  1. Is this precipitation out in the North Sea likely to come in land? Looking at the radar just now it seems a long way off.
  2. I appreciate (and share) many of your concerns about the upcoming cold spell, however asking how anyone can like this type of weather does, on the face of it, appear to be an attempt to guilt trip others.
  3. Love the complete lack of precipitation along the full length of the Clyde valley there….
  4. I have mixed feelings about this cold spell. It is nice to see some genuinely wintry temperatures and weather, and I’m looking forward to the crispness. On the other hand looking at the forecast temperatures it’s certainly no 2009 or 2010. Each day the temperature looks forecast to reach freezing or -1, which is well above daytime maxima back then. But with the cost of living stuff and energy prices, I do worry what prolonged cold weather may do to people, especially if someone is on prepay energy meters and can’t afford a new top up. This could get pretty desperate for some folk.
  5. I think the issue with the forecasted low is that many experienced posters don’t see any building blocks for such an intense low to even develop in the way that the models are suggesting.
  6. Was that the winter of the Tay-Clyde streamer, or was that the winter before?
  7. Some beautiful September weather today, absolutely cracking with clear skies, unbroken sun and a low autumnal light starting to make its appearance. Leaving the country on Monday morning and given the amount of closures that day I’m glad. You can have a day off but you’ll be lucky if you can do anything with it. This whole enforced mourning period is a joke. Don’t ever let it be said the royal family aren’t political when we’re stumping up for this nonsense alongside the existence of foodbanks.
  8. Very heavy rain tonight and low cloud cover made it seem like darkness was descending around 6:45, about an hour before sun set. This, plus this weeks gradually cooling maxima, giving us the first true taste of autumn here.
  9. Looks like a decent week coming up with slightly cooler temperatures which would be welcome. Maybe a wee touch of autumnal chill in the air at night. Loads and loads of insects around as well still. Anyone getting loads of fruit flies in their house? A we drop in temperatures might come in handy in killing them off.
  10. Looking at the radar and the angle at which the rain band is travelling I’d be a bit concerned about flooding in the Falkirk/Larbert areas later this afternoon. I’d probably add the Kelvin Valley to that as well. South side of Glasgow looks like getting some soaking for the next few hours as well, but less severe.
  11. I wonder at times why I got drawn to this idea of ‘dog days of summer’ to describe this time of year. I think it might be in how the end of August & start of September compare to the early to mid spring period, which in daylight terms are its equivalent. Today was the equivalent to 4/5th April at least for sunset times, and was a gorgeous day with lovely warm sunshine. Yet in early April the weather here tends to be pretty cold muck, usually with cold showers of rain and sometimes even the last remnants of winter. The longer evenings actually are quite discombobulating, yet so are Septembers shorter evenings (in comparison to summer) accompanied by warmer weather that lasts into the evening. This is the one time of year where you might see someone wearing a t shirt outdoors when it is dark in Scotland. Both are quite unique times of year in terms of the weather/temperature/daylight combination which I’m not sure is so stark further south (and is likely more stark further north into the Nordics). It’s odd in a way, in that the longer nights of spring should herald a hopeful time looking forward to long summer days and nights, but is met with frustration at the lingering cold; meanwhile the dog days should be about a melancholy end to the fun and games of summer time, yet also provides a certain inner warmth and feeling of relaxation. Maybe it’s affects of the vitamin D exposure perking up our moods. The evening also provided an atmospheric dimming of the sunlight followed by a beautiful sunset, which I doubt early spring would provide us. Looks like we will have to take our shot of rainfall for the next week or so, but it’s a small price for a few days of continuing heat and sunshine, even if it feels like summer’s party is drawing to a close.
  12. Up here it’s more typical to have decent weather in early September with a marked change around a week or so in. This weeks forecast suggests that trend will continue this autumn. Temps don’t necessarily tumble but to be fair this year is the outlier in having consistently warm temperatures during the summer. Still very much feels like the dog days of summer that are just drawing to a close. Just as winter can cling on until late March, Summer can also linger through until mid month here. Nature doesn’t necessarily obey the calendar. Just as March and April can be very cold up here (sometimes the coldest part of the year) there’s no reason for the heat and humidity not to persist for a while, although less likely to do so for as long.
  13. I drove down the M74 this morning and that actually seemed to be the case…
  14. I think summer here was excellent. Some exceptional warm spells interspersed by some wet interludes. Although still incredibly dry by our usual standards we also had a night of storms and some heavy downpours. Can’t really ask for much more, maybe for some of the dry hot spells to have lasted longer, don’t think we had an unbroken two week spell, but that’s a minor thing. Oddly enough in June we were sick of the rainfall here, by mid July we were grateful for it after some of the heat we experienced.
  15. Some lovely sunshine in Glasgow today, not that warm but pleasant enough, decent breeze. Longer shadows evident now and the sun no longer getting into some of the tenement lined streets. Definitely feels like the dog days have begun now, it’ll definitely be noticeable when the sun sets around 8:40 this evening. Enjoying the remaining summery days but also waiting for the transition into autumn now.
  16. Low cloud cover last night meant it seemed dark from before actual sunset around 9pm. That combined with the lower temps and forecasted rain for the next week or so makes it feel like the descent into autumn has started this week.
  17. I got pelters last night from the other half for commenting that ‘normal service had resumed’ during the deluge last night. But it does kind of feel that way given the forecast for the next week. The river next to us has definitely been topped up a bit as the run off comes through from the Eaglesham moor. Yesterday’s rain actually felt quite refreshing when I went out for a run during the afternoon as well.
