  1. Totally agree. We’re just over 1/3 of the way through the month and have had 2/3rds of the monthly average rainfall. Look pretty nailed on to be our 5th wetter than average month in a row here, still amazed December managed it. Some sunshine would be nice…
  2. I’m in Aviemore Sunday - Tuesday on a winter hillwalking course… could be a little wintry going by the forecasts…
  3. They’ll chuck an amber out on Monday evening no doubt…. Got up tinto today, brutal weather really. Heavy wet snow at the top, poor visibility and very wet underfoot. No good photos Evaporative cooling had done its job with it being only 2c and sleet at Abington services.
  4. About 10mm so far today, not the heaviest rain. Just quite constant and more to come. Hopefully no real flooding as a result but roads are quite poor already. 9c and feeling mild. My plan is to visit Glenshee for some skiing on Sunday so got my fingers crossed for the weather to not be mental.
  5. Yup, shame for all the business and homes. Lucky my town centre flat is up a hill from the water but still a bit close for comfort. Photo quality isn’t good but that water is so deep. No exaggeration to say 10-15 feet until i’f touch the roadway beneath.
  6. 58.2mm today, says it all really. Only the far right 1/3 of that photo is usually river, you can make out the boundary. Some wee towns were completely cut off
  7. It is to clear through by the early afternoon but roads are currently pretty horrendous to say the least. 8c here, very windy with horizontal rain.
  8. @Ravelin @Norrance Yep and you wonder why mountain rescue are called out so frequently. Even that group of dangerously inexperienced boys aside (at least they bailed out), there were several others (all from south of the border - just an observation) who said to me near the top ‘This is my first munro in winter. I don’t know what I was expecting but I didn’t think it would be this bad’. I mean do these folk not look at a forecast. Then they basically run down the mountain due to panic which has been brought on by the cold which usually leads to injury. On a brighter note, there were lots of people seemingly v experienced enjoying a casual stroll. Quite surreal. Anyway, back in the land of the swamp. We were on 1mm at the start of the 18th. We’re now on 98mm and actually stand a chance at reach the average monthly rainfall which is obscene (151). 7c, frequent showers. EDIT - I see there is now an amber weather warning out for tomorrow. Gonna smash through 150mm which in 12 days is not ideal.
  9. Ben Lomond bared it’s teeth today, snow line from boxing day was down to about 200m. Timed it well as when the precipitation set in I was at about 600m and it was sleet which turned to snow. Pretty chilly at the top as the video shows. I should have had crampons with me tbh. Fair few of the ill prepared had to turn back, taking on a munro in trainers and with no gloves…. C’mon. 10. Great pics in this thread and appreciate the feedback re winter tyres. Grim day here, very wet morning. Afternoon not much better, rivers very full. 8c and only recently stopped raining, 14mm.
  11. A ‘smattering’ of snow here so 3rd of the winter. Some lethal heavy sleet fell for a while earlier on and that has now frozen. An ice rink is the result, windscreen wipers frozen solid to the car etc.
  12. Thanks, those look like the ticket. I do snow chase quite a bit and they’d be useful!
  13. Question - Are there are all season/winter tyres that people on here would recommend? Roads today were pretty atrocious apparently, would be a good investment i’m thinking.
  14. Some snow about 4am here when a frost had set in (low was -1.2c) but did slowly thaw. Due to being nightshift I did not get out exploring today, sadly can’t share a friend’s insta story but can confirm Wanlockhead looked immense for sledging today. Shame it’s to set in so early tomorrow as will look wonderful for a time (see photo). Down here it’s heavy sleet atm, 3c. Grim.
  15. Been a horrendous day weather wise here, a lot of rain but doesn’t matter too much given today is xmas day. Sadly looks like i’ll be a bit too far SE for any fun and games tomorrow. Hopefully some snowy scenes will be posted in here. Tackling Ben Lomond mid week which will get some of the winter kit used i’d think given the forecast
  16. Surely this thread is one for the ‘UK’? Where it is mentioned that for the South it shows X, Centre Y and the North Z. Use the regional threads for ‘is it going to snow IMBY’ Why would I care what it shows for Brighton et al? Given your weather in winter is often far milder than that experienced in Scotland (and far warmer in summer etc).
  17. I would advise against, not experienced ice like this in a long time. Light Snow at my parents (countryside on outskirts) but rain in the town itself. It also rained about 10pm last night but air temp was -0.5c. I suspect a few broken bones at A&E today, my friends were out drinking and got home literally shuffling on the ground it was that bad. I had a 10 meter walk from car to flat, was fully sober, 27 and pretty capable physically… was gripping to walls and handrails for dear life. Lots of road closures. Further ahead - Looking very mild tomorrow but the problem is wet and windy is always associated down here with that. Fingers crossed for a sexy snowy battleground on xmas day
  18. Took some photos when I was back my house in the town (Not the best, phone hasn’t done it justice). Last time the river Nith froze over was December 2010. Other cold spells were not quite long enough in duration. I remember the thaw in January 2011 when the whole river made almost disturbing cracking sounds as it broke apart. Nowhere near as thick this time but still impressively cold given its urban location about 20 miles from the solway.
  19. Starts to cry. The cracking weather continues down here, totally sunny clear conditions. Yesterday a ‘high’ of -2.3c (second coldest of this spell), low of -6.1c. Today currently -0.4c so a 4th ‘ice’ day looks likely. Even the river Nith is starting to freeze in areas with the most shade. Gorgeous weather but looks like the dry weather is set to end. Here comes the rain! (At least the hills should stay White)
  20. A slight dusting of snow yesterday fell, shame it reached 3c in bright sunshine which had a good go at melting it. Overnight low of ‘only’ -5.8c. However thick freezing fog here today, easily going to be the coldest 24 hours of this cold spell. At midday we were still at -3.4c. Today cold wise reminds me of Dec 2010, not been a bad spell at all. Even down here 2 days of falling snow, yesterday it stuck. Very sunny and I’ve lost count but I think 5 or 6 nights breaching -5c. Fingers crossed for a snowy breakdown and a more potent return soon.
  21. Coldest night so far, -7.1c. Yesterday was fairly cloudy, -6.7/-0.2c (first ice day) Milder uppers aren’t an issue down here as no precipitation!
  22. Ahhh okay, i’m with you. Sounds like a scary (or exhilarating depending on your POV) drive home. It’s front so not the worst, not a BMW! I’ll bear the pull away in second tip in mind. I think all season or winter tyres would make a huge difference and something to consider but down here it’s easy to justify taking your chances.
  23. Appreciate that, what is the ‘snow ploughing’ you speak of? I know what it is for skiing and have moved passed doing that All common sense really, I think the general standard of driving is v poor. I often aim to drive roads (Small A or B roads) without braking at all, if i’m ticking on then pinch brake whilst wheels are straight prior to the corner but that's obviously summer driving. I do have a lot of experience in skids (usually deliberate ie quad bike) so when I have ‘lost’ it I’ve always avoided binning it but it rocks your confidence obviously. I think an issue is my car (2L diesel) is ‘high’ geared so 3rd would be 20mph+ and would stall much lower. So you go second but unless trundling then torque is evident and the tail can wag the dog so I just feel like i’m treading on egg shells.
