  1. Entering week 4 today of the freeze of 2010/2009... Was up at around 6am this morning and it was sleeting heavily in Edinburgh. Too much of an easterly component and it levelled last night's 3cms of fresh snow into solid ice. And then it snowed again on top - never ending cycle!
  2. Just looking at those ECM charts and remember - for precipitation from a straight easterly to be wintry and stick at sea level we need uppers of -8ºC... Hmmmm, be careful what we wish for!
  3. Off the sea from a NE direction - Edinburgh's stuff will have to come over Fife first.
  4. Radar says to me a brief (say 45mins) but potent band of snow into Fife and Edinburgh about 5pm.
  5. Yep and the uppers at -9ºC, so cold enough to settle even at the coast if the wind were to swing round a bit... But all that is forecast is a straight NE'ly for the next 12-24hrs.
  6. Aye it was -32ºC last night - think someone would have noticed by now!
  7. Aye thankfully everyone's ok. But as you say that's the Highland mainline shut for a few days just as the weather affects the A9.
  8. Pics here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/roybrown/ This is a very serious incident.
  9. Something definitely developing at pace over Fife and Lothian at the moment - started snowing here in the last ten minutes...
  10. Just been reading that the daily Tesco freight train up to Inverness has derailed at Carrbridge, with the loco and several wagons plummeting down the embankment and the driver is missing - weather not helping the rescue effort...
  11. We could all get our hairdryers out and point them north to help generate more ppn LS?!
  12. Yeah behind the front, the 850s fall from -6 to -10/11ºC ZL
  13. If we knew the answer to that, it wouldn't be so interesting! It's -2ºC at the airport, and the upper 850 temps won't fall below -6ºC - but as a couple of posts in the model thread have discussed the wet bulb temp in this cold front is marginal, but is better east compared to west. So make of that what you will - I'm not making a guess I'll see if there's a forecaster about who can give a proper opinion.
  14. I see Aviemore has been reporting light rain and the temp rose from 0 to 1ºC... The whole front appears to be 3 hrs later than progged by the Met Fax charts yesterday. This is weather watching at its best!
  15. I love that fax chart for 18h00 tomorrow. I mean, a cold front - it's currently -8ºC and today's max here was -2ºC
  16. Benbecula seems a little chilly even for this spell of weather according to http://www.xcweather.co.uk
  17. Anybody else getting a new local BBC forecast after the local news after the main BBC evening news? BBC Scotland weather's lovely Judith Ralston has just been on here with a decent 90 sec slot - and then the main UK weather...
  18. Yep - great eh?! Welcome to netweather Robert - you've joined in the posting at an exciting time! My advice us to completely disregard everything the BBC 5 day forecasts say
  19. They're not bad charts LS for Glasgow/Edinburgh - 3 hours of snow. Ayrshire/D&G gets pasted later too. Nope - t'was all mine!
  20. Yeah I had a look at that too Robbie. Occluded fronts do that every time - but this is a cold front. From memory I can't recall how they pan out, but let's see what the NMM says later
  21. Indeed Blizzardo - cold front from the north sinking south over the whole of Scotland. -7ºC uppers in front of it with -10ºC uppers behind it. Splendid. I'll post the NMM model charts for tomorrow night this evening when the 12Z run comes out
  22. Nice chart for London and SE England and the north of England on Wednesday afternoon:
  23. Just been out for a very agreeable lunch down at The Shore in Leith - where the snow is lying on the dock side. Very nice to see
