  1. Can someone please enlighten me as to why, when we have SSW and a -NAO, we still get marginal snow events, which means likely rain/sleet? If we can't get snow when these systems are in place, when can we? Also it puzzles me that although we are on the gulf stream, the seas around us tend to get the snow, whereas the UK itself gets rain. Surely the waters around us are even warmer than the island, so why do they get snow and we get rain. They are in the gulf stream too!!

The effects of the SSW have yet to be felt at ground level apparently, plus this cold spell is only just getting started therefore we don't, as yet, have a deeply entrenched pool of cold air above us.

  2. Wouldn't get too downbeat if I were you yet Bish, the BBC/Met forecast a max of 4-5c here on Friday and it didn't get above 3c all day.

Also the UKMO 00z run shows a max of 2c by lunchtime

Very true. Also, marginal events can of course produce those lovely 50 pence-sized snowflakes!

  3. Current radar suggests first band looks very mediocre.

I believe it's expected to pep up somewhat as it heads further south. However, neither event is anticipated to be a raging blizzard.

The BBC News 24 forecast earlier had the central swathe of the Midlands under snow between 6.00pm tonight until an hour or so after midnight :)

  4. My feeling is that it will snow tomorrow night but we washed away by rain on Monday in West Midlands.

That may well be how it pans out for us in the west of the region, although don't forget just because it starts out as rain on Monday doesn't mean that it can't turn to snow soon afterwards :)

Also, the latest 18Z charts look like prolonging the cold spell through to next weekend and maybe even beyond, so potentially plenty more opportunities in the days ahead good.gif

  5. NAE does look more promising for the East Midlands. The Peak District could get a good dumping between 6pm Sun and 6pm Mon. Add to that the snowcover will probably not melt anywhere next week and the chance of further falls as disturbances run through the cold air, by next weekend there could be some seriously deep snow up there.

Walking in the Peak District anytime after tomorrow could be very interesting indeed.

I think you'll be in a prime position, Supacell. You're further North and East than most of us on here, plus you've got elevation on your side as well :)

  6. It's looking precariously close for those of us in the Solihull/Coventry area, but I think we should just about be okay. Most of the charts I've seen today have us just inside the the snow line.

East Midlands looking good for a snowfest. Good luck everyone! good.gif

  7. Wow, really big flakes coming down all of a sudden. YAY!

Just a reminder that you can put your location as your signature, which helps everyone keep track of where people are reporting snow (or lack of) from smile.png

    Good thinking Batman!
