  1. Last night and this morning can safely by summed up as pure baltic.
  2. Thanks LS, I like this answer. I think experience of Glasgow means that sooner of later lots and lots of rain will come along and wash away any cold and/or snowy weather, so quite delighted with the idea that the cold air is going to hold on for a while longer. In saying this, I just walked about a mile and a quarter up the road from a relative's house and have to say that the cold was verging on rather unpleasant. I'm asthmatic and I'm now having to keep my mouth and nose covered with a scarf most of the time so I don't start wheezing. I'm usually a keen runner but during this spell with the snow and ice, and now these temperatures, getting out is an absolute no no. So unfortunately it does have a down side. Noticed on my way up the road a bit of cloud cover coming in from the east. Bit of snow coming our way maybe? Temp when I checked online was -11C.
  3. Had it frozen over completely? I forgot to check on my way in and out of central station today, but the other day there were chunks of ice floating down it. Are people of the view then that this is now the last few days of the cold weather coming up?
  4. I've noticed myself beginning to toughen up to these low temperatures as well. Anything near freezing I now shrug my shoulders at, even if during the day. When walking about I only feel cold when first outside, and then after about 5-10 minutes I find myself wanting to take my hat/gloves off, even though it's still below freezing and feeling lower. it was -7 about 6 o'clock or so so -5 now seems a bit disappointing! Was hoping for -10 tonight. Who knows we might get it! I stay close to a railway line too. Can tell if it's really cold by the level of flashing from the overhead wires when a train goes past. None yet, probably loads in the morning though.
  5. I've no idea if it will be viewed as historic - guess much depends on what happens later this month and next - however there are aspects of this to me make this winter exceptional. In particular, it's the length of cold spell. I think now for over two weeks the temperatures in Glasgow have been below 5C which in itself is nothing too out of the ordinary. However for much of this time, day and night, it has been at most freezing point or below. We've had two considerable falls of snow - one on Dec 22nd and another overnight on Monday 4th Jan, coupled with other minor falls, which has seen snow on the ground in residential areas for over a fortnight. Usual form for Glasgow is for any snow to last a week at the most and be washed away by rain, and even cold spells I can remember in 1995 (-20C) and Dec 2000 lasted around a week or so. Because of the period of time we've had sub zero temps for, on two occasions now, once just after Xmas and also this morning, I've seen ice on the River Clyde on Glasgow city centre. I have never once witnessed this in my 28 years on the planet, and to be honest is something I never ever expected to witness at all. If I get a chance I'll take a picture tomorrow, as I've no doubt it will still be there then! That to me is incredible.
  6. River Clyde in Glasgow city centre was freezing over when I crossed it this morning. Quite big patches of ice forming for a fair distance from the banks outwards. Couldn't get a picture as I was on a train into Central station.I'll plump for -11 for Glasgow tonight.
  7. Got to feel bad for you. Even Glasgow has a decent amount of snow! Nicely topped up by Tuesday's early morning fall. Actually (perversely) looking forward to the high coming as it means the temps should drop away nicely.
  8. Where is she going? No replacement buses between Aviemore and Inverness because the A9 is closed. Inverness to Aberdeen line closed as well. Just how bad is it up there?!
  9. Just performed another comedy fall there. I love the snow as much as anyone, but I think we need much more snow than ice... Or maybe I need better boots. Like the forecast for snow LS, however I'm always wary during this spell of any snow predicted for us lest it turn to rain. Nevertheless I look forward to it.
  10. Hey all Nice little fresh covering of snow in Glasgow today. Snow on and off for most of the day which has in most places in the suburbs covered over the ice, although where I am it hasn't really managed to disguise the ice so much, probably because of the height of the buildings and the amount of people walking around. Seems to be frosting over for the night now so don't expect much more in the way of snow, unless someone can tell me otherwise... Just on the issue of a thaw, I'm loving this spell of weather as much as the rest of you (aren't we such a bunch of big kids!) but I'm starting to spare a thought for those who are utterly hating it. Some old folk really aren't liking this amount of snow - and more importantly, ice - at all, especially when the councils just haven't done anything to clear pavements or anything. I'm now starting to worry about older members of my family when it comes to being out on the icy streets now. Worth bearing in mind I suppose but that's not so much the cold itself but councils' incompetence in keeping the streets clear. Another issue I have is with people who clear snow away thinking it makes things better. It doesn't, as when night falls the bit they've cleared away becomes much more slippy than the snowy bits. Anyway, apologies for the rant, it's now over.
  11. A couple of falls in Glasgow this morning. +2C now apparently. Sun keeps coming out and melting it though! Need a few more falls for it to be anything decent. Good to get a fresh covering though.
  12. Right, according to weather.co.uk it's now -5 in Glasgow. That seems quite early to be getting down to that level, anyone agree or does it not necessarily matter? Possible -10 tonight perhaps? If so, looks like tonight is going to be purebalticbyraway and I'll have to wrap up on my way to the party tonight. Feel sorry for anyone out in George Square or Princes Street because when it's that cold it's just not worth it. I may just stay at the party right through til the end of tomorrow to avoid having to go outside again.
  13. Snaw in the south side of Glasgow! Heavy stuff that's blowing around. I've got hope again!
  14. Been above freezing in Glasgow for about 24 hours I think and there was heavy rain today. I feel like officially declaring this cold snap over.
  15. Quite warm temps in Glasgow overnight too it seems. 3C according to weather.co.uk
  16. +1C in Glasgow. Could actually do with some snow in Glasgow. Would make the pavements more easy to negotiate!
  17. Cold crisp day in Glasgow with periods of passing cloud cover. A few snow flurries as well and I don't think it got above freezing thankfully. Out of interest does anyone else use weather.co.uk and how accurate do they find them. That site is also reporting the day or two mild for Glasgow (ie 2C max, then back down to below freezing max for hogmanay and new year.
  18. Yeah I thought there must be some sort of fault. If there were to be a record low temperature it surely wouldn't be out there! Wonder if the temp will drop much lower in Glasgow tonight. -10 a possibility? If not tonight, another night? At least it means the snow has stopped melting, although when you're walking home after a night out it's bloomin treacherous!
  19. Weather online says Benbecula currently has -29? Surely some mistake? Out at shops earlier - so cold I couldn't have any part of my skin exposed or it would get sore.
  20. Not looking good here at all. Will we get any more snow? Incessant rain now and I think we've had plenty overnight judging by the amount of snow we've lost. Just typical.
  21. Had some light snow in Glasgow there, looks as though it's turned back to sleet.
  22. It was raining earlier in Glasgow and there had definitely been a thaw. Think the temp has been up at +1 today. Doesn't feel as though this qualifies as being 'cold' any more!
  23. Currently -4 in Glasgow, was -8 at Lunchtime and I doubt it will get any less cold given that it'll be getting dark in half an hour. Still several inches of snow on the ground and it's not going anywhere (I hope). Talk of more snow tomorrow and Boxing day. Love it!
