  1. Considering where the MetO have issued weather warnings for i am surprised where estofex have put the area of most extreme weather, almost the exact opposite.
  2. Yes, i was. i have seen hurricane force winds referred to in this thread so was asking if this is actually the case. i hope the models stay as they are I love a good storm (as long as everybody is safe!).
  3. Oh i love a bit of extreme weather. The current models (that i understand - not many!) look like it will be a beast. My rain guage always blows over in strong winds though Are we looking at hurricane force winds?
  4. When i was growing up we were never allowed the heating on until after my birthday (24th october) and even after that they would put it on reluctantly. i applied the same rule in my own house It comes on at 5am until 9am then goes back on at 4pm unil 1am. We often end up putting it on continuous. I never understand why people say to go put a jacket on if you're cold. Putting a cardigan on is fine, but you shouldn't have to sit in your own house in winter gear just to be warm.
  5. Thanks for that. So the subtropical ridge acts like a barrier making the storm have to go round the edge of it (the edge being the East coast). In that case, what exactly is the subtroipical ridge?
  6. Why exactly do they follow the similar path that they do? I know how and why hurricanes form but i don't know why they follow a certain path. I've had this explained to me before, but to be honest the language was bit complicated  . I know they will start in warm waters as that is what they need to form, but why do they almost always track inland and then up the East coast or slightly inland? Why not inland and down the Brazilian coast for example? If you could explain it laymans terms that would be appreciated
  7. I don't know if this counts as a swarm but look at the activity around the Virgin islands on the 20th! http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_all.html
  8. What's summer like? How hot does it get and does it have similar seasons to the UK?
  9. I love the old weather graphics. I used to get very excited when i saw the lightning one.
  10. It was reading 1C (although now up to 9C) this morning. had to use the ice scraper on my windscreen for the first time this winter.
  11. Going on absolutely nothing but guessing and gut feeling I think winter for the SE will look like this: The relatively mild weather will continue until early December. This will be followed by a rapid cool down. We shall see a relatively large amount of precipitation in the early part of December, this will be rain. There will then be a slight warm up in temperature followed by some snowfall around the 20th December onwards. This will leave only a couple of inches with the occasional flurry to top it up, but it shall melt again before Xmas. Xmas will be bitterly cold but conditions won't be right for snow. However by early January the snow will fall thick and fast and we shall see similar conditions to last year, but it will not be as deep. Snow will be on the ground and topped up by regular showers until at least mid January. Heavy rain showers will melt the snow quickly and by 21st January it will all be melted. We shall see a few flurries up until the end of January, but these will barely lay. February will be more mild with the normal amount of rainfall we would expect for the month. From that point the warm up to Spring starts.
  12. I went to uni with a big European Storm Chaser and he would always go to the North of the Pyrenees and then up through Massife-Central. It helped that he had a house in MC though!
  13. I think we will all forever be frustrated and hopelessly let down by wheelie bin day. I can't tell you the amount of times I've gotten my hopes up only to realise what day it is.
  14. If I see one more OMGZ EVERYBODY PANIC!!!111!!! headline from the Express I may stab myself through the face with the nearest sharp object. Everybody keeps saying 'ooooh I read in the paper it's going to snow this week'. Yes dear, they say that every week.
  15. Something's not quite right, the biggest gust recorded here has been 10mph in the last 24hours. Definately wrong.
  16. I was a bit too young to remeber it but I've seen pictures of our garden that summer and despite my parent's best watering efforts it was all yellow!
  17. Very windy overnight, so much so our very heavy outside bin has been thrown to the other side of the garden :o
  18. Very windy last night, could have sworn it rained lot's as well, but the rain gauge this morning only say 0.5 mm
  19. which date/month is the latest that your location has ever received? May (not sure which year, the earley 2000's I believe) which date/month on average has the last snowfall? End of January/beginning of February, can't say an exact month. which date/month is the earliest that your location has ever received? End of October (late 90's) which date/month on average has the first snowfall? December which month is the snowiest when it comes to snow lying? January which month is the snowiest when it comes to snow falling? January which month is your snowiest (lying and falling, and depth) in your records? 26 inches December 2010/January 1992
  20. What's it like living over there? Why did you move there, if you don't mind me asking?
  21. Thanks for those Coast, that's interesting. The rain guage I have has made me much more aware of how much or little it really does rain. It's surprising how innacurate our memory is when it comes to that sort of thing. One of my neighbours was saying how much it had rained in October, when in fact my rainguage had only totalled about 4mm for the whole month. Looking at those CPC charts it talks about there being a thick and thin line for accumulated and normal, but they both look the same thickness to me
  22. Thanks for your answers. So as i understand it, the fog is formed by the warmer air mositure cooling . Usually the sun and wind would break through this in the morning, but due to a lack of sun and wind, it remains.
  23. I know why fog forms, but what's the reason for it lingering pretty much all day for the last week or so?
  24. Ok so a few flashes and rumbles don't count then. We had about 5 minutes of intense thundersnow last year, but i'm not sure I'd couint that as a storm.
