  1. I tend to agree with you on that although cold westerly's are a waste of time as they fail to produce anything other than rain unless you're at altitude in Scotland or Northern England. I am a coldie but if we are going to get westerly's I would prefer the warmer variety so at least I can turn the heating down a little and save some money.
  2. I must admit that if we don't have one last good snowfall event before this winter is out and the much talked about SSW fails to give us something decent, then I for one am going to stop watching the models or be interested in hearing what the weather may or may not do and just take it as it comes each day. At least that way I won't be constantly disappointed. After all, forecasting is nigh impossible for our island as it is influenced by so many factors, unlike our continental cousins who have far more reliable weather patterns.
  3. I wish some people would stop going on about snow not being worth having in February or March as it doesn't hang around because of the sun's strength and lengthening days. There have been occasions when we have had snow in late March and it has stay around for a few days whereas on other occasions we have had snow in December or January and it has literally melted within a day so that proves the conditions are more dependent on the atmospherics more than the months themselves in the winter. March can be much colder and snowier than the other winter months.
  4. just shows how snow starved we are in the UK when we are all excited over a few flakes falling out of the sky, me included. God knows what the country would be like if we actually had a decent snowfall.
  5. i don't think the fact it is February decreases the chances of lying snow even for a number of days if the conditions are right. March 2013 saw a good snowfall with the snow hanging around for a few days because the conditions were perfect. We can get snow in the very depths of winter but it can also melt straight away or only stay around for a day or so before it melts purely because the conditions are not right. I think we sometimes put too much emphasis on needing snow in December and January thinking these are the best months but in reality February and March are probably the best months even if the sun is slightly stronger than in the other 2 months and the days are getting longer. Just because the days are short and sun is lower in the sky doesn't necessarily mean its a guarantee of snow and cold.
  6. But this is the 'moans' page so why are you so surprised?
  7. I can't quite understand those who say this winter is really interesting especially with the model watching. Apart from December's snowfall event (which lasted for all of 2 days lying snow...wow), this winter has been a real let down especially as it was forecast to be colder and snowier than the past few winters. Personally I have seen very little in the way of frosts and as I said, apart from December we have only seen one other snow event the whole winter. I know people will say, well that is what our winters are like on this little island, but if a few frosts and one or two snow events equals a 'good' winter then I would rather have neither and just stop getting my hopes up when the models predict a good cold spell only for it to back down at the last minute and we end up getting the usual predictable cold damp grey weather we are all to familiar with.
  8. although we have had 2 snow events this winter I would hardly call this winter a good one by any means to be honest here in Northampton. Even the 'good' snow event back in early December failed to stick around for more than 2 days and last weekends 'sunday' snowfall was gone by the end of the day, so I tally our lying snowfall to around 3 days so far this year. Yes, I suppose its better than the last 4 winters but no way am I happy with 3 day of lying snow and in no way would I call that a good winter.
  9. still snowing moderately here in Northampton with a good few cms covering everywhere. was a nice surprise to wake up to i have to admit. Just a shame the mild sector is inevitable and its now just a case of waiting for the rain to take over. oh well it is good while it lasted.
  10. exactly. Those who say we should move to another country if we are so fed up with the British climate need to get a reality check. Most of us can't just 'move' to another country unless you have a) a job to go to or b) enough money to support your emigration. I have neither so I am stuck in this country unfortunately.
  11. why the hell couldn't this little island have rooted itself 600 miles further north, that way all of us could enjoy the snow and not just Scotland every time.
  12. And I thought the forecast for this winter was supposed to be generally colder with more snow events? Just shows how much weather forecasting is a guessing game. I think I could have forecasted another dross windy winter with rain. Don't need multi million pound computers to know what the British winter is going to be like. Must be the worst weather in the world.
  13. i personally have given up looking at the models as they swap and change on an almost hourly basis, so basically they are not even worth watching. And as for the UK, i think we should resign ourselves to saying goodbye to snowy winters (or even frosty ones) as they seem to be a thing of the past now. the past several winters have been abysmal.....unless wind and rain is your 'thing'. I have living in the country.
  14. i like your optimism and really hope it turns out to be an all snow event here in northampton. its about time we got something memorable after so many 'drought' years.
  15. we tend to get quite a few marginal events which i hate. lets hope tomorrows snow comes through for us and the whole event is one of snow. we can do it i know we can.
  16. Northampton missed out completely on the midlands snowfest yesterday so i am hoping we will get something out of sundays snowfall.....please. i dont think i could take another disappointment. at least we've got an upgrade from yesterdays forecast which was heavy sleet and now its heavy snow. Please come to fruition and dont downgrade now.
  17. I really hope Northampton gets a good dumping of snow tonight and tomorrow. we havent even had so much as one flake so far and the past few years have been awful. I really need to see one decent snowfall or i will go insane. At least the Met forecast has upgraded for our region since yesterday when it was mainly sleet but now heavy snow, so fingers crossed it doesnt downgrade between now and tomorrow morning.
  18. at least you have that luxury of having family in a snowy clime so can just nip off there for free board and lodging. i wish i was as lucky.
  19. the only time we are more or less guaranteed any worthwhile snow event in our region is when we get a north easterly or easterly.....and they are both a rarity, so basically we end up with crap. for such a small island its ridiculous how the weather is each region is totally different. An island this small should have the same weather across the board.
  20. what's the point of these charts if they don't come to fruition? There is no point.
  21. you're telliing me. we havent had even a flake in the east midlands. absolute rubbish.
  22. for such a small poxy island its ridiculous how when we get snow (emphasis on the 'when') it manages to confine itself to about 50 square miles rather than the whole country. we can't win in this country.
