  1. But contrary to some opinions it has not been a warm autumn. September was the coldest for quite a while and October was only a touch above thanks to the last 2 days. A very mild spell is part of an average Autumn. It has just turned out to be an exceptionally mild one.

  2. Best months of the year now for daylight hours (November to January). Enjoy it while it lasts.

To be honest ive been oblivious to whats being going on outside while its been dark. For weather enthusiasts, the opportunity for actually observing and enjoying 'the weather' is sadly rather limited at this time of year. On a cold damp day in January the time to shut the curtains is welcomed by me but on a sparkling day like today the darkness came much too soon.

  3. Both December 2006 and January 2007 were sunnier and wetter and much milder than average, so they had a good blend of everything, except for cold obviously. January 2007 is actually the third mildest January on record, in fact.

I'd love a repeat of March 2012 too. It wasn't just the warmth of that month, but it was also rediculously sunny and it even felt like summer in the last week. Hopefully we'll see a repeat of all of those months this winter, and the models will co-operate with us. :)

I recall the anticyclonic period just before Christmas 2006 very well. Travelling along on the train on a very cold and misty evening with the daylight fading. I love such anticyclonic spells in winter as long as its not totally foggy all day.

  4. We should leave the whole year to GMT as far as Im concerned! Thank God mankind cannot alter the light and dark which mother nature provides through the seasons in this part of the Planet!  Just imagine ,if mankind could meddle with the seasonal light on a daily basis, we would have a week of non stop daylight and the following week would be complete darkness

Noo! id be leaving the club on a summers early morning to sunlight in my eyes. All that wasted daylight! I take back what i said about Spain in my earlier post if Barcelona is anything to go by. Sunsets times for midsummer pretty much the same as the UK with sunrise much later around 6.30am.

  5. Agreed. There is too little light in winter to have a perfect scenario. Most places in the UK get less than 8 hours of daylight in mid-December, there is simply no one size fits all solution regarding the clocks. It's either have long, dark mornings or long, dark evenings.

I imagine if we scrapped GMT and kept BST all year round then i would eventually despite the dark mornings. Even if i moved to Spain to get longer daylight hours in winter i wouldnt get the 10pm sunsets that i love about our Summers. So i cant win to be honest. Time to acclimatise for the next 3 months and make use of the daylight when we do get it.

  6. God isnt it depressing getting so dark early now.

I hate the change over to darker eves.

Why the hell cant we follow the Europeans, even in the depth of winter its 5 ish before it gets dark.

Thank god for the local gym on weekdays to pass away these long boring evenings. As for Sundays when the gym is shut, its surely not right to sit infront of the telly for 6 hours. How unhealthy is that.

  7. Grand morning here so I went for my usual stroll around the country park. good to see the early dafs are poking up their heads and sniffing the coffee. The only downside I was nearly trampled underfoot by a bunch of about twenty joggers of various ages clutching water bottles and the odd oxygen cylinder. Fortunately tranquility was soon restored.

Its been a grand Autumn for me. Not usually a fan of the season but its been near perfection so far. So many calm and pleasant days for getting out and about. The only blot on the picture has been that awful dull easterly spell a week ago. Looking ahead the models are looking good as far as im concerned.

  8. A beautiful pleasant day here. :) lots Of sunshine.

Well i must say ive quite enjoyed this Autumn so far. Loads of dry days to get out and about and delay that inevitable onset of wet and windy conditions that turn everywhere boggy and waterlogged in the winter. But the time is approaching when the amount of daylight is becoming an issue so getting out and about becomes more problematic. Therefore come November ill be welcoming those big Atlantic storms.

  9. Dreadful wet, cool and overcast spell of late 'summer' weather recently and more rubbish on the way, if the charts are to believed. High pressure again stuck out to our west giving a week of cold cloudy northerlies and more rain in the East with some pretty strong winds here at times. Seriously, could that high sit just to our East for a week instead? Or is that impossible these days lol? Makes me laugh how the worst possible synoptics for the UK appear so easily and so often. Enough already!

And when the high did eventually set up position to the east of the UK during August it was too far east to deliver any heat. I seriously think we have been unluckly the way things have panned out this summer. Time to wipe the slate clean and come back next year.
