  1. dont know if this has been posted or not Fréttastofa RÚV â€@RUVfrettir 6h #Bardarbunga Large crustal movements detected in relation to magma intrusion. http://www.ruv.is/frett/met-office-25-km-long-dyke-formed …
  2. this was just posted on twitter an ash discharge from UBINAS in Chile from today https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTM1G_m2ZzI
  3. Gisli Olafsson â€@gislio 11m It is now 3.3M according to @Vedurstofan - still 4.7M and 4.8M by @LastQuake and @USGS respectively
  4. Gisli Olafsson â€@gislio 32m A 4.6M quake being reported under #Bardarbunga. #ashta Gisli Olafsson â€@gislio 30m IMO (@vedurstofan) showing it smaller (as 2.9)…time to wait for scientists to report on it #Bardarbunga
  5. bardarbunga eruption checker currently its no but if that changes to I think YA then its erupting http://www.ereldgos.is/
  6. its all to do with its output even though it is constantly erupting its eruptions tend to be smaller in size so doesn't grow the island at a huge rate plus in overall timescale 2000 years of eruptions isn't that long in volcanic timescale another couple of hundreds of thousands of years and there will be a sizable island there ah see I was beat to it lol
  7. there might be nothing wrong with those pics john you can get bright lights near places of seismic activity or volcanic activity http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthquake_light
  8. from the looks of the recent earthquakes its looking more and more like if anything is going to happen its going to be a fissure eruption with the quakes taking a clear line and also the quakes at both sites tending to rise and fall together it would lead you to think there is a clear connection between the two. don't quite know what the first swarm to the northwest of the now main swarm was maybe the intrusion of lava started progressing then found a weaker and easier passage or maybe it was where the ground fist started to slip and give way. its going to be really interesting to see what happens in the coming days hopefully if something happens its explosive so we don't really need to care apart from planes but if we happen to get a fissure eruption it could be quite a scary time we would need to track closely what gases were coming out. theres still every chance it will just die off and nothing will happen though but that's some amount of quakes for nothing to come at the end of it only thing is though quake sizes haven't been that high but that could change closer to a main event.
  9. are they pools outside the crater and the venting of gas and steam normal for that volcano or is that to do with the current activity?
  10. maybe its waiting to give us an independence display
  11. i wouldnt get too excited yet depending on what kind of eruption it is if one happens it could be quite dangerous for us. if we get a big explosive eruption then it shouldn't be so bad but if we get a more laki style eruption with huge lava flows then because it doesn't eject everything to a good height the sulphur can hang around at the surface and leave us with poisonous sulphur clouds floating about which isn't good for us and wont be good for farmer and crops and livestock as it could wipe a fair amount out and leave us struggling remember all they years ago laki killed about 1 million people and look how many more people there are in Europe and even north America now. so I would be a little wary these big Iceland eruptions can cause some real problems katla isn't so bad because its usually big explosive eruptions so everything gets blown to height this could turn out to be rather problematic but we wont know till it blows and we see just how it blows.
  12. take your eyes off the seismic site for Iceland for a couple of days to engage in the referendum and this is what happens lol I did some reading up on this a while ago and if it does go it could be something I know it has been having upsets for a while now but this looks much more than previous. we could see something bigger than katla here if it does go and it is a worry for air travel and that as in 2010 its looking like a blocked jet going through Iceland and into Europe could persist for a while. this could easily cause some global cooling if it goes in a big way as it has the scope to release a lot of sulphur into the atmosphere should it be explosive and not just a lava flow event.
  13. 62/63, 78/79 and 46/47 were all pretty special winters and would have had far more ice over the pole in the summers.
  14. not necessarily the earliest snow to fall widespread even in London was in September albeit it was over a hundred years ago but nov/dec 2010 had only happened a hundred years earlier so one year we could see a September snowfall and maybe even a decent cold snap and hopefully it will be this year http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/learning/snow/snow-in-the-uk
  15. Met Office Storms â€@metofficestorms 16m Rain mounting up in southern Japan from Typhoon #Halong. Torigatayama has recorded 589 mm (23.2") in the last 24 hours.
  16. your not kidding. BBC Weather â€@bbcweather 10m Typhoon #HALONG: 528mm of rain in Funato during Saturday. Emergency weather warnings in force for Mie prefecture. not far off 21 inches.
  17. and while we talk about some minor flooding japans getting humped on. BBC Weather â€@bbcweather 10m Typhoon #HALONG: 528mm of rain in Funato during Saturday. Emergency weather warnings in force for Mie prefecture. that's not far under 21 inches of rain. that country has taken a fair battering from all angles these past few years.
  18. soz for taking so long to reply its been so quiet in here I've not really been checking regularly. it is a possibility but I cant say for sure I know I was told that there was water coming up out the drains in the street down where the cinema is but didn't hear anything about in the cinema but the fact you have been told that and I have been told there was definitely flooding down there then a good chance it is true. its quite remarkable though I am only a mile maybe just over from there and we hardly seen any rain here yesterday and just goes to show how even really small distances can deliver so much difference in weather at the same time but that's what makes it all so interesting for us.
  19. its funny 09/10 is being talked about as during this summer JOE B has been on twitter quite a few times banging on about how the USA summer pattern has resembled 2009 quite closely hopefully it all holds good promises for this winter coming but as we all know weather is a fickle beast and it could all mean nothing.
  20. ooooo decent crack of thunder there not rumbly more the crackly kind just off to the east.
  21. right i am a bit baffled here and I am wondering if these sunspot numbers we are getting are correct below I have yesterdays sun on the left and on the right todays sun yesterday had a count of 119 and today we have a count of 158 even though today it looks like we have less on the visible disk than we had yesterday it might be valid but it just looks odd to me.
  22. its how the aliens get you without anybody else noticing
  23. that's the way I read it that its interaction with the trough is going to be key as to just how much it deepens as it comes in and we probably wont get the full story on just how deep it will be till we see just how much interaction there will be also there is reasonable power in the jet stream as well at that time so will surely be some interaction with this also so one to watch as it may really wrap up as it approaches similar to we saw during the winter I for one don't really mind seeing this just now and hopefully can bring on a proper wind fest autumn this time round and get it all out the way before we get to winter this shows better and I am wondering if we may get a sting jet coming from this one again similar to winter and it wouldn't be out of the question with America falling into a similar pattern as winter with cold troughs digging south into the country
  24. yeah but that was between cycles this is a totally different beast all together this is a hybernative (don't even think that's a word) state so the sun is acting all together differently than it would during a lull between one cycle and another and at a far extended timescale as well.
