I saw distant lightning. A real squall with hail, rain, sleet and snow. Completely soaked!

Two big bright flashes past 20 minutes, one direction of East Kilbride the other Hamilton.  Nice deposit of hail too.

Proper wintry radar on the go, thought I'd heard a Rumble there and a bit of hail mixed in.

This cam about to be plastered
