Between Xmas and New Year is often a decent time, even through into mid-Jan can be ok as well as BA and the like have sales on.

The GFS-P is a new version of the GFS model run at NOAA so will have quite different output at times to the current GFS.

Morning, just wanted to let you know that we've made a couple of updates to the chart viewers on the site to make it easier to jump between the different models, hope you find it useful.
http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=nwdc;sess=
Also, the GFS(P) vs GFS comparison viewer is still running to allow you to compare the 2 alongside eachother (00z and 12z only):

stratospheric warming. have a look here- http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=nwdc;sess= choose chart type and away you go.
have a look in the strat thread. it will help you understand what these charts mean (not that i'm an expert by any means!)
Ed wrote an excellent tutorial on the stratosphere for those who may be interested:

NCEP are saying that the 12z GFS parallel will be delayed for around 2 hours today..

Definitely can't recreate this, have tested against all of our web servers & checked our external monitoring and there's nothing flagging up. Perhaps clearing your browser cache and cookies will solve it.
If not, please let me know which browser you're using, and which pages are throwing up the error.
-
Not seen any other reports of issues at all tbh, will look into it though.

I know we cover this quite regularly but for new people, and those who have maybe forgotten just wanted to quickly remind everyone the difference between this thread and the model ramps/moans and banter thread.
In short, this thread is for more reasoned discussion of the models, that doesn't mean there can be no emotion or excitement etc, but as people come to this thread to read model discussion it's things like these which need to be posted into the other thread:
"OMG this run is great, time to dust off the sledge"
"This run is rubbish"
"All the runs show cold next week, I can't wait for it to snow"
"Ignore the models, I bet it's going to get cold anyway"
"I want it to be hot/cold/wet/dry/snowy, when will the models show that?"
"The models have all shown cold in 10 days time for 3 days now, but now they're not [insert generic moan/groan here!]"
So please take a moment to think about where the best place is to make your post, and if your post isn't model related in the slightest don't forget there are dozens of other active threads to use across the forum as well
The model ramps/moans/banter thread is here:

Odd, well let me know if it appears again - there definitely shouldn't be one there!
-
thanks for that Paul, did they give any indication why? The parallel, if it is that, on the 500mb statistics for 6 days suggests it is doing much better than the original?
A handful of bugs that were found, which means a restart once they're fixed, and therefore a new 30 day period before going live apparently.

Hi Andy, when I'm watching there's no icon on there - could you post up a screen shot?
-
Not sure if this has been mentioned at all, but the GFS upgrade has been pushed to January sometime....
Jan 7th is the latest date for it.

Wondering what the polar vortex is? Have a read of Nick F's blog for all the info

The NMM will pick out more local detail, the GFS is a broader brush, but is still a useful tool.
-
We do use the higher res nmm for the storm forecast (the model doesn't create separate convective cloud in the first 48 hours, it's bundled together within non-convective cloud), the storm risk maps use the GFS which is lower res

Can I just say that the Express article is clearly an over the top spin of our forecast, which doesn't represent the truth of what was written within it. So best to ignore it!
The actual forecast is here:
