  1. Not Good in my eyes. Been bad enough here with the recent heavy rain and local floods, and now we have possible snow and ice to contend with which is even more disruptive and dangerous then rain. Ideally i'd rather we just had some more crisp but dryer and sunny days at the moment as its just been miserable weather recently.
  2. 4 pictures I took of some quite large mid level clouds this morning at Brongest. Altocumulus are not normally as thick as that so it was interesting to see.
  3. Weather station in the garden got a max gust of 27mph and my handheld up a local large hill had 40mph on Tuesday. We have had winds of that strength on normal windy days without warnings so we must be sheltered from Westerly winds I think.
  4. Its funny because the highest I got that day was a gust of 40mph, and that was up a large hill in Wales! Must be sheltered from Westerly winds here at Brongest I guess.
  5. Will probably get higher wind readings up the local hill with this low compared to the last as the highest winds are going to be occurring during the day. I got a gust of 36mph on Thursday and only 29mph Friday, and there were some branches off of an ash tree that is up there on the side of the road.
  6. We had a bit more lightning here on Thursday night along with probably the most heaviest rain I have ever seen. I could tell something was up that night as there was faint heat lightning going on at 10:00 to 12:00PM. And then later some brighter fairly close sheet lightning occurred with distant rumbles. There was a lull in the lightning but then a massive downpour happened and by the end of it there was a very large and deep puddle of water outside our back door which thankfully slowly seeped down our soak away to the bottom of the garden. And as the rain moved away an intra-cloud strike occurred as the light was on in the kitchen which I saw light up the ground outside the window above the house which produced a closer rumble of thunder. Then there were a few more distant strikes around the area with distant rumbles until the lightning and heavy rain moved away leaving the winds to arrive and normal showers.
  7. It was a decent week for us taking into account the forecast and warnings though I still think it could have been better for the country as a whole. The first bit of storms happened in the morning of last Monday where it was very cloudy but there was some rumbles of thunder that got closer from the north. I wen't inside to say to my parents that there was thunder, and then was looking out one of the front upstairs windows with them closed. Then I saw a faint flash in the sky, but 3 to 4 seconds later there was a loud thunder clap which surprised me and caused my heart rate to rise quite high as that meant it was under a mile away '(Later found out by neighbours who saw it that it hit the ground so could have been a positive cloud to ground strike).' I wen't downstairs to say how close it was and my parents were also surprised at it, they said the electric wen't out for a few seconds as the strike happened. Then there were a few more fairly close strikes before it cleared up, and we then wen't outside to have a look around and could hear really deep rumbles of thunder in the distance to our southeast. There was just rain and distant thunder for a bit, until the afternoon where another load of lightning came in. It was mostly cloud-cloud and intra-cloud, until I heard powerful deep rumbling thunder. I wen't in the landing to look out the window, and could see cloud to ground strikes in the distance to the NorthEast. Then I wen't downstairs to wait it out, and there were a few fairly close but not too loud strikes along with heavy rain until the thundery weather moved away and it brightened up into the late afternoon and evening. There was nothing then on Tuesday until Wednesday came along, where most of the morning and early afternoon was thunder less, but me and my parents could tell that the sky looked unstable with loads of unstable AltoCumulus clouds and some Cumulus ones. Here are a load of pictures I took of some storm clouds that then formed to our north on the late afternoon of last Wednesday. This was the last proper day of thunder that we had here, and there was a bit more around us and in the distance that formed later that evening and into the night that produced some nice displays. One or two storms in particular in the distance to the South and SouthWest were producing a lightning strike rate of 20 to 30 strikes in just 30 seconds! There was some nice intra cloud lightning a long way in the distance then from the South to the West, which got closer as the night went on, but it started to die down in intensity. It got to a certain distance then quite quickly completely died out, and I have to say that my heart sank when this happened around 2:00am to 3:00am that night. That was it then for the rest of the early hours, I stayed up for an hour or two just to be cautious, but nothing was happening so I made the decision to go to bed. We also had some late evening storms sometime in June or July I think that produced some lightning and thunder which was closer but wasn't as frequent, and I wasn't able to report it, as well as some distant loud rumbles of thunder to our Northwest that wasn't forecast or reported by anyone on here a few weeks ago back in July.

