  1. The precip over SW England is looking large enough and travelling in the right direction to hit SE Wales soon.. But will it maintain intensity? Increase in intensity? Snow? Rain? Anything could happen right now so it's very interesting. Lots more developments to come if you look at the radar progress
  2. It's definitely building a lot after every radar update. I don't want to jinx myself but I wouldn't be too miserable if we got rain instead if snow considering the intensity of it and the thunder/lightening/hail reports from SW England.
  3. Clear-ish skies here in Newport so I bet the temps are getting low! Too cold to get out of bed and check.. hopefully the calm before the approaching storm.
  4. Likelihood of that area of intense precipitation falling as snow and stalling over an area for an hour, a meter of snow anyone?
  5. Precipitation intensity in the SW is crazy! I spot a 96mm/hour :o I wonder if it'll reach us with any similar intensity
  6. Hmm M.O heavy snow forecast Wednesday morning now? Still nothing for tomorrow, no rain sleet or snow. Seems a bit all over the place at the moment!
  7. After reading the SW England thread, we shouldn't write off the snow over the next few days! Snow has been reported just over the channel in Weston and Bristol so there isn't much in it.
  8. Raining in Newport still, not much visible snow melt though. It'll all re-freeze as soon as the rain stops as the temps drop so it's not too bad.
  9. Raining in newport. 0 degrees. Not looking good for tomorrow's "snow".
  10. BBC forecast showed rain on S Wales coast so some people's worries regarding temps may well turn out to be true. Still could change either way though
  11. Clearing skies here in Newport, temp has dropped from 3 to 0 in the past hour. Not sure how long it'll last though with showers in the channel edging closer.
  12. Still nothing forecast on the websites, it's now just 14-18 hours away what the hell! If the charts are right then people are going to have a shock tomorrow since no one really knows it's forecast to snow here.
  13. I'm not convinced we'll get as much snow as Friday. It doesn't seem that intense of bbc forecasts but maybe they just haven't gone into much detail yet.
  14. Issued at: 1212 on Mon 21 Jan 2013 Valid from: 0300 on Tue 22 Jan 2013 Valid to: 2359 on Tue 22 Jan 2013 Outbreaks of sleet or snow may affect parts of southwest England and south Wales during Tuesday. The main risk appears to be in the western portion of the warning area but snow may extend east as far as Wiltshire and Hampshire late on Tuesday. Some 2-5 cm of snow is likely in places with a risk of as much as 5-10 cm, more particularly high ground. The public should be aware of possible disruption to transport. As this is very likely to be updated please monitor the website for possible updates.
  15. -1 here, some thaw around houses and on pavements but snow still remains 2-3 inches deep on non man-made surfaces.
  16. No sign of snow tomorrow AM or PM in the BBC/M.O forecasts for me, yet TV forecasts and models are showing prolonged heavy snow!
  17. Some twitter talk from the experts about the intensity of the precipitation Tuesday. Could dump a lot of snow on Wales or the SW, although Ian F also warns of the risk of rain/sleet instead of snow... Anything could happen in just 2 days, let alone next weekend.
  18. Only -3 in Newport currently. I hope we get clear skies before the snow melts for the cold temps and for a nice NASA pic of frozen Britain
  19. Derek rightly maintaining an open view on twitter regarding next weekend. It's a long time away in terms of weather and modelling so I find it bizarre how many posters on the forum are sure it'll be mild. @DerekTheWeather: Blimey, the Canadian model has a big low over the English Channel next Sunday - would bring heavy snow to the south! http://t.co/dlLw19tM
  20. There's been virtually no snow melt on surfaces above ground level (fences, sheds, bins etc) and on the grass, still 3-4 inches. Quite a bit of melt on roads and pavements, ground must have been too warm? But it's also frozen and the paths are like sheets of ice up to an inch thick! Snow risk for today and tomorrow has decreased but Tuesday we have heavy snow forecast. Also seen some cold temp charts down to -10, -14 in rural areas this week :o
  21. Models have been wrong even a few days out lately. Wales for instance has seen bands of snow and showers that have been unpredicted until 12 hours before. So I would look at charts with a pinch of salt since things have changed so much.
  22. If the Atlantic doesn't break through and the SSW effects our weather over the coming weeks then this could be a lengthy cold spell.
  23. Thanks for the replies regarding SSW, it's amazing that the effects could still be coming in the near future and into February. Hopefully more cold and snow but there's always that small chance we could miss out.
  24. Quite impressive to get 4/5 days of falling snow in just 1 week, some winters don't even have a single day of snow! And there's more to come according to charts.
  25. With all this cold weather I forgot about the SSW, has it started to effect the lower atmosphere yet? Was the recent cold caused by it or are we yet to see the effect of the SSW?
