  1. snow call fall in temperatures up to 7c but tends to settle only when temperatures are 3c or less. Likewise rain can still fall when the temperature is less than 3c too, albeit icy rain.
  2. i have seen snow settling on very wet surfaces after hours of rain before it turns to snow and I'm always amazed at how snow starts to stick on wet surfaces if it comes down heavy enough and the temp and dew points fall. you wouldn't think it is possible until you actually see it happening. This has happened lots of times in Northampton the past few years.
  3. 2 days of decent cold. whoop de doo. our countries winters are pants.
  4. Basically our climate is pants. no getting away from that.
  5. and I fear the cold will suddenly make an appearance come April and May, precisely when it is too late and we don't want it. It's almost as if the UK is cursed when it comes to cold and snow. Yes we are on an island in the warming gulf stream but it would be nice to have at least one or two semi decent winters every decade or so rather than 2 every 100 years.
  6. yes this can safely be described as a typical British winter. in other words......boring dross of weather.
  7. i wonder why some people remain interested in model watching only to get disappointed when they don't come to fruition. I hate the british winters, they are predominantly mild and snowless most years and we cannot even seem to get a few days of cold and snow these days. i have given up even listening to what the models say now and just take each day as it comes....which undoubtedly will be the usual autumnal weather which we now seem to get throughout the year. No distinct seasons whatsoever.
  8. i agree. in fact temperatures are way above normal in anything so far this December.
  9. I predict the coming years UK weather will be unsettled and with days of sunshine and days of rain. it will also be cool days and warm days. that's the UK forecast. who needs multi million pound supercomputers in this country.
  10. I agree. what the point of multi million pound computers when they can hardly predict even a few days in advance. might as well just use a pine cone.
  11. are you really surprised, we, in the UK have been stuck in a perpetual Autumn now for the past few years (both in summer and winter alike).
  12. I have more chance of winning the lottery than I have all of these synoptics to come together
  13. true Bristle boy. you could usually guarantee a few days of lying snow every year in the midlands 30 years or so ago but now we're lucky if we get even 1 or 2 days a year apart from exceptional years like 2010 and even that wasn't that spectacular to be honest.
  14. oh well it's beginning to look like this winter will be the same as most other UK winters, even though the initial thought was a bit more optimistic. Can't say I'm ever surprised as most winters all we get is mild muck. Nothing changes.
  15. just started to rain in central London after being overcast for most of this afternoon. Still very warm and muggy though. Not sure we will get the torrential thunderstorms they forecasted though as the sky doesn't look that threatening right now.
  16. just a pity we don't get this cold set up when we want it (ie. winter). such rubbishy weather at the wrong times of the year in this country.
  17. I agree, the UK weather seems to be perpetual Autumn throughout the year these past few years. Horrible.
  18. Typical and I just knew something like this would happen. we get nothing all winter and then come the late spring we get a potent northerly arctic blast which is no good to anyone so late in the season. why can't the UK get its seasons sorted out properly?
  19. so there is a potent cold snap coming up in the next week or so, with the chance of snow falling (and accumulating) quite widely in the UK. why the hell didn't this happen during the actual winter months rather than so late when it actually in something no one wants now? Typical British weather. It never does what you want when you want it. I love snow but even I don't want to see it this late in the season. I want the warmth now. Winter had its chance and blew it big time this year.
  20. all this talk of SSW. what's the point now it is too late for it to be of any significant use for any cold and snow. all we will have is cold rain. too little too late. This winter can now take a hike. it's been rubbish.
  21. I've really had enough of this insipid winter now and although I love the snow and cold all I want now is sun and heat. Knowing the UK climate though it will now decide it wants to throw winter at us even though it is Spring and we will have a few months of cold rain instead. Hate it.
  22. I'm throwing in the towel now as far as this winter is concerned. It's been utter tripe and can't wait to see the back of it now. Even easterly winds can't give us the cold we so deserve. I just hope next winter isn't as bad as this one (surely it cant be?). I just hope we get some decent summer weather to make up for the last few months (although saying that knowing the UK weather, we will probably have the coldest summer in 100 years.lol
  23. i hate to admit it but i think you are right. okay even our summers arent great or reliable but at least we can be almost assured that we will get some hot sunny days whereas winter cannot even muster a few snow days now.
  24. we have had 1 day of lying snow which is more than most have had but is quite frankly ridiculous, even for the UK's mild winters. we used to have an average of 10 days lying snow but this seems to have reduced to 1 or 2 at best most winters now. i used to look forward to winter but now i am starting to dread them as all we end up with is gales and cold rain/sleet. i hate it.
  25. this winter has been total 'pants' and must be one of the worst monotonously boring winters since (or even surpassing) 2013 and thats saying something. i can't even bring myself to look forward to next winter now if this is the way our winters are going. utter dross.
