  1. The Express do take it a little bit further though, it must be said. Their 'reporting' is entirely laughable! Anyway, it does look like we're in for some action in the UK as Leslie makes her way across (dragging Michael with her) - mostly Highlands and Eilean Siar but I'm sure it'll get a bit wet and windy as a result further south - the question is to what extent? Katia didn't do a lot around Chester last year by way of comparison, but we are well-shielded which means it is likely that we'll see it get a bit breezy with some drizzle .
  2. For Birchwood (nearest weather station is Golborne, Wigan): Temp 15.7 C Dew Point 11 C Pressure 1018.8 hPa Wind breezy at 1km/h, gusting 11km/h (Though it does seem stronger than that) Rainfall so far today 21mm (mostly between approx 5am and 9am) A convective start to the day with Cb clouds still coming off the Irish Sea at 800m, though rainfall has eased here after very heavy showers earlier (with some sferics). Sunny spells increasing.
  3. A lot of rain arond Chester and Warrington this morning, and the ATD is showing a couple of sferics from nearly an hour ago - certainly were some Cbs floating around on the drive into work (and some very wet roads). As for last night who caught the squall line that passed through western areas in the evening? Passed my house teeming with rain and wind accompanying, then went on to finish off any chance of a result in the T20 at Old Trafford!
  4. It's not too surprising for me that the strikes are orientated SW-NE along prevailing steering winds with the greatest concentration in the east, due mainly in my opinion to land track - the greater the time over land the stronger the storm. It's interesting to see that within that there have been particular locations that have been good at generating storms, the likes of Newport, Brecon Beacons, Waterford, The Pennines, Birmingham, the outer Dee/Mersey estuaries and others. The Beacons/Southeast Wales have been particularly good, including of course on June 28th.
  5. Goodness me that is low! Many thanks for the information.
  6. Just a quick note on the ex-tropical storm potentially arriving next Friday - I am racking my brains to think of a lower pressure reading that I have seen before and I cannot remember one, it looks like this one could come in around the 960mb mark according to GFS. Is this correct and if so is it one of the most intense depressions we have ever (potentially) seen over the UK? Thanks.
  7. Probably some turbulence too, unless they can fly a fair way around it. Here's hoping it doesn't cause much damage for locals' and holidaymakers' sakes.
  8. I don't think I've ever heard of or seen a storm like that across the Mediterranean - it certainly is a bit worrying in that it is a static system that is forecast to intensify and become more akin to something usually found in the Gulf of Mexico. I admit I have not paid attention to the weather in that area in a detailed scientific way before, but it still appears to be very unusual to me. As for here - the post-frontal weather today has included very warm sunny spells and some large towering cumulus clouds are passing my house as I type. I certainly wouldn't rule out a storm just looking outside, though I know it appears unlikely from the models and in a high pressure environment.
  9. Does anyone have a strike map for the whole of yesterday's action? I was so pleased to see an hour-long storm and will be content for this year if nothing else happens here. A storm at home would ice the cake, but I'm happy with what came yesterday. As for today I'm not expecting much, though we've had a fair bit of sun this morning and had a sharp 5 minute downpour an hour or so ago - if the sun shines this aft maybe we'll get something later.
  10. At least it's drizzling in Lincolnshire...still going here. I hope you get something later, there is still a chance. Otherwise tomorrow has potential.
  11. A second wave of sferics is coming through here, safe to say we're getting an absolute pasting. Been going on for half an hour, I so deserve this!
  12. Several flashes per minute and loud overhead thunder here in Birchwood, can't see loads from my window but saw a couple of cloud to cloud bolts clearly. Still going.
  13. Powercut at work 5 minutes ago and it's starting to rain with the sky darkening rapidly. This could be it for me.
  14. Result for you! Looks like I could be about to get something in Birchwood, the sferic gap between Merseyside and mid Wales is being filled.
  15. It was horrendous driving into work on the M56/M6 this morning - heavy rain, spray, a great deal of standing water and then wind/horizontal rain over the Thelwall Viaduct. That was clearly the front, which to me seemed to exhibit something of a LEWP as it passed through western and central areas this morning. Now to what's going on in SW/mid Wales, I like the look of that a lot!
  16. My workplace is in the moderate zone and my home not too far from it, excellent .
  17. I checked the Met Office earlier and their map for NW England/West Midlands/NE Wales area was showing thunder symbols widely for tomorrow, added to their yellow warning and tasty looking precipitation map. August usually delivers something if any month will, so let's have it! On another note (a repost from the NSC) does anyone remember August 2005 storm-wise? I was in Sunderland at my parents' shop then and saw the most ferocious UK storm I have ever seen. I looked outside at some time after 5pm and was astonished to see a pitch black sky with the street lights on - then from the first flash there were strikes every 1-2 seconds for something between half an hour and an hour with torrential rain seriously flooding the adjacent roundabout (and nearly the shop). The sky was being continuously lit up. The next morning we discovered that 100,000 homes in the area (possibly a broader one than just Sunderland) had been without power and there were fires, which was no surprise as strikes were regularly hitting buildings. I posted the latter as if anyone does recall the event I'd love to know its nature and what caused it. To save cluttering up this thread feel free to message me if you wish to. Having searched around a little I found the following link describing a "supercell" on 31st August 2005 - though I'm not entirely sure which date my storm was on this could very potentially have been it (I do remember hearing of the Metro line being struck): http://www.neforum2....d762b2f9-2.html
  18. Nothing tonight but little was expected. I just thought I would share a video I just watched of a phenomenal night time storm over Florida, viewed from a plane - I have seen many videos of lightning, but nothing like this:
  19. I'm quite surprised to see a level 1 covering here from Estofex though it has been pretty gusty this morning - wouldn't say anything particularly damaging but the winds are strong. Little in the way of rain. There is a line of sharp showers at the rear of the frontal cloud that looks quite interesting - over Northern Ireland and moving ENE, but I'm not expecting much in terms of storms. That said, with CAPE and a trough passing over the Irish Sea tonight is something actually possible tonight? Wednesday is looking interesting, GFS currently modelling a fair amount of CAPE with accompanying LI values as the next low moves through with an occluded front and a couple of troughs.
  20. Still here, it's been quite amazing how everything has either started just after passing here, skimmed east or west or simply failed to have the legs to make it here when coming from the south. All the while I have seen countless CBs,TCus and other storm-related clouds around so we've definitely been generating things around here. I know good storms are possible in Chester, having had an evening cracker in 2007 (frequent CG lightning, house-shaking thunder) and a good one (torrential rain, multiple strikes and thunder lasting 30 mins or so) last autumn, but not this year so far. In fact the one that did happen here a couple of weeks ago I missed as I was in Stevenage, which had nothing then but probably a rash of storms yesterday! On another note does anyone remember August 2005 storm-wise? I was in Sunderland at my parents' shop then and saw the most ferocious UK storm I have ever seen. I looked outside at 5pm and was astonished to see a pitch black sky with the street lights on - then from the first flash there were strikes every 1-2 seconds for something between half an hour and an hour with rain seriously flooding the adjacent roundabout (and nearly the shop). The sky was being continuously lit up. The next morning we discovered that over 100,000 people in the city had been without power and there were fires, which was no surprise as strikes were regularly hitting buildings.
  21. Our first action of any kind - a short but intense downpour just now following an evening of gusty winds. It must have been quite some day in Cambridgeshire and the East Midlands in particular from the map Paul posted, to say the least!
  22. What an amazing day, such a rash of storms - still close to 3000 strikes in the last hour or so. Disappointed to miss out, but glad so many storm lovers got to see a real show today. Amazing.
