  1. A good old Glasgow downpour today. Those COP26 delegates and visitors don’t know what they’re letting themselves in for….
  2. I've seen it mentioned that it was the cold spring that done it. Everything a wee bit later with the old leaves and foliage this year.
  3. Not sure I buy the global stilling chat at all. It was less then a decade since some very significant storms came through here, I don’t think we can say we’ve witnessed a discernible change in climate within that time. What troubles me about a lot of climate change discourse is how inconsistent it can be. From arguments whether or not specific weather events can be attributed to it, through to the articles in the 2000s about whether our children or grandchildren would see snow again, it’s difficult to take some of this seriously.
  4. You’re forgetting though that in Glasgow from Mid December to Mid January sunrise is after 8:30am, around New Year it is around 8:50am, it is *pitch* dark until about 8am at that time of year. Any changes to move onto permanent BST would mean it was dark until well after 9am and in mid winter it’d be still getting dark before 5pm - sunset in Glasgow in December and early Jan is before 4pm. Nothing really gained and early daylight is removed which would be just as bad for SAD etc. And of course, for Inverness, Kirkwall etc it would be even worse. Sorry, the dark days may be tough going, just as they can be for all of us, but I think scrapping wintertime would be a dreadful idea. EDIT:Apologies, I see you’re saying to limit wintertime rather than remove it. Still not sure of the benefits here as by putting clocks back when we do we regain an hour of light between 7-8am in Glasgow, any later/earlier and we would increase the amount of time it was dark post 8am. Not a fan, the current set up is as good as we are likely to get it I think.
  5. Exactly! And I aim that at many folk up here as well as elsewhere who complain about weather. Here in Glasgow it rains a lot, one of the rainiest major cities in Europe. We should be used to it and accommodating with it. Up in Fort William, the wettest town in the UK (and the town of the limp, being at the end of the West Highland Way), they have a bakery called rain. That’s the spirit. I think in the west of Scotland we should start a waterproof clothing range called ‘stoatin it doon’.
  6. Rain must’ve been quite heavy as it’s made some difference to the level of the White Cart Water. Not seen it close to as deep as this all summer.
  7. In Glasgow and Central Scotland last winter was probably better than 2008/09 for snow, we got it pretty frequently here, although not as good for bouts of significant cold. It was in its own league I guess. Interesting that these early blocking signals are suggesting something more akin to 2010 although like last winter, I doubt this one will follow the pattern of any previous. For here at least Dec 2009 started pretty mild and dry (IIRC) and only later in the month did more severe cold come in around Xmas and New Year. It was November into December 2010 that more severe cold returned. We had -18c at the airport mid morning one day in the middle of December that year.
  8. I’ve noticed that as well with the light. Lowering sun combined with contrasting thick cloud, something which is associated in our minds with colder times of the year.
  9. Unusual (?) thing in Glasgow these days where we seem to regularly get far less rain than is anticipated. Was this always a thing? Rain didn’t start until late this afternoon here and has just been a drizzle.
  10. I remember this quite well as this was when the independence referendum happened here. There were loads of events going on in Glasgow, and it was notable how warm and sunny it was for much of the time, right though until the day of the vote (which IIRC) was cloudy here. I’m sure even the week afterwards was also pretty pleasant as well. This year, in Glasgow at least, it feels quite similar.
  11. Mixed feelings about this autumnal turn. Quite enjoy the lengthening shadows brought by benign weather at this time of year but I was also yearning for something that confirmed the seasons were changing. At least Monday looks nice here - could be the last decent day we see here - and it’s an Edinburgh public holiday so I’m off work!
  12. The Hawk is Howling by Mogwai is another early autumn album. Was released in late August 2008 IIRC.
  13. Interesting how varied the weather was based on location. Skye was at no stage hot this week - certainly not cold - and whilst it did feel humid at times not uncomfortably so. Temps I think were in the high teens at their warmest. Interesting reading back the storm forecasts, we had thunder and lightning at Glenbrittle in the south of Skye on Thursday morning, yet seemingly Broadford had nothing. Also @mistyqueen that’s a cracking island you got there. I’d been before but had only gone as far as Broadford. Will definitely be back, although (at the risk of being hypocritical) I do hope visitor numbers and development don’t get out of control. I wonder if Skye and Lochalsh becoming a national park might help?
  14. Currently on Skye too. Very Dreich and murky and certainly not cold. Actually quite moody and dramatic looking around Uig today. Glasgow getting a heatwave but no sign of sun here….
  15. We’ve had a pretty decent summer in the west of Scotland. Above average sunshine, above average warmth, below average rainfall. Can’t ask for any more! The moans of the model thread about lack of good weather don’t apply to all of us.
  16. This actually came out earlier in 2017, but it was later in the year that I first heard this album: Very late summer/start of autumn feeling to it I think.
  17. Happy first day of Autumn everyone. Normally I’m looking forward to the changing season but actually feel quite sad we’re leaving summer behind this year. Would love a few more weeks of sun but I think the Atlantic rain machine is about to splutter into life as @CatchMyDrift predicted for his arrival. Summer in Glasgow and the west has been pretty decent, you’d be forgiven reading other areas of the forum that summer had actually happened anywhere. We had below average rain, above average sunshine, some very nice warmth and my only slight gripe is that we didn’t quite get an unbroken two week stretch. That’s a minor issue though and as far as the whole season goes, we can’t ask for much more here. Lovely day here today too. 20c and pretty much clear blue sky. Love it.
  18. Bit early for winter chat methinks… let’s enjoy the lingering summer and the gathering storms of autumn first.
  19. Yesterday evening was the first time since early May that the sun went down earlier than 9pm here. I think this is what makes each part of the year quite unique. In Spring when we have light nights it’s still pretty cold, whereas in late August into September it can still be pleasant and warm but with darker evenings coming in. Each part of the year ‘feels’ different and you get a sense of it being so even from the light, heat and the ambience.
