  5. Loving it ,spent all week helping out on the farm with the haymaking what should have been done in July!
  6. A hot day, cloudy to start and later with sunshine from mid morning until tea, calm, max 27 deg,min 14 deg
  7. Many farmers in the valley starting their haymaking after just making a satrt at the end of June.Never in my l50 years have we gone the entire July and August and not made hay,not even 2008 and 2012,truely shocking!
  8. A very unusual year which gave a very late snowfall in the last days of April affecting the South and London.Following on September recorded one of its highest temperatures of 90F on the 11th yet just a week laterafter a dramatic switcharound snow affected the North and the southwest ,the earliest dates for snow to fall in England. After that followed the coldest Autumn of the Century with November recording a crazy -23 deg midmonth.
  9. Dry ,misty and cloudy clearing to give sunny spells from mid morning ,cloudier later with a few spits around tea,max 19 deg,min 9 deg.
  10. Not forgetting November 1985,the coldest November since 1923 only November 1993 has been remotely as cold since with cold Novembers in recent times of 2010 and 2016 almost 2 degrees warmer.
  11. Dry to start then a few light showers mid morning clearing to give good sunny spells, max 17 deg,min 10 deg
  12. Dry to start but some light showers and drizzle before midday then dry with some sunny spells later, max 17 deg,min 12 deg
  13. Dry and mainly cloudy ,some brief sunny spells ,max 17 deg,min 10 deg
  14. Yes September 1986 averaged 11.05 deg at Bradford which would have been around 9 deg where we were at 340 metres and we had several groundfrosts, unheard of today,it was very dry with only 7mm rain and 170 hours of sun.
  15. That is the problem with statistics,it can make something well out of the ordinary look ordinary. As a farmer i am struggling to think of any year in the last 40 that has not given a handful of dry days with some sun in the whole of July and August, that is not ordinary, that is almost past Extraordinary!
  16. Mainly dry and cloudy in the morning then some showers and a heavy spell of rain, drier later with a few sunny spells, max 16 deg,min 9 deg
  17. Just looked up some met office figures from my nearest station in Bradford. Average highs for the month August 1986 is 15.9 deg and average lows at 9.3 deg Augusts of 1985,1987,1988 and 1992 all had cooler highs lower than any since all around 17-18 deg The coolest highs in recent times is 2014 at 18.1 deg and also has the coolest low at 10.8 deg which includes all the poor summers since 2007,just goes to show just how cool 1986 was. September 1986 is the coolest September since 1952.
  18. A light shower to start leaving a dry morning with some sunny spells.Becoming cloudy and a very dark cloud gave a thunderstorm with thunder and lightening, torrential rain and hail for 10 mins leaving steady rain before a dry end to the day.Max 18 deg,min 9 deg.
  19. From my records August started with a couple of windy days then fine for a few days.Cooler weather came on the 9th and the first real wet days came on the 15th,16 and 17th.A couple of warmer days on the 19th and 20th.Showery again on 21st,22 and 23rd before heavy rain on the 25th and 26th,rain also on the 27th and 28th ending the month with a couple of fine dry days.I do not have any temperature records but if areas in the South and away from the hills were the coldest August since 1956 you can only imagine what it was like at 340 metres in the Pennine hills where it is almost always windy, cloudy and threatening rain clouds. Also i think like Summer8906 in that night time temps really made this month so cool so unlike weather in the 2020s.
  20. Mainly dry but a light shower to start and a band of drizzle around midday, sunny spells in the morning but cloudy the remainder, max 17 deg,min 9 deg.
  21. Mainly dry with some good sunny spells but a few brief sharp showers, max 22 deg,min 12 deg
  22. Dry and cloudy into the afternoon before good sunny spells arrived,a few light showers, max 21 deg,min 12 deg
  23. No you dont want sileage in the rain either but when i farmed there were several times we continued when the weather turned especially when there wasnt much left to bring in.One i remember well was we did quite a bit in wet conditions in the first cut 1988,probably early June.
  24. Am not talking about sileage, you can make that in the rain if you have to .I am talking about dry crisp hay where you need at least 3-4 days of warm and sunny weather.
