I know none of you care, but I'm quite excited as have just treated myself to a new weather station. Can't wait for it to arrive, what's the betting spring will come in the next 3-5 days?!
They're worth every penny! Which one did u get?

Looks like another crappy, boring week ahead on the winter weather front - this is going down as a bad winter and easily comparable to the ones of the late 90s/early noughties.
Did you know that an 'average' winter in our neck of the woods brings 6 to 7 snowdays with snow lying? (according to METO stats)
Really shows how turbo poo this winter has been
-
grass still white with slushy dusting determined to hang on although pavements etc 95% clear - no ice which is a positive though
-
Morning guys, at least some of us had a covering during day light so we could appreciate it before the rain took it away!!
Anyone in the know (iceberg etc) able to say how our chances are this week for a repeat snow event? MOD is full of jolly saaafff easterners so lots of imby-ism going on!!!

Today's nothing - almost 7 years ago now, we had 179mm in 4 days. That's when Carlisle narrowly avoided being washed away.
wow thats some serious rainfall. i need 144mm in the next 16 hours or so to match it lol
-
35mm so far for me, over 30mm from todays storm. peaked at 14.7mm an hour when the squall line passed over The highest recorded in my garden for over a year and a half (time i've had a rain gauge)

3.3 for me, thanks

Hi fluffytrollop, whats your budget?

Amazing pictures, any suggestions for a favourable location (southwest) and time of year to see these types of clouds? i've read about hilly areas being a good place to start.
Would really like to catch some snaps to add to my collection

I bought a used VP2 sensor array from ebay 'condition unknown' for £50, have the anemometer plus sender unit talking to my Vue console as an additional much higher wind sensor.
A similar kit from Davis is [gulp] "How much!"
bargain, think thats the route i'll take for additional temp sensors. have been thinking about having a seperate summer/winter and not bother moving one twice a year.
or is that really lazy?!

Wondered if anyone treated themselves to some new equipment this Christmas for their weather stations?
I now have a UV sensor for my Oregon WMR100 which should prove useful in the summer for predicting 'cooking times' in garden!

Yueltide greetings everyone

Why are people suggesting they can see the effects of SSW already in the Model Output thread? This event hasnt even happend, nor is it forecast? It has been picked up on some models are MIGHT happen. Is that true?
I think its the warming of the stratosphere not a SSW which people are seeing in the models.

This time last year it was bloody baltic in Devon (Plymouth),as was the year before that, and the year before that also.
Looks like it is back to the mild winters we are accustomed to then ??..So warm today,i had to have one of these.
How have you come to that conclusion?
-
But would it not be a case of coincidence, surely the chance of what type of winter conditions we can expect is the same as flipping a coin?
So far I've seen wintry showers 3 times this winter whereas someone maybe 30/40 miles away hasn't. I don't think this is due to my location being due anything.
This is only my opinion. I see what your saying though bristol

Agreed - it does seem set for a while yet.
I said a few weeks ago in Winter discussion thread that i felt things would 'even out' this winter i.e. average temps, little snow for us - no science involved - just a 'law of winter averages' approach - we're due a benign, average winter.
Nothing i've seen since or looking ahead seems to indicate anything else for us.
I think i called it a winter of two halves i.e. North and South.
The colder, snowier stuff will be confined to north of the Midlands with the odd incursion down to these parts. That's how i see it.
love to be proved wrong - you know from the rlast few winters on this thread i love the cold and snow. My only crumbs of comfort comes from GP's forecast and Chino's thoughts for second half of Winter with a warming stratosphere (not that i really understand much of that stuff! )
Not sure we should be so downbeat already, and there certainly is no such thing as law of averages or being 'due' any type of weather, it is what it is.

The beasts of Westbury caught on camera today!

Well what a difference a year makes, the image below shows what it was like outside my front door on this day last year!
Very nice pic, last year was awesome. Think that'll be a once in a lifetime event for these parts for the length of time we had snow on the ground.
