Anyone know why the Glencoe / Nevis webcams are clear when the radar shows these areas being plastered by preceipitation?

Appears to be RAINING on the Leadhills webcam at 400m - I was sure that would be all white at the moment

I have a house up in Oldfold and it was like sheet ice up on the Meadows about an hour ago

I was out walking in Aberdeen last night and tonight and is does feel marginal for wintry precipitation but showers continue to fall as rain. Plenty ice and frosted car windows but it just refuses to snow here!

I picked up on this the other day actually. Radar was showing light precipitation but nothing was falling from the sky

It seems the models have been showing a cooler pattern for several weeks now with the Atlantic well and truly 'switched off'. However, it also seems that there's no proper cold to the north and east of us to hence why we're still getting rain / icy conditions at sea level. These synoptics look ideal for a really cold winter if only there was some true Polar / Continental air to tap into.

First post here for a number of years I reckon. A lot of snow above 900m today - now snowing on the Glenshee cam but not Drumochter so the snow level has lowered to around 600m now

Seems to have been a lot of rain in the Angus / Tayside area over the past 24 hours due to the stalled front - would be interesting to hear of rainfall totals in this area?

For me the 12z GFS is the best run since late Feb/early March 2006 - we could be looking at around 10" / 12 " of snow by next weekend

"afoot" being the correct term since that's how much snow could be lying in Aberdeen by next weekend! Fantastic charts after virtually 3 years of snowless weather in Aberdeen - March 2006 springs to mind regarding next week...

Amazing looking 06z on the GFS - reminds me of March 2006 when we had a foot on snow in low lying Aberdeen city centre courtesy of a 5 / 6 day northerly

I'll be interested to see how much snow is deposited in NE Scotland during Saturday morning as that feature runs down the North Sea - I imagine heavy snow showers will merge to give a more prolonged period of snow with winds increasing too. It look a relatively 'cold core' low too, normally these lows contain less cold air turning snow more to rain at low levels

The fact is every summer since 2006 has been horrific, in Scotland at least and probably even SE England too apart from the odd short spell. I'd love to hear any theories as to why our summers are now appear to be cool, wet and frequently windy with low pressure in charge? It seems like there was more sun in winter in Aberdeen with the persistent westerly airstream than there has been in summer...I'm gonna check those stats now....

I reckon this winter (January and February in particular) has to be one of, if not the sunniest on record in Aberdeen. Not sure if anyone has stats on this but it seems that about 80% of days the sun has been shining most of the day and of course, we've had our fair share of frosts because of this. Cheers

Yeah sun lowering and temperature falling so shower came in good time for the snow to lie, although slushy in the city centre. Radar showing 'light' precipitation but that shower was moderate / occasionally heavy at times. I'd anticipate scattered flurries into tonight with a light covering at best

Haha, I know - tell me about it! I have a feeling we're gonna get a pasting on Saturday and beyond though....just hope the roads are okay going to Hampden and back. I'll guess at 7" in my back garden come Wed morning.

Yeah, we might see an isolated snow shower tomorrow forcing its way over the mountains but perhaps more of a chance on Thursday as the wind turns more into the NW. Still, it's Saturday onwards our 'proper' snow arrives

Looks like even Aberdeen will see several inches of snow between Saturday and Wednesday next week as that Northerly sets in. With all the westerly winds, we've had an incredible sunny winter...or so it seems.

I've always been fascinated how ash volcanic eruptions cool the planet. The main example that comes to mind is the Krakatoa eruption in Indonesia where the Earth's average temperature dropped 1.2c on average for the following 5 years.

Yes I believe there are actually 3 patches remaining on Aonach Mor and the one you see clearly in the pic is massive by all accounts and is expected to survive.

You'd think Ben Lawers would retain snow well at it's altitude but maybe it's not prone to late snow retention?

There's no way Nevis Range only has 60cm of snow on the upper mountain when Glencoe has 340cm

For many, this has been a disappointing winter thus far for snowfall. However, for upland parts of Scotland and especially over Glencoe and the Nevis Ranges, they are speaking about the possibility of record breaking snow depths should the current weather pattern persist.I'd be interested to know of winters where low lying areas saw very little in the way of snow with high altitude locations recording heavy snowfalls?I believe 1994, 1957 and also 1951 of good examples of this.Early indications suggest that this may be an excellent year for snowpatch survivals due to the persistent SW'ly gales drifting and depositing colossal depths of snow in the sun shadowed NE facing coires and gullies.
