London & The South East Regional Discussion - Part 6

I'm 35 and have always loved watching snow float down in front of lamposts - or swirl around loads when its blizzards! I lived on Boxhill in 87 and think I remember that snow, we had drifts everywhere and missed loads of school because the coach that took us down to Dorking couldn't get up or down Boxhill - aahhh those were the days! -
One thing I don't understand about PPN charts - it measures in mm - so millimeters? So 10mm is only 1cm?! Could somekne explain, confused?! Also, as someone else said, seems like we should be getting more snow for 12hrs worth of snowing? Or is that because its only predicted to be falling as light snow (meto always only said light snow for Epsom anyway!)?? Thanks H.

I too noticed a bit of "SE hating" on the Mod thread - sorry but is it bot quite rightly our turn for this winter?! Northern and Western areas have had a go this winter - its not like its been all us and now we're getting even more?! Think I'll stay in the regional and check what Meto/BBC r updating! H x

Well Sat has Surrey slap bang in between the yellow warning coming in from the west and the showers coming in from the east that day! But Sunday is well and truly in "the zone" - only warns of 10cm max tho so not exactly deepest depths but a nice manageable covering for a pretty walk and snowman building fun with the kidlets! Still have this uncertain feeling that we'll either get it a lot lighter, few cm's or it'll go the other way and be DEEEEP! Who knows - but glad its due overnight, love that feeling on waking when u throw open the curtains to check the outcome! H.

Hi all, liking being back on the Regional! I have followed the Model Output thread since last October looking for winter snow! I googled it and found this site, complete novice, have learnt a lot but still far from knowledgeable! Anyway, I have waited for weeks n weeks to see this easterly form, seen it nearly arrive, seen it disappear again etc.... So on getting it I was so pleased us poor snow-deprived south-easterners mite actually get OUR TURN..... Only to learn it was a DRY easterly - wtf?! Aagghh! Oh well, guess that's the weather for u! Seen odd flutterings here in Epsom but really want that proper settled white look! Does anyone really reckon our chances for that this weekend as is being a possible forecast?! H x

Thanku so much for that summary weathermaster - as a newbie I could sense things were better but couldn't understand exactly why! So basically we're now just hoping for the GFS to come on board in the 18z? H. -

Thank you to all who replied to me - kinda gettin it?! Sometimes I curse the day I found this forum - as much as its interesting its soooooo frustrating too! Sometimes wish I cud go back to the simpler days of the 5day forecast on BBC Text! But unfortunately I've tried the drug now and am a little hooked, dammit! H. -

I feel totally the same - I'm a complete newbie who first found this forum in Oct and had to decifer all the techy stuff to get even a vague idea on forecasting.....but I have never been so confused as I am now! I've never seen such neg/pos posts all in one go in such a short space of time! I feel my little fix I look for on here each day is completely incomprehensible! PLEASE somebody explain! Thanx H. -

Winter 2011/12 - General Discussion
weathergeek replied to Paul's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
I am a complete and utter novice so this question is purely just a ponder than a statement but if the weather were to change to "winter" in late winter/early spring, could this be due to our exceptionally mild Nov/early Dec - so like everything was shunted back a few mths? I remember this kind of scenario being mentioned back in Nov, which is also when there were forecasts saying we'd see more of winter in late Jan/Feb - and I wouldn't be surprised if the pattern changed to cold and stayed that way until into March? Would anyone else think this possible? Thanks, H. -

Think I've kinda accepted now that Christmas will be mild and snowless....in way, with no excitement in model output it means I can spend less time on here, getting excited by ramping and more time actually getting into Christmas itself, lol! With 2 young kids, that's exciting enough for me! Then when all the festivities are over, I'll be back on here looking for patterns of change.....BIG change! Know I'll prob still pop in each day, just to check, but won't be watching latest runs/refreshing MO site over and over gagging to see two little white pixels on the bottom of a grey cloud, lol! Merry (green) Christmas to all my fellow people down saaarff! H x -

Thanks Higrade - I do read the Strat threat as far as my tech knowledge takes me - ie, warm strat = more chance of big snow event and cold strat = a lot less chance! That really is about as far as I geddit but for now its lookin ok! So I guess its all eyes on models for Xmas output now....or should I save myself the stress and just check forecast on Thurs/Fri....can I do it? Probably not dammit! Lol! H. -

Ok so now we've had our little bit of snow fun, I'm now lookin to xmas forecast and signs of ssw's and other crazy synoptics for a whitewash Jan/Feb - which, from reading on here (and certainly no novice forecast of my own!) is what I've been expecting all along?! Any ideas anyone?! H. -
In the half hr I've been up, we've gone from v wet sleet to lovely snow settling on cars and bits of rooftops! Don't expect it to last but still lovely to see some falling when I didn't expect anything this side of Xmas! Also seems v fitting for my daughters Nativity today! Secretly hoping it will last long enough until temp drops low enough to freeze it into position - but dont expect it! I'm half way between Heathrow and Charlwood Meto stations, Heathrow says nowt but sleet (already wrong!) and Leatherhead (Charlwood) says heavy snow at 9am and light snow at midday so hoping for that one! H.
-
Ok, I admit it, I have gone a bit loopy with all this.... too many high expectations then disappointments, then excitement again - and as everyone says (and I know fully well myself!) weather is what it is and a very changable!!! And I know this, after years of watching for hot summer days and snowy winter days..... so why do I do it to myself - why not just log on tonight and know that the forecast then will prob be the most likely one rather than winding myself up for days in advance??!! But that's curiosity for you I guess and being interested in what models are showing and how weather works etc.... we must all be like it or we wouldn't all be members of this forum??!! H.
-
Both Met and BBC (tho pretty much the same!) all have a sleet/snow/sleet combo for us this Fri am! Transient yes, but as Meto vid pointed out this can cause the most disruption as its sudden and fast and leaving freezing temps after to just ice it all up! If forecast comes off I'll be sad I won't see the look on my sons face as he'll be at school when it starts - he's only young but remembers snow last yr and associates it with Xmas - so he's been wondering where it is! As has Mummy, lol! H.
