  1. I'm moaning aren't I? So I'm posting in exactly the right place. Also I think your holier than thou attitude is very rude. I love weather but I'm not so unstable that I throw tantrums and get depressed about it. And you should read the strat thread, maybe you'd gain some actual meteorological knowledge.

I know there is but thank you for not encouraging them!

Looks like you were bang out of order with your earlier post jbuffett ..... It's been deleted. I don't think personal jibes are a part of the topic of this thread or anywhere on Netweather?

  2. I've had the most entertaining time this past couple of weeks. Been glued to the Model Thread instead of rubbish TV, been going to bed late so I could stay up for the pub run to roll out and getting grumpy with my 5 year old when he wanted to use the iPad! I still haven't the foggiest idea how to read a chart but hey ho :-)

AND Netweather broke its record for forum numbers online.

Sod the snow and ice it's the chase we love!

  3. The Parable of the Model Thread

In the time of Cameron, in the land of Netweather there was a thread where prophets and soothsayers gathered with the naysayers to foresee the future of the winter.

In this time of withered sun and neutral ENSO anticipation of a colder than average winter had been for-seen by the one they called Glacier Point, a new messiah, King of the Nerds!

I his wisdom he had prophesized a cooler time , a time of frost and of snow, a time where peace may reign in the land of Netweather and all would be still and quiet and frozen.

And LO! It came to pass that the mechanical mind of the GFS did hint at a period when the month of November would roll into December that the mythical northern blocking would occur! There was great excitement and happiness from the masses and much debate on the exact nature of the promised cold spell. Lines were drawn on charts, and minds great and small bent their will onto the task of foresight into the future weather. As time rolled on towards the fabled time the GFS began it’s backtrack, yes cold would come but it looked feeble and weak and there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth!

"Oh great Glacier Point!" they cried

    "Why hast thou forsaken us?"

There came a deep rumbling from the depths of Netweather, a rumbling which became a roar! The ground split asunder the masses and the nerds fled for they were very afraid!

From the bowels of Netweather there came a great light, a light bright and clean like freshly fallen snow! And there came from the light a voice such as that of the tinkling of slowly melting icicles dripping into a puddle or something.

" I am Paul! LORD of Netweather!!! And I give unto you my winter forecast! Oh you of little faith! Glacier Point has shown you the light and yet you did not believe! Now hear him speak and let none be afraid for it is news of great JOY!"

There then appeared from the light a screen and on this screen appeared Glacier Point in all his glory.

" I am Glacier Point! And I bring you great news! The coming season will indeed be cold!"

The nerds rejoiced and resumed their squabbling …

    Utterly brilliant :-)

  4. A lot depends on the direction from which the cold ends up coming.

A straight Northerly and your area stands a change of showers due to the wishbone effect but as Arran says, whether they will actually fall as snow is debatable due to your costal location.

An E or NE direction and unless it's a strong flow it probably won't reach much beyond the Pennines if it even gets that far.

TBH I don't hold out much hope IMBY from showers with our best chance being embedded troughs which could well crop up or from an attempted beakdown from the west although these seem to have been non events for many years.

Either way it'll be cold and at least feel a little festive but if it's anything other than a dusting of white, i thing much of our region could be dissapointed, this time around at least.

Many thanks for that :-) We have had inches of snow here 09/10 and during the cold spell around the late 80's. lots of snow along this coast but as you say it all depends on the direction and I suspect the temps play a great part in whether it sticks with all the salt in the air!

Many thanks again for your reply.

  5. When was the last time members had a proper thunderstorm? And I mean a proper thunderstorm overhead as opposed to a shower with the odd thunderclap now and then or one that just missed.

I reckon it was over 2 years ago here, I can't even recall when I last heard thunder, the last time I definitely saw ligthtning was at distance from late August last year from those cells in the Liverpool area.

We talk about the lack of snow but the lack of thunder let alone thunderstorms is even more stark

About 6 years ago we had a load of them here. Only reason I remember is because I had just had a flat roof put onto the extension and it leaked - A LOT ! :-(
