  1. I can understand members impatience but now the cold is here it will not be long before the Christmas card scenes appear. As to a proper dumping that could be some time in the distance.
  2. Things looking much better this morning, as things stand if we do not get a dumping in the next 2 weeks I will be amazed.
  3. Normally with this weather pattern we would be expecting a good covering of the white stuff but with sea temperatures being what they are there is a possibility initially snow could be reserved for high ground.
  4. I have not seen a ground frost so far this autumn, I would hazard a guess that 7 c has been the lowest so far and too make matters worse it seems to me that it will be well into November that I experience an air frost. I keep hoping for a radical change in the Synoptics but there are no definite signs at the moment.
  5. Old wives tale I regret to say, as to the algorithms I believe they are predicting a front loaded winter we shall as ever get any more definite news on this wonderful site.
  6. All my life I have wanted cold cold severe winters but this year with the cost of heating spiralling out of control I wish the opposite but as others have said Sod’s law will probably occur. Being pensioners it is a great worry.
  7. We had a couple of hours of steady rain around 11am and then dull but dry,I am not complaining we needed it,like Chris says it’s more like winter temperatures tonight.
  8. 25.3 here at the moment, a blessed relief from yesterday. We are about 12 miles from the coast and woke up to think mist and sea fog(not something I remember in August in previous years). We could do with some rain but at the present I do not see much coming.
  9. Thank heavens it is not a pyroclastic volcano with its relative proximity to the capital.
  10. We have a cool !! 31.2 at the moment which strangely is the highest I have had today, tomorrow is forecast higher but we are off to the lakes which s supposed to be a tad cooler than here.
  11. No shortage of the wet stuff today , check the radar it’s just churning the clouds very slowly around and around. Only saving grace is that we need the rain.
  12. I remember the start of the spell very well, the bbc forecast had hinted at the chance of an easterly for a few days then dropped it. living in Sunderland within 3 miles of the coast I remember the Sunday morning clearly when the forecast was for a cloudy dull day with light drizzle. About 9am I noticed mist like cloud rushing in from the east and in no time the sky was obscured, heavy drizzle commenced which lasted for less than an hour and then the cloud disappeared completely, I went outside and all the leaves and twigs had frozen water droplets hanging in from them. The front that went through gave us no snow ( we had to wait until the next day to get some) but reports said on its journey westward plenty of snow occurred. The temperature given at Mowbray park weather station the next day quoted 9am temperature 50f and 10 am temperature 32f. Mowbray Park is in the centre of Sunderland.
  13. When did the snow start in 62? Afront moved south on Christmas Day and came to a halt further south on Boxing Day and this was responsible for the heavy snow in the south on Boxing Day. My area just hat snow showers.
  14. The winter of 62-63 remains fresh in my memory ,I was mid twenties so adult or not I enjoyed the sledging. I still hav e the D.W.R for the main 3 winter month s And still find myself saying if only. Enough reminiscing , let me wish all members a very merry Christmas and a happy snowy new year.
  15. What a wonderful post Catacol, sometimes I have trouble with the scientific points but you spell it out so clearly, as an older member with clear memories of the winters of 62-63 and 78-79 I was full of hope for the present month but I suppose until oooo on Christmas morn there remains a flicking candle.
  16. It is still all up in the air, my amateur take on it is that elevated ground in our area will see their white Christmas , lower ground more dubious but we are in the game. Just hope I have not put the hex on it.
