Indeed, after a few days of gloom, dreich and drizzle it's brightened up here too. Not exactly sunny, as there is a fair bit of cloud around but the little wind there is is from the north and it feels drier and far more pleasant than of late. 4c/2c currently. Still no frost so it's still a mudbath underfoot.

Some encouraging looking charts and models. The last meaningful snowfall here was Feb 21 and I'd give myself 50/50 odds of breaking that duck based on what we're seeing modelled. Meantime I continue to look at the frosty scenes with much envy. Another miserable day in coastal NE Fife, 5c after a low of 3c with drizzle on and off. Still waiting on a January air frost.

Showers again this evening. Here on the NE Fife coast it’s been a poor few days. Wasn’t expecting as much drizzle and gloom from the set up this week. With no frost it feels like a continuation of the wet last few months albeit with trivial rainfall amounts. Hoping for something drier and sunnier next week!

Milder over on the other side of the Tay. Leuchars reached 4c and I managed 5.8c here in Pittenweem. -25c this morning in Riga, Latvia which sits at the same latitude as here. Our maritime climate in full effect! Interesting. New Year celebrations have changed a lot, even since the 80s. It’s not what it was!

Great post @Polar Gael. Happy New Year to all on the thread. The last day of 2023 was very pleasant here and the first day of the New Year doesn’t look too shabby either! For those of us seeking drier weather it looks like high pressure takes control from the weekend. Exactly where it’s positioned and what happens after that still to be determined.

Morning all, Fairly mild start here at 6c, cooler up the road at Leuchars at 2c. December coming in above average temperature wise for most, mildest in the south of Scotland (Eskdalemuir +1.8c). The far north and Northern Isles have seen a below average mean (Baltasound at -1.2c compared to the mean). Rainfall at or above average for all, and as with the last few months the highest anomalies in the east (almost 300% of normal around Aboyne). My main hope for January is that it’s relatively dry for eastern Scotland (or at least near average!). I’m fed up of all the rain!

Fair temperature spread across Scotland this morning from +11c in the southwest to -2c in Shetland. The Northern Isles are the only part of Scotland with the mean monthly temperature anomaly still below average. The recent mild spell has brought everywhere else above average after the cold start to the month.

Quite bright here, we've dodged the rain so far and feeling mild at 11c with light winds. The Christmas day charts have been comedy gold: as soon as ECM goes cold, GFS shows mild and vice versa. At present it's GFS showing a cold day with ECM relatively mild. All in all I'd categorise the coming week as classic Scottish winter fayre, never particularly cold or mild but windy and unsettled with snow on the hills at times and a smaller risk of something wintry at lower levels, especially in the north. Could be a lot worse!
