Looks like we are going to have to wait yet another year to break the long streak since the last negative mean CET Feb.

Will we ever see another negative CET Feb again the way this particular month is warming up

Wet, dull and warm for much of England and Wales:

What has happened to February! Used to be the month most likely to bring a cold high pressure spell, December nowadays more likely to do so.. This Feb a complete shocker, all those long range forecasts showing heights to NW, and low heights to SE, how wrong.

Another very mild, very wet and dull winter.

Feb 24 a complete non entity month in all ways, what a tedious month.

reef The cold 1961-90 average February CET of 3.8 contained two sub zero CETs, and four additional sub 2*C CETs.  The 1971-2000 average was 4.2*C, which was down to containing only one sub zero CET and three additional sub 2*C CETs.  The 1981-2010 average was 4.4, which had one sub zero CET and two additional sub 2 CETs.  The 1991-2020 February average CET is 4.9, which had no sub zero CETs and down to only one sub 2 CET.  Now February 1991 has dropped out of the 30 year rolling average, it is now in the 5s.  It just goes to show that to achieve a 30 year average CET for any winter month under 4*C, you probably need it to contain five or six sub 2 CETs, and at least one sub zero CET.

When a winter month is down to having no sub 2*C CETs within a 30 year period let alone sub zero CETs, it then becomes difficult to achieve a 30 year average even under 5*C.  February has basically never been a notably cold month since 1991, and come to think of it, January has only been a notably cold month on one occasion (2010), since 1987.

The 1779 record still lives on.. I wonder how long that will last for given the unprecedented amount of warmth February has seen recently. It's clearly our fastest warming month of the year, close to July. The average CET for February since 2019 is a staggering 6.7C.. surely it has to break at some point.

Feb 2024 would be considered a warm March, the 15th warmest March in fact. Still, it doesn't even come close to December 2015 figures which blew the previous record out of the water.

Did we experience any airflow that wasn't between NW and south all month, this factor combined with the exceptional warm SSTs makes it no surprise it was so mild.

First of all, congratulations to February 1779 on maintaining its record status! It was a bit of a rollercoaster.

We have had quite a few cases of a mild February in recent years, so it will be interesting to see whether this record can endure for much longer. Can it make it to the 250th anniversary, I wonder?

WYorksWeather I think what it more surprising is the fact a month 250 years ago has not been bettered since! I often wonder how warmth on such a scale could be produced then at a time when global temps were far colder than now.. probably a sustained SW/ S flow would do the trick I guess, months with synoptics akin to Dec 2015.

damianslaw I think it's important to realise how much many attempts can make a difference. All else equal, we should assume that February 1779 was at least around a 1 in 300 year event. Possibly even less likely than that, given it is one of the CET records that has survived, so survivorship bias might even lead us to make an adjustment and say it was on the order of once a millennium or something.

If we applied that to today, you're probably looking at something utterly crazy. Maybe if the conditions from the 15th-18th had persisted for the majority of the month (as you say, a mild SW, probably more towards SSW to get that direct draw from the Azores). Say 20 days with an average CET of 11C, and the other 8/9 containing the inevitable spell that is at least somewhat cooler even if not cold, say with a 6C mean CET, with perhaps one or two frosty nights in there. Final outcome for a 29-day month would be 9.4C.

Probably an interesting discussion about what sort of CET extremes are possible these days if we stack the deck - December 2015 certainly shows the possibilities. We've seen some record breaks of late but they've been relatively marginal. I don't think it'll be too long, though, before we see another month just get absolutely destroyed.

Another factor that needs to be considered, as I understand it from various links in current discussion, in 1779 CET values are from a single location near London, albeit a London with very little heat island. Now it depends on specific synoptics but quite often London averages nowadays are 1-2 C above CET, not all of it due to urban effect. There would be cold months  with s.e. wind flow turning out colder in 18th century London than 18th century central England too, 1779 would not likely be one.

Also, CET in this period drops 0.2 for urban effects, so before that adjustment, 2024 was 8.0 not 7.8. If this was a month where the urban effect was not as great as average (clear skies and cold air masses have largest urban heat island effects, 2024 had little of that sort of weather) then it is another reason to say 1779 and 2024 are probably virtually tied.

Now it could be that I missed some details about adjustments of London values to overlap with later grids of stations located further n and w.

To the point in the previous post, a 31-day interval ending 20 and also 21 Feb averaged 8.3 so that is probably a real indicator of a potential February average of around 8.5 (both shorter and later being factors). It will not surprise this observer if we see an 8.5 February sooner or later. I also think march could go to 9.5 or even 10.0, 1957 was not piling on heat near the end and fell back from around 9.5.

Just as a guess, I would expect CET record values by 2050 to be around

8.0 _ 8.5 _ 10.0 _ 12.5 _ 15.1 _ 18.5 _ 20.2 _ 20.0 _ 17.5 _ 14.5 _ 11.0 _ 9.6 ___ 11.8 annual

you can see I believe 1833 and 2015 will hold on and the other ten will be broken.

I would expect a 14.2 to 14.5 may and a 9.0 Dec in the next 25 years, not records but new second place values.

If there is a net-weather in 2050 they can have a laugh at old RJS at that point. (I would be 101 and not likely caring).

EWP tracker ends its soggy journey at 150.3 mm, provisionally fourth wettest February behind only 2020, 1833, and 1923.

Will make no changes to preliminary scoring posted a few days ago, until final value is posted on 5th.

2nd CET and 4th EWP would be the most extreme combined ranking for any month at the warm end, but August 1912 was wettest and coldest.

Winter 2023-2024 on this provisional value has a total now of 409.0 mm, ranking 6th behind only 2013-2014, 1914-1915, 1989-1990, 1876-1877, and 1994-1995. Rest of top ten below 2023-2024 now are 1993-1994, 2020-2021, 1868-1869, and 2015-2016. This winter almost doubled last winter (216.3 mm) and was well ahead of 2021-2022 (245.7 mm). 2019-2020 ranks 13th (now) with 1915-1916 and 1959-1960 in 12th and 11th. So we have seen five of top thirteen wet winters in past eleven.

Roger J Smith To be fair I'd call that 11 out of 12, since December 2015 is a 'modern' record.

May is an interesting one to be fair - there are surprisingly few recent date records, no new high temperature record, and no CET record. Either there is a good physical reason for why it is warming much more slowly, or it is just dumb luck.

Combined scoring report CET and EWP (winter 2023-2024)

For a few forecasters only entering CET, "combined" rank is CET rank only and appears in a second column.

The number beside forecaster name indicates number of contests entered. This only appears if they entered 1 or 2.

Ranking in table is based on average of CET and EWP contest ranks (fourth col). Note only points totals are compared,

and CET points can be a lot higher than EWP points for 1/3 entrants (as part of points total based on averages).
