  1. yes I tend to agree with you on this. those who say, get the cold in first and the snow will follow and the cold will be harder to shift doesn't necessarily ring true. the last 'potent' cold blast from the east was supposed to be a corker but the cold really only lasted a few days and was booted out relatively quicker by milder air again.
  2. i think we've been lucky in Northampton from this cold spell. on and off snow since wednesday with a good covering everywhere by this afternoon and this current snowfall is heavier than i thought we would get to be honest. Looking very snowy out there. My legs are so tired with all the walking.lol
  3. it's been an odd day in northampton too. they didnt really forecast us to have much but it has been near constant snow since 10pm last night. okay it has been mostly light and there was a lull an hour or tow ago but now it has picked up again and snowing moderately albeit finely. what with the blowing snow and the falling snow i think the forecasts havent really nailed it for this region. i hope their also wrong about the next systems and they end up tracking further east than the forecasts have mentioned so far. we shall see.
  4. maybe we've been the lucky ones in the midlands areas because in Northampton we have had continous snow since 11pm last night. Okay at times it is mainly light but there have also been a few heavier periods of snow. Basically had continuous snow falling for past 12 hours now.
  5. yes this 'beast' has really been more of a pussycat, in terms of delivering snowfall for most of us. March 2013 was infinately better in all ways. this so far has turned into a damp squid
  6. it's just typical of our region. we get extreme cold temperatures and it hardly snows at all. Then at other times we have temperatures just above freezing but lots of snow....which then promptly melts within a few hours. we can't win in Northamptonshire. This 'epic' period is a real let down for this region. I have seen much better 'snow' events in much milder conditions.
  7. i'm in the east midlands (northampton) but only very light flurries, nothing to really get excited about unfortunately. just wish we could have 30 mins of decently moderate snow thats all i ask.
  8. its typical, we had a really good snowfall back in early December but it wasnt cold enough to stick around for more than 1 day, now when we get really cold weather we end up getting zilch snow. can't win.
  9. i thought we in Northampton usually do quite well out of an easterly/north easterly wind flow, but so far we have had nothing out of this current cold spell. We did miles better back in early December when we had heavy snow for hours and that wasn't even really forecast for us. Just a shame it melted by the next day and wasn't in this current cold spell instead. Just typical when you actually get a decent amount of snow its not cold enough for it to stay more than a day.
  10. a day ago they were saying that anywhere that does get snow then it will definitely settle as the temperatures will be so low. What the hell are they saying now then?
  11. I'm never quite sure how Northamptonshire fairs in these easterly set ups to be honest. Yes it is one of the more promisingly best scenarios for us as we can be exposed to showers coming off the north sea but it is never a clear cut route to snow. I think I will have to wait and see what develops over the next week and hope we see something significant out of all of this, especially as it is such a rare occurrence and some are saying it could one of those once in a generation cold and snow event. Lets hope everyone in the country sees some snow at least.
  12. would just be our luck after all of this for the severe cold to be redirected to France and Spain. As is they don't get the cold and heat during the year as it is. We always get the scraps on this island.
  13. I think you're wrong. the current set up is looking like central, east and southern England could get the best out of this easterly. East Midlands especially would be among the best spots of the midlands area imo.
  14. Why are you so surprised? End of March 2013 was far colder and snowier than any of the preceding winter months of December January and February of that year.
  15. it would just be our luck (again) that Greece and Africa get the bitter cold and snow. You couldn't make this up if we tried. We must be the unluckiest country in the world for cold and snow when even Greece and Africa get it and we don't.
  16. it may have been a good winter for you lot up north but for us down south its been uneventful like the past few winters
  17. if this winter is not going to do anything substantial within the next 4 weeks then all I want is for warmer spring weather to begin. The last think I want is for winter to suddenly decide to rear its head in March and April and thus meaning we have to keep out heating on for even longer. I wonder if there any other counties which have to keep heating on for as long as we do (usually a good 7-8 months in most years), whilst not really having winter weather as such, just lots of cold cloud, wind and rain?
  18. isn't that the truth. I'm giving up being interested in the weather now. just going to take whatever it gives us.....probably more of the same, wind, cloud and rain in the UK.
  19. Well so much for this SSW then. The BBC forecast to 28th February has nothing spectacular with regards any cold temperatures and I can just imagine the most we will get from this much touted SSW is cold rain in March and April when that is the last thing we want. If we can't get any decent cold and snow even when we get a rare SSW there is no hope. I disagree with those who say the British Isles weather is so fascinating because it is so unpredictable. I would rather definite patterns in our weather so at least we know its going to be on a seasonal basis. I suppose we do have kind of reliable patterns really (cool, wet and windy most of the time).
  20. I was living in Swansea at the time and I would have said the snow level was easily 2 feet and even more in the drifted areas of snow. It was truly an incredible amount of snow the likes of which have not yet been repeated.
  21. I too was living just outside Swansea on the edge of the Gower Peninsula during this winter and I remember it vividly. The blizzard was extraordinary and I remember the drifts outside our house and the main roads being impassable for days. Totally once in a lifetime event for that area and I'm glad I was there to enjoy it. Needless to say for most of the other winters I lived in Swansea (about 15 years) we were lucky to get a sprinkling of snow in most winters and that was if we were very lucky.
  22. what i do not understand is we have a SSW and the BBC are talking about it becoming even milder with temperatures into double figures by the weekend. What is that all about. I thought SSW meant cold not balmy temperatures.
  23. okay i admit then this SSW might be able to offer us something, but whether that will be sufficient for any long lasting snow, we shall see. its just a pity it couldnt have happened in December, January or even early Feb rather than March.
  24. so much for the SSW then. If that can't deliver the cold goods then there is no hope anywhere else. Another winter wasted....unless you live in the North. If only the British Isles was geographically shunted 1000 miles further north then we might all get some action in the winter.
  25. i agree. considering how far north we are (and yes i know our warming influence is because of the gulf stream) but even so, the middle east and north africa gets more snow than we do for heavens sake. its ridiculous
