  1. People that are fretting about whether the main frontal snow event will reach Yorkshire or not, don't! If it does great, if it doesn't deliver, charts like this forecast for Saturday; Will see Yorkshire & Lincs get battered by heavy snow showers piling in from the North Sea snow machine. The strength of the wind and the potency of the uppers should mean that the Easterly should produce quite an unstable flow just to the North of the low pressure as it moves away to the South. The shower activity could easily produce as much snow as any frontal event in my opinion. No guarantees of course but things do look very promising for this nonetheless, and with more fronts expected to head in from the West early next week, the possibilities for snow in the next few days are endless. In the words of Jon Bon Jovi.....Keep the Faith!
  2. Well this was issued by the Met Office for our region only a couple of hours ago; Headline: Dry but very cold today. Snow expected Friday. Today: Freezing fog will be slow to clear in places. Dry with some cloud breaks expected to develop giving a few sunny spells. However, it will remain very cold with temperatures remaining below freezing throughout the day. Maximum Temperature -1 °C. Tonight: Dry with some clear periods in the east and rather more cloud in the west. Bitterly cold southeasterly winds increasing through the night. Minimum Temperature -5 °C. Friday: Mainly dry with some sunny spells initially, though some snow showers likely in the east. Snow becoming widespread during the afternoon and evening with a brisk, bitterly cold southeasterly wind. Maximum Temperature 0 °C. Outlook for Saturday to Monday: Very cold with an ice risk throughout. Windy with further snow likely Saturday. Winds ease Sunday, mainly dry but rather cloudy and misty. Windy again Monday with more snow possible. Issued at: 0400 on Thu 17 Jan 2013 So hardly anything to get down about! As mentioned above, Lisa Gallagher also mentioned that 'there will be significant falls of snow in places so stay tuned'
  3. I have to say that my hunch is that the snow warnings for Yorkshire on Friday may be removed tomorrow but then replaced by further warnings for heavy snow showers over the weekend. I could be wrong though...here's hoping for a Friday snowfest!
  4. Well I'm in the West of the Yorkshire region too but I measured 14 inches level snow from a 'streamer' off the North Sea in early December 2010 so keep the faith! All the time the cold is in situ the potential for unexpected snowfall remains.
  5. On the plus side, the latest GFS run shows a strengthening Easterly wind on Saturday which should blow some heavy snow showers right across our region as the low pulls away South and the colder uppers filter in.
  6. Maybe a few snow showers ahead of the front tomorrow night for the West of our region as per the latest NAE; It does however look like the front is further West than on the 12z though as suggested in the model thread so snow totals by the end of Friday look lower than projected earlier today at present. Still time for change though.
  7. I can't believe that the latest GFS says no to snow at all for Yorkshire since the uppers on the run stay below -5 from now all the way out until next Wednesday? Unless it is being suggested that the run is completely dry which doesn't look to be the case either? In fact Yorkshire looks to be in a prime position if you are a snow fan this weekend. I have my snow shovel at the ready anyway!
  8. It depends on your definition of zonality I suppose. I have not seen one low pressure move East of the UK and attack mainland Europe / Scandanavia before T144 on any output for ages now, and after that is very much FI in my opinion.
  9. Definitely a more East to West flow developing now. Lets see whether any of those showers in the North Sea develop further and start heading inland tonight. Fingers crossed! Looks like a line of showers due to hit land around the Humber soon. It might not amount to much but they do seem to be developing slightly.
  10. Where are you Adam? Temperature has been steady here at around 1.5c most of the evening. I can only think it must be a combination of cloud cover and wind that is holding the temperature up. We still have a little snowcover on the grass but other than that, there is not much to thaw!
  11. Sums up today's events quite nicely really! It just shows that even in one region of the UK - let alone the UK as a whole, local weather conditions can vary greatly. Fascinating stuff, and to think we have a whole week of this to come. The outlook doesn't look very snowy at the moment, but I would be surprised if we don't get some heavier snow showers moving off the North Sea midweek looking at the Easterly wind that is currently forecast to strengthen a little during the next 48 hours. We could also have a massive snow event at the weekend if things go in our favour. Exciting times.
  12. Fairly steady snow and finally settling on most surfaces except roads / paths etc. Looking at the radar maybe another hour or two of snow to come before the front fizzles away SE. Still looking for tomorrow though looking at the latest NAE just in;
  13. Been snowing lightly here for an hour or so but its really struggling to settle, even on the grass. It has recently gained a little intensity however, and the temperature is dropping very slightly, so maybe we will get a dusting, but its not looking good at the moment. Ah well...there is always tomorrow if tonight doesn't amount to anything much.
