  1. IMO December is the best month for cold weather 2010 was a perfect example of that, once we move into January & February the days are getting longer and the sun is getting higher, with the exception of February (first half) this year and 2010 recent February's have often felt spring like at times

its only psychological that the days are getting longer in January, technically sunset is still before 5pm for the whole month, i agree once we get to mid February the days are much longer, and i'd rather have snow before mid feb but i will still take it after mid feb, but to say snow in january is not good because of the "stronger sun" is total tosh, but you are a mild ramper of course so no shocks there
  2. the GFS 12z gave most temps of 1c on xmas eve and xmas day, now the 18z gives us an ugly mild fest with them days being 11c, am i surprised ? not in the slightest, i bet it dosen't even rain it will just be a typical partly cloudy mild xmas day

    meh

  3. i don't expect the atlantic to barrel through totally, what might happen is the usual NW/SE split courtesy of a pressure rise to the south, the usual plain old bog standard synoptics zzzzzzzz

next weekend could be milder than the Queens jubilee celebrations, lets see if the mild downgrades, i doubt it

shocking hideous output this morning but not surprised i thought there would be a pressure rise from the south a week ago

  4. there have been many non snow events here over the last 15 years but i did strike lucky in 2010 when that front from the south stalled over bedford and gave me 8 inches, i was due some luck, now i will probably have to wait another 15 years for a pasting again

jan 2004 was a good thundersnow event but it soon passed over me i only got about 2 or 3 inches from that, and there have been a few other times where i have got 2 or 3 inches but its rare for me to get more than that, many times i was also expecting snow and all i got was a mere dusting, but of course im not the only one who loses out, though my location is not very good for snow, luton 20 miles away does far better because its a lot higher up

  5. Il tell you what really annoys me is Tv weather men/women thinking everyone hates cold weather. " Your be glad to hear this is the last of the cold frosty mornings" i just heard the presenter on BBC breakfast say, Really left trouser leges me off when people moan about cold, when in reality even this cold is very mild compared to other places this far north as the Uk. Posted Image .

yeah it annoys me too, esp when they have a big smile on there face when they say mild weather is on the way, but tv forecasts are for joe public and most hate cold and snow or not like it as much as us weather freaks

and what do we have showing in the models for next week, yep the azores high ridging in, a very common synoptic pattern, even zonal gets downgraded sometimes, i bet it won't rain that much in the east next week, even though the charts show rain crossing the UK, GFS FI cranks up the vortex but i bet pressure stays high over the south of the UK, a truly dreadful but familiar pattern, what a borefest

of course not 100% guaranteed to come off like currently progged but the models don't get this pattern wrong that often

are we still in a "better position compared to this time last year" as people keep saying ?

  7. when people say its only december 12th, that shouldn't mean we have until feb 28th to salvage our winter, i would like winter to be spread out over three months if possible and even if we got a decent two week cold spell in feb and the rest of this winter was mild with no snow people would still say it was a crap winter,

last year it was very cold here in early feb but overall winter was still a big let down according to most

  8. one weather type that is not mentioned on here much and that is Fog, i love Fog, but sadly that is rare here too apart from early mornings before it disappears at about 9am, but before i used to see fog last most of the day, then it would come back late afternoon in winter, i get far too many bland cloudy days and tbh a lot are not even that dull, its just that annoying bright cloudy crap, i like clear blue skies, but not cloudyish brightness, i actually prefer dull days over bright cloudy days with the odd bit of sun

  9. here we go again, chasing snow and good synoptics at T180 + who knows we might be third time lucky, i think i need to recharge the batteries

no doubt when/if we do get snow falling i will probably be asleep during it due to exhaustion of chasing it in the models and typically miss it, or it will snow when im at work

  10. i wish joe public realized how lucky they are, that more often than not this country ends up avoiding heavy snow when its forecast in these models, which usually downgrades, so instead of whining on if there is 2 inches of snow which happens once or twice a year and causes them "big problems" on their journey to work, they should be told that the snow is not going to happen, and realize that they got lucky, imagine snow was as common as rain how would they cope then ?

