  1. I's funny how I was absolutely ridiculed a couple of days back for suggesting that a period of dull non eventful weather followed by an eventual return of the  Atlantic could be a possibility, based on all output we've seen since I'd say that was pretty fair shout.

It's been dull and uneventful for what seems like weeks down here - praying for something to cling onto on the 18z run but expect more of the same as you say zzz

  2. Nobody knows. That is the answer. All this what if this happens, what oif that happens is really amusing. nobody can tell what is going to happen with the weather. I wish people would take heed of this. Look at the "storm" that hit us, 10 days out it was looking like 1987, then when it actually arrived it was no comparison. Lesson learned? I very much doubt it.

So why are you viewing the MOD thread - seems a bit pointless for you if it's all a complete waste of time Posted Image

  3. Well at least the models weren't promising snowmegeddon, in which case I can imagine there would be a severe bout of depression on the model thread. As far as I could see the most I could have hoped for in the near FI range would have been near ice days and 'some' snow if i was lucky.

Now the autopsies start on which model did best etc etc etc. during this period.. Posted Image

  4. Apparently we are going to see up-to 90mph gusts this weekend...............if you believe the express which I don't

and to quote from the headline - Madden says

"And he warned that temperatures will also drop through next month rapidly turning heavy downpours to snow."

Lol well if that happens I'll subscribe for a year to his sitePosted Image

  5. I beg to differ with that.

I mentioned in the storm thread last week, that 45mph gusts had brough down trees around this area before the stronger winds had arrived. Monday night/mornings winds would have potentially weakened alot of trees that didn't fall over, and again, with soft soil, there's enough to warrant a risk of disruption.

Yes there will be some localised issues but I just meant its not a disruptive spell of weather that's coming up (for the majority) - just standard autumnal weather !

  6. You think it's ridiculous for the families that lost those 4 people then? You think they 'enjoyed' the storm or wanted more? I think you need to get things in perspective and just because you didn't get trees falling onto your particular house or location it doesn't mean it didn't affect others to a greater or lesser extent. The worst kind of IMBY attitude there and whilst we all enjoy the weather, I can't see many revelling in the destructive nature of it?

Additionally when we have had snow, ice or any other conditions where loss of life has occurred, I don't see anybody 'conveniently' forgetting about it?

My point was though that lots of guys on these forums look forward to some snow and freezing weather and for some reason this is ok - if we take your point literally then we shouldn't be craving for this weather or any type of extreme weather to arrive as loss of life will undoubtably occur. Thats fine but not what the majority I would guess come on to these forums for

  7. + 4 people dead, I think that's enough of a storm surely?

Oh really thats a ridiculous statement - if we had 2 cms of snow and some ice , there would probably be 4 people killed on the roads due to the conditions , but then its not caused by a storm so conveniently forgotten.

What appears to be a consensus on here then is that if 1 death occurs due to abnormal weather conditions then nobody should enjoy it - crazy

  8. I adore snow more than any other type of weather, but as far as I am concerned the same principle applies in terms of "how much" before it becomes disruptive in the same way as wind, thunderstorms etc. Purely to illustrate my point, I am quite happy with 15 to 20cms of snow from showers off the North Sea and then some hard frosts that keeps it with sunshine and a pause in the weather afterwards that allows the roads to be cleared and people to be able to get on with day to life whilst still carrying on enjoying the fun and beauty of the snow. But larger amounts than this with (f.e) a full on gale that cripples the system, leaves people without power, and then is followed by a rapid thaw and floods and further causes disruption is no fun and beyond simply being a 'weather enthusiast' This is simply an illustration of the point - there are various permutations of the same thing. Its only 'fun and interesting' as long as it doesn't interfere with everyday life. What is the excitement and fun in that? Therefore speaking for myself, then severe blizzards are not necessarily what I am craving or 'desparate for' Of course no-one can control the weather, but that is actually not the point that is being made here.

Sorry but have to disagree, 2cms of snow will cause interference with peoples lives especially down here in the south ! You suggest that you would like 15-20 cms of snow as acceptable and then its all conveniently cleared away and everybody gets on with their lives. That amount would cripple the south and certainly roads around my area would take a week or so to get cleared, also lives would be at risk due to a huge amount of road accidents, people falling over and breaking bones etc etc.

I would agree with you that we wouldn't want another 1987 storm, but to be honest that last storm was a fairly tepid affair - sure electricity problems and a few trees down but in the grand scheme of things not a storm I wouldn't mind re-appearing to be honest

  9. Other than the obvious reason for being glad to see the back of that storm the other day, there is a second albeit much more superficial reason for being glad that no further exceptionally windy weather is expected and that is the dross that gets posted on the dedicated threads set-up for these things. Maybe it was also unfortunate that the storm co-incided with the start of half term and therefore all the little darlings being off school were able to come online and post their spam...Posted Image

Why people are looking out for damaging winds and further storms that simply threaten days without electricity, risk to safety, loss of trees and some crushed cars etc etc I have not the slightest idea why.

Probably because its more exciting than the usual banal weather we normally get. Severe blizzards will produce the same risks but I reckon a large majority of posters are desperate for that kind of weather. Plus there is absolutely nothing we can do about the weather so if it comes let those who enjoy it, just enjoy it - no problem for me

  10. I've only just logged-in this morning, and therefore don't have a feel for the tone of discussion this morning, so I don't know how much Met-bashing has already occurred.  I thought, however, that I'd post the opinions of someone I know from another (non weather-related) forum.  While his post may appear to be obvious trolling, I know from experience that such comments are actually his genuine and strongly-held opinions:

Anybody got anything to add apart from "what a pillock"?

Doesn't surprise me - plenty of guys here in Southampton saying much the same I'm afraid

  11. Yeah but would you feel comfortable surfing in roughing seas knowing somebody is missing probably dead because of the conditions just a few miles away? You are surfing and helicopters are flying around nearby looking for somebody?I think the fact that Sky News interviewed them and showed it, when a few miles away, some lad has probably lost his life to the sea, I think that what's gets me not so much those swimmers. I think Sky News were tactless in doing that.

I agree that the Sky News bit was insensitive and tactless given the circumstances. Surfers however save many lives usually swimmers who get caught in rip tides, so although very tragic, it wouldn't stop me enjoying a sport i love