  10. There were a line of storm clouds to our South and Southeast in the distance sometime in early May with a load of rumbles of thunder but I wasn't able to report it on the day. We are in Brongest so i'm not sure if you were under the storms that we saw in the distance.
  11. I wasn't able to mention at the time but back early in May this year there were a line of cumulonimbus clouds that formed in a line to the south and southeast of here during the hot sunny afternoon. I was pleasantly surprised as I didn't think we would get homegrown storms in Wales like we got in the southwest and south of England. I wen't up the road with my mum looking at the clouds and hearing a load of rumbles of thunder for at least half an hour, and my mother said that she saw a bolt of lightning in the distance. I don't know what us in west Wales will get from this thundery forecast for next week but it will be interesting to see.

  13. I tend to find that that model over does the wind speeds to quite a large amount most of the time.
  14. Had some snow falling here from a shower as well, although none of it settled. Quite windy as well with two 22mph gusts which is high considering the station is around only 6ft off of the ground in the garden.
  15. I agree although 40mph gusts to me are still the beginning threshold of a yellow warning. If the max gusts were only 30mph then I agree that a yellow warning wouldn't be warranted as the only thing that would come down in that are dead or rotten branches or trees.
  16. Yeah, my mum and dad heard two rumbles of thunder in the house while I was having lunch in the kitchen with my headphones on. Is there suppose to be lightning around our area today? I didn't think there was suppose to be any.
  17. Looks like a very exposed coastal area so not surprised.
  18. Looks like around 30-50mph inland and 40-60mph coastal to me from what I have seen. And when I say coastal I mean on the shore or general hills and not very high tower sites or isolated steep hills which funnel and unusually speed up the wind-flow.
  19. I got a gust of 33.9mph just up the road about an hour or so ago and I imagine it will be around 40mph up the local hills. I can't see 60mph gusts inland this evening here in west Wales, maybe 50mph absolute max, as we had 40-50mph up the hill yesterday and that was suppose to be the peak of the storm unless i'm missing something.
  20. Well the Met Office got it right for us again yesterday as I got two 47mph gusts and one 49mph gust up the hill before I had to get back as my finger tips were getting very cold. They were the only ones mentioning peak gusts of around 50mph wears others had 60mph or even 70mph which was way to high. Rain-wise, again the Met Office got it the closest with predictions anywhere from 15mm to 45mm in 24hrs for lower levels and we got 25mm or around 1inch.
  21. Well latest Met Office video update mentioning max 50mph inland gusts, so clearly all the forecasts and models are not agreeing again just like last week. Some models this morning are showing much higher winds but they tend to overdo the winds compared to other models. But maybe this time will be different, if we have either incredibly good luck or bad luck depending on how you see it.
  22. I wouldn't pay much attention to that model as it almost always over does the wind speeds. In fact it would be the first time it got it right if it turned out to be correct since I have seen it predicting the winds on this site.
  23. I think the worst thing about this system is the amount of rain that might fall, which will be both worrying in case of widespread flooding but also unpleasant when trying to measure and witness the winds. I was thinking of going up the local hill tomorrow afternoon to measure the winds but the latest models are only showing 40-50mph gusts which is what I always often record in most storms, whereas a few days ago it seemed more worth going up there and recording as there were forecast 60mph or even 70mph inland gusts. If the models only show 40mph or 50mph gusts tomorrow morning then I don't think i'll bother going out up the hill for the amount of unpleasant soaking i'll probably get, and thats even with waterproofs on!
  24. I don't think it was anywhere near as bad as 2007 as that storm had much of the country experiencing 60-70mph gusts whereas this one only had the usual 40-50mph gusts, at least here at Brongest anyway. I think the intense bursts of rain was more noticeable in this recent storm then the wind.
  25. Did you measure that with your own anemometer though or just based on what the forecast told you or local station observations?
