  1. Thunderstorms moving towards SW England as I type, lightning activity not to much at the moment.

two images first is satellite the white cloud are the cells, some with lightning, the second is a satellite and lightning overlay with circled areas being where lightning is and are thunder/thunderstorm cells with arrows pointing in the direction where they look to be moving to.

  2. Really was cool today, almost felt cold to be honest after what we've had. Largely due to the high cloud cover and higher winds.

Peaked at about 23c I think. Would feel sort of warm if the cloud wasn't so vast and the winds weren't higher than they've been.

Tomorrow looks much warmer and less cloud cover so should be closer to what we've been getting, should be quite a bit better than today at least.

Looking at the forecasts just now and it seems to be a big improvement on when I looked yesterday, will still be more unsettled next week than last week but doesn't look nearly as bad with temps staying half decent and not so much rain as was on the forecasts for next week yesterday.

I take it you like the heat! As I said I better with it outside than indoors it's been to much heat indoors. I love sunny high pressures but a moderate temperature of 25C would be great with a breeze in day light winds in eve and cool breeze at night....0: not much variation to ask for then!

  3. Amazing feel much more comfortable in the flat tonight with the lower temps,  a few degrees down it's just about 28C now indoors still feeling very warm though,  been 30C-32C for many days inside the flat and 30C at nights mostly, and with a cooler stronger breeze now it feels nice compared to being permanently hot for so long. outside earlier late eve really pleasant feel about the air, if only we could have mid way hot days sunshine with cooler nights and a few storms and rain at times that be great.

  4. Downloaded an interesting (ppt)Microsoft Powerpoint presentation on thunderstorms and formation thought I would share. The file download is just over 4MB. Information is all about what everything means and how storms work included are some amazing pictures too.

    AOS101_DIS305L12 - Thunderstorm formation.ppt

(you can open file then save as a PDF to read as that if you prefer)

  5. Looks as though the SW UK starts to get some storm cell clusters later Sunday possible MCS . Now the thing is it's not developed yet so cannot really know where or how big how many cells form at this stage, could turn out more active across the south then we think right now (just my thoughts)

    Edited meant to put clusters..

    New Edit:

    (To include possibly Central Southern)

  6. GFS 00z shows thunderstorms developing quite widely across southern and central Britain as early as Monday afternoon then keeps them coming throughout the week with the threat moving ever northward.

Three possible plumes - Monday, Tuesday and Friday with all these starting life down south and expanding north and east through the day and into the night. This week could offer some great opportunities for overnight lightning shows, and many people will get to see it because sleeping will be so difficult it may not be worth trying what with uncomfortable humidity and heat plus lots of noise from above Posted Image

Going to be amazing! I'd expect some very intense lightning displays, those that don't get them directly over there are should see or hear them around.

  7. Mid next week maybe earlier(mainly SW) things on the thunder front could I should say should get quite active, I can say also we might(lot's of could's/might's/maybe's)get some active night storms, this due to timings of the plume and kick off and interactions also any homegrowns going on late too. For imports maybe MCS these storms build over in France, these storms during late afternoon and evening these move north into the night making landfall on south coast late evening first moving north.

I would expect the whole of the South UK (at first) is at risk of some heavy thunderstorms and don't want to mention the possibility of flash flooding although we need the rain it could come to much at once.

As for what to do if it gets hotter into early next week, I couldn't agree more. It doesn't even have to be much hotter than it has been to feel substantially hotter with the added humidity. It's quite shocking to go outside at 3PM when it is 30C outside and see that everyone down the street has their windows wide open! I've been trying to make a habbit of keeping all windows and curtains closed in the afternoon, and then opening the windows at night when it cools down. The only problem with that is the crane flies that decide to invade the house. I hate the damn things...

I am keeping curtains closed during the day window open as I do work at home(I like to close them when out),  thin enough curtains to be bright in the flat though, then at night window open from half to wide with gap in curtains until late which let's cooler air flow in it's still hot in here but would be far more if I didn't do what I am I'd expect, lap tops kick out some heat so that's not helping!! the flannel round neck only thing really helps me cope with inside temps up to 32C day and around 30C at night as it is now, also lots of water too, and other drinks like tea/coffee hot drinks makes me hotter yes I know but I let them cool a bit! I should not but need them caffeinated drinks only having a couple a day though(I'm not a fan of cold caffeine type drinks), I have lucozade this is good to have, they advise not to have to much caffeine or hot drinks I am having far less then in winter. obviously they say cold drinks is the best option because it lowers our inner temperatures which stops higher risk of over heating. I can say I've not drunk so much water for years!! I have had minor heat stroke many years a go up at Silverstone race course an event was on and it was a heatwave clear blue intense it was I did not do what I was advised and paid for it, it was sunburn on my head(mainly front)and neck mostly at back and maybe lack of fluids although I do remember having lots of water/fruit drinks that day so being in hot sunshine for many hours without a hat added to it I think. That was only minor heat stroke and I still felt so terrible so dizzy and weak with it.

  11. Need to ask about an event during the 90s, I can't find my weather records books at the moment, it was a great storm that lasted all night on a hot May night sometime in the 90s that's all I remember date wise sorry! I believe it was an MCS of vast scale, I remember watching it come up from the south with lighting flashing frequently in the south around 12am/1am and east to west horizon, it lasted until early morning it moved right over and to London(was in Surrey)then it moved up the east side UK to NE. I want some videos so some links would be great. I think it was beginning of May possibly the 5th. Thanks.

Not saying much on storms at moment but I'm interested in the FAX chart for Wednesday.. as mentioned these change(but not always to much) but I expect something like that set-up maybe as shown, we should get more space for action let's say less eastwards usual shifts.. better not I don't like saying that llet's reverse it erm.. more easttwords shift.. (yep jumble word I know!)

  12. Midnight and it is still 21C out. Had the fan on all day, and opened the windows now that it is cooler outside, and I still feel like I'm burning up. I guess I have no one but myself to blame for getting sunburned though..

BBC weather predicting 32C for Heathrow on Monday, and a temperature range of 20/36 for Thursday. Obviously with the way that the models are changing, nothing even more than a few days out is set in stone, but it seems that there is still a real chance of seeing a new hottest day of the year before this heatwave is up!

One amazing event and can it really get hotter that is going to be incredible!

If sitting/standing Use a wetish flannel/cloth/small towel or something round back of neck and over shoulders I'm doing this and it's helping a lot! nice breeze tonight still hot flat and very warm out there.

Hoping Saturday eve cools for the night we need the break and because next week is going to be high high humidity very hot again but maybe hotter, would be more difficult to cool be prepared everyone we know what to do, if not read all heatwave advice given by the NHS, news and weather sites.

Are provide links in a while.

  13. Do understand people struggling in warmth in this country as most British homes are designed to keep heat in rather than let it out. I know when I used to live in my parents place it could easily end up too hot to sleep. Again when I lived in a mid-terrace house it could end up very toasty with the living room hitting 35c+ (in 2006). Bedroom caught all the evening sun too.

So I do understand the issue although of course now it isn't an issue in my 'belongs in southern Spain' house so I'm lapping up this first chance to put it through its paces!

Gorgeous deep blue skies today without the haze or anything - perfection. 17.8c min and now 22.7c.

Think the North Sea will come to spoil the party tomorrow sadly Posted Image

I was talking to someone about family they have in Spain and that the houses over there have thick stone walls and marble floors or something and floor stays cold at night keeping heat out too because of thick walls.
