  1. Been torrential rain in Glasgow for the last two and a bit hours solid. Can safely say we don't need any more rain here. And I am not exaggerating when I say torrential.
  2. I've given up hoping for any more snow here now. Haven't been upto Clarkston or Newton Mearns today but I reckon it will still be snowing up there, especially if that Neilston webcam is anything to go by. Also serves to further my belief that cold, dry and crisp weather is better than any promise of snow in Glasgow. It's just too unreliable.
  3. 43m above sea level here. There's some snow in the ground but nothing compared to just up the road in Clarkston I'd imagine.
  4. Yesterday's snow began to lie (whilst I was away) but turned to rain during the evening. That rain was particularly heavy, heavier than the snow was, so outside is just a slushy mess. No sign of snow or even sleet since yesterday, only rain. This snow event is turning out more typical of Glasgow I think.
  5. Snow still not lying in Cathcart area of Glasgow, however having just been out for a run, Giffnock and Clarkston have a couple of inches lying. Big difference in the thickness of falling snow too. Imagine it snowed for 36 hours here and none of it settled? If it could happen anywhere, it would be Glasgow.
  6. I'm in Cathcart. There's a slight settling on the grass but even then not much. Just seems to making everywhere wet.
  7. It is currently -9 in Glasgow. But www.weather.co.uk believe that when I step outside, it will feel like -13. Bah! We can handle that now.
  8. Seems to be on here that to get almost instant snow, just post a complaint about the lack of it. That's twice today I think.
  9. Norway interests me as there is a massive temperature difference between Scotland, where I stay, and there. However the distance is not relatively large. I noticed that in January when Glasgow had temps of around -5 to -10C approx, Oslo was still around 10 degrees colder, and even places like Bergen and Stavanger, on the coast, were also colder although by not as much. Just shows the affect of the gulf stream on Scotland, as even places like Denmark and southern Sweden, on a similar latitude, are still a bit cooler during the winter, although see similar temps in the summer.
  10. Saw online there that the temp in Glasgow is now -3. Didn't feel that cold when I was out there (did have a big jacket mind). December/January have definitely toughened us up. This doesn't really feel like a cold spell. I want -5 by day dammit!
  11. To put things in perspective, this winter I saw the Clyde in Glasgow city centre freezing over for the first time I can remember. Historic? Not sure, but certainly significant. We had sub -10C temps in 2000 and 1995, so this was actually a little over due if you use that as a predictor. However the length of time it lasted was what really made it. Now, if we get a week or so of sub-zero daytime temperatures again, then we might be at historic levels. Would be like we had two winters here! I'd rather that it wasn't historic though. I'd like every winter to be like that here...
  12. Cheers LS. As Catch said in a post earlier, a few crumbs through the central belt to the west, coupled with some nice crisp weather, would do nicely. I'm up for work at 4am on Wednesday for a 6am start. I wonder what it'll be like then... But still nothing compared to the wonderful spell just past though.
  13. Right, can I ask a wee question here. See when we see it predicted a lot that a cold spell is coming up next week. Is it actually going to be cold for us in Scotland, or just cold relative to what usually happens in England? Looking at BBC and weatheronline forecasts for Glasgow, I don't see anything especially cold with regard to temperatures here. Dropping below freezing (edit: at night) does not to me constitute anything worth talking about on its own. That's what winter should be! Or, are people predicting a genuine cold spell with ice days and snow potential included, which the weather sites either haven't picked up on, or just aren't predicting to make it through to the west?
  14. Its about +7C in Glasgow tonight. Amazing to think that this time last week I was out in temperatures of about -12, and that during the day it had been -7. I wish we had that more often, at least once every winter maybe. It's winter and it should be winter weather! None of this mild mucky nonsense!
  15. In fairness, how keen would you be to come out during your Xmas holidays without overtime pay? Council staff have as much right to holidays as everyone else. It's not them who decide how budgets are spent.
  16. Anyone else dipping in and out of the model discussion thread to get an idea of what's next.... only to be more uncertain than before they went in?! Anyway, some folk are saying there might be a renewed easterly. If so good stuff, even if Glasgow doesn't get much of the snow, at least it will be nice and cold again. I've went through a shift in expectations over the last few weeks now so that anything above freezing no longer constitutes cold any more. Speaking of cold, a return to some of this over here would be fun...
  17. Cold and crisp with periods of snow from whatever direction. Just as long as we hold onto cold air until late Feb/early March. Basically what has happened up here over the past few weeks is absolutely ideal for me. Love it!
  18. Taken a few snaps with my mobile phone during the past couple of days. Apologies for the quality. Hopefully give you an impression of the cold here over the past week. River Clyde in Central Glasgow, Friday 9th January 2010. There was actually a boat on the river - might just be visible in one of the pics - which was smashing up all the ice. Had I been a bit earlier I might have got a better snap of the ice on the river. Just up stream there was a flock of birds on top of the ice, but it looked too far to capture on my phone. River Cart, South Glasgow, Sat 10th Jan Pretty much frozen over, although the water was flowing underneath. Pretty impressive that the snow had settled on top. Not bad going for an inner city river I thought.
  19. Ah well, I suppose we were spoilt with those temps going on as long as they did. +4C in Glasgow and it looks as though the thaw is starting. I'll miss the snow but likewise I'll also be able to get out running if we have some melt.
  20. Sorry, that observation was actually at Prestwick Airport, not Glasgow.
  21. Started snowing in Glasgow at about 2am. Websites I checked just before then were still registering -9C. This mornings -4C is positively tropical.
  22. There's a bit of cloud cover drifting in just now over the south side of Glasgow. Might raise the temp a bit. I keep seeing most forecasts (ie BBC, weather.co.uk; weather online) showing us above freezing on Sunday. Not a fan of this at all.