  14. I'm not sure whether the front will pep as it moves across Yorkshire at all but the METO text update suggests this may be the case; Headline: Very cold with snow and ice. This Evening and Tonight: Snow extending southeastwards across all areas this evening, tuning heavy for a time, giving local significant falls, especially in the higher areas, but snow turning light and dying away by morning. Staying very cold with widespread icy conditions. Minimum temperature -1 °C. Time will tell though, and to be honest, tomorrow's band was always forecast to be more active than tonight's anyway.
  15. I couldn't have put it better myself! I am quite astounded at the negativity on here. We have a week long cold spell to look forward to which given we were forecast to be in a mobile westerly by Tuesday only 2/3 days ago is a wonderful scenario (and rare) for the UK. I don't understand what people are after? We always get told 'get the cold in first and the snow will follow'. Yes some of us may get more than others and yes an unlucky few may get none at all, but given the present outlook (a very cold and somewhat unsettled theme) things don't really get much better than this for the UK in winter. A little perspective required methinks...
  16. METO text update sounds a little marginal for tomorrow now; Monday: Icy with snow cover early on before further rain, sleet and snow arrives from the west, persisting thereafter giving further snow accumulations. Staying cold. Maximum temperature 3 °C. Updated: 1530 on Sun 13 Jan 2013 But Amber Warning for Yorkshire says otherwise! Looking good until at least Friday for cold and snow now as well.
  17. Looking good then. I would certainly be happy with 2-4cms this evening. Wonderful cold and sunny crisp winter's day outside now. Temperature hovering around 1.4c. Lovely!
  18. I know this is for Church Fenton, North Yorkshire (just due East of Leeds) but it is quite representative of Yorkshire in general; http://wxweb.meteostar.com/sample/sample.shtml?text=EGXG And even this 'milder' 6z GFS run shows 850's and thicknesses that are supportive of snow up until Thursday for our region, so even if it does turn milder after this, we still have a four day cold / snowy spell to look forward to this week. Bring it on!
  19. Not sure what period you are talking about, but I can't see any evidence for the rain in West Yorkshire comment based on the latest output; It could be wrong but there is no support for your comment at the moment. METO text forecast also backs an 'all snow' event for Yorkshire.
  20. This is just my opinion, but unless a chart similar to that shows up on the majority of the T96 output this afternoon, I feel that chart is very unlikely to verify, and is likely to be a case of the GFS just 'going off on one'. Famous last words...
  21. Well it was good to finally see a little snow falling last night in my area for the first time this winter, and even though it only gave a small and temporary accumulation, it has certainly whetted my appetite for more snow during this coming week. So what do we have in store this week for our region this week? Well luckily enough I think alot of people will be pleased with the outlook! The latest radar; http://www.metoffice...ather/uk/radar/ shows an area of snow moving down from Scotland that will affect our region this evening and overnight as per the latest NAE prediction below; This area of snow will probably only produce relatively small accumulations for our region, but then we have a more active front moving down from the North/North West during tomorrow. There has been alot of talk as to whether this band of precipitation will be an all snow event, and whilst areas to the South and West of the Yorkshire region seem correct in raising their concerns, we seem to be in a prime position for an all snow event, again shown by the latest NAE prediction (see below) for the period in question, as well as the latest METO text forecast posted further down; Looking further out, and from Tuesday onwards, it looks as though it will remain cold, if not very cold, and with the wind expected to switch to the East/North East later in the week and to strengthen, it would appear that we could be in for some pretty severe coniditions with heavy snow showers being created by the North Sea snow machine, and then driven in land by the strong winds. The lates METO text update for our region illustrates this nicely; Headline: Very cold. Snow spreading from the northwest. Today: Most parts start dry with bright spells, but there will be a few snow showers at first. Staying very cold and clouding over through the day with snow moving into the north and west later. Icy at times. Maximum Temperature 3 °C. Tonight: Very cold with the snow in the far north and west at first soon spreading across the region. There will be some accumulations, and very icy conditions developing too. Minimum Temperature -1 °C. Monday: Cloudy and very cold, with snow probably spreading from the north during the day, giving further accumulations in places. Maximum Temperature 2 °C. Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday: Tuesday, very cold, bright or sunny intervals and snow showers, some possibly heavy near coasts. Wednesday and Thursday, very cold with a biting northeasterly wind and heavy snow showers. Issued at: 0400 on Sun 13 Jan 2013 Towards the weekend, there is more uncertainty, but with the models continuing their trend this morning to push any end to this cold spell backwards, I can only think that the likelihood of this cold spell being extended into the following week, with a continuing risk of snow is becoming greater all the time, particularly as we have an ongoing SSW which is clearly playing havoc with the jet stream and the models are really struggling to come to terms with how this will pan out. In a nutshell, if you live in Yorkshire / Lincs, and you like cold and snow, you should be in for a real treat this week! Wrap up warm folks...
  22. Well if nothing else, I for one am looking forward to this output at T96; It should feel quite 'bracing' out and about on Wednesday if these charts come to pass.