  11. Uh.. this is the post I am referring to.

Eh, whats good about zonal? which is what the models are showing for next week, its windy with south westerly winds, big wow, and we have lost the good synoptics for this island that were showing a few days ago, i don't care if a scandi high or a greenland high is lurking and there is potential for it to do something, its what happens on this island that ultimately matters

  12. So by your very own definition on the other thread, you're not a weather enthusiast!

i do like thunderstorms, torrential downpours, heatwaves and snow of course, but zonal does nothing for me, its far too common and i get bored of it, i may not always get gales or severe gales here but they don't interest me at all, so if i see a big depression, deep low in the models i won't exactly be getting excited

  13. it actually causes less stress to me in a way, because i don't view the models all the time when its zonal, right now i am on here viewing the charts all the time and i am already tired of chasing 2 failed cold, snowy spells, so a break from the charts will do me good

it might only be the weather but i still get miserable, people say to me do other things, but you can do other things at any time of the year, eg go out with family, friends, go to the pub etc, snow comes around very occasionally and we need to take our chances with it, so when its missed i get down, but i get over it

  14. what are the odds on the next couple of weeks being milder than some days we had in june this year ? like the queens jubilee when it was cold and wet with temps of 8c

a shocking turnaround in the models, even though i wasn't totally taken in by the charts, at the back of my mind i had some hope we would see a decent cold spell, i was wrongly shot down in the model thread yesterday for saying it has all downgraded, im afraid in life more often than not things don't go right and i will never be a member of the blind faith brigade, and i will usually be realistic/negative

i don't expect the atlantic to barrel through totally, what might happen is the usual NW/SE split courtesy of a pressure rise to the south, the usual plain old bog standard synoptics zzzzzzzz

who knows though, i have about 10% faith that things might turn for the better, as i said im mostly a half glass empty kind of bloke but at the back of my mind i always have faint hope on something decent coming, otherwise i wouldn't be on here watching these charts all the bloody time

  15. I'm moaning aren't I? So I'm posting in exactly the right place. Also I think your holier than thou attitude is very rude. I love weather but I'm not so unstable that I throw tantrums and get depressed about it. And you should read the strat thread, maybe you'd gain some actual meteorological knowledge.

I know there is but thank you for not encouraging them!

no my attitude is realism and not blind faith, but sadly realism sounds like negativity to people like you, people can moan on here as much as they like, stay away if your fed up of it, and i do read the strat threads, maybe we need a shortwave thread as that is the killer of snow for us and it don't matter if we have all the blocking in the world
  16. err this is the moaning thread, your attitude on here is very rude tbh, Jbuffet

the real passionate weather fanatics get down when good synoptics go wrong, people like you probably aren't into the weather that much so you just accept it and say "ah well never mind" when things downgrade and blindly believe that something good is going to happen further down the line without seeing any evidence bar comments on the strat thread

  17. As Snowy Easterlies said in the MOD thread earlier is there anybody else who would now actually prefer if the Models now fully firmed up on a mild zonal pattern with no end in site? Personally I would, it'd certainly beat the alternative of being lead up the garden path for the umpteenth time anyway.

yep my feet are freezing right now and they will stay freezing till about next thursday, if we had snow i would be happier and i wouldn't care that i was cold, dry cold weather does nothing for me, its nice to look at if there is a frost, but you go out on the street and walk in it, its not nice at all. its even worse if its grey and cold its tedious, walking in a blizzard is far better and takes your mind of feeling cold cos you are happy about the snow lol

so yes if there is no snow on the way i will welcome a return to mild zonal, at least i will feel less cold and don't have to use as much heating

people make out that frost and cold in december is a rarity when its not al all, its not literally mild and zonal all winter you know. so sorry if i don't get excited about a few cold days and temps of -3c at night, its snow that most on here look for as that is rare as hens teeth, but more often than not we will be disappointed chasing snow sadly, but its hard to refrain from getting our hopes up when we see the models show good snowy synoptics
