  1. Massive rainstorm hit the Birkenhead/Wallasey part of the Wirral on the 15th of August 1954
  2. 4.4mm so far since midnight. Really dull with low light. Darkest it has been this time for sometime.
  3. Not been too bad here since that Storm Antoni. Only one or two showers.
  4. Managed to capture two Perseids on my overnight timelapse. Cloud amounts very infuriating
  5. If you thought July 2023 was bad for wetness, August 1956 easily eclipses it. August 1956 is the wettest summer month ever recorded for the region with only 11 other months wetter than August 1956. The rainfall figures are incredible Formby: 330.9mm Bolton: 301.1mm Kendal: 283.4mm Northwich: 280.9mm Keswick: 270.5mm Morecambe: 246.6mm Blackpool Airport: 239mm Birkenhead: 221.2mm Manchester Whitworth Park: 216.7mm

It is clear here that June is going to be the best of the summer months with July the worst. The question is where August lies between the two?
  7. Is it a poor summer? July was poor but June wasn't, depends on what August delivers but it is definitely not in the 2012 category of poorness.
  8. Horseflies. Absolute vile insects at this time of the year. The way they bite (females), I don't see what purpose these insects serve.
  9. Yes, I reckon the average Joe/Jill Bloggs don't even know there are numerous wasp species. They only know the yellowjacket and that's it.
  10. Funny you say record breaking territory because it was 20 years ago today that the UK recorded its first official 100°F temperature. The highest maximum ever recorded at the time.
  11. Feels and smells warmer this morning compared to yesterday. Lowest 14.8°C
  12. Overall, summer 1973 wasn't too bad (Manchester Summer Index of 234). There was a short hot spell mid month where Southampton recorded 32.1°C Evening Standard Mirror Liverpool Daily Post Daily Telegraph Derby Birmingham Cambridge

  14. Anthony Eden lasted less the 2 years but his premiership encompassed snow in May, a superb summer in 1955, a severe February in 1956, a diabolical summer in 1956, a white Christmas in 1956.
  15. Remember this from the Manchester Evening News from 9th August 1993. I'm pinching myself this was 30 years ago! The run finally broke on the 13th August 1993 I recall going to a great uncle's funeral during the last week of August 1993 and it was so chilly at the cemetery. Only got to 14°C
  16. However a storm being named is not done for flooding reason and was Whitby even given a warning?
