Out of interest what are your tips for driving in snow? I’ve not had lots of experience, i’d like to think i’m a decent driver (don’t we all?) having had residential training courses (for work) but no idea what to do in snow. I just try to never brake

Unbelievable day. A family member used to operate the air traffic radar station on Green Lowther so always wanted to visit the ‘golf ball’, couldn’t have got a better day for it really. Even got a 7am shower which left about 1cm at village level (400m - Wanlockhead/Leadhills) which made it look pretty special. Could clearly see Sanquhar, Cumnock to the NW, North - some of the central belt but slightly obscured by mist, NE - Tinto, Broad law, White Coomb (all with snowy summits) and as far as Criffel and the solway to the South. On the drive back to Dumfries Skiddaw, Scafell pike etc could be seen. Back home, the frost has significantly advanced. Already -2.3c

Cracking photos! An impressively cold day here given no snow. My weather station is at my parent’s house with a small hill to the south, lose the sun about 11:30am in winter until Feb. A max of only 0.8c, in town I suspect 2c was reached. Temperatures on the way down, 0.2c currently. Should get up Green Lowther tomorrow, will look on enviously to the North-East.

-7c this morning (Eastriggs), I’ll check what my weather station recorded when I get home but suspect -5c ish going by wunderground. I think -12/13c is practically guaranteed, the summit of cairngorm is showing lows at that temperature for Sunday/Monday, surely a valley in the highlands will smash through that

I love these refreshing crystal clear conditions. Visibility is superb. Sadly accepted I won’t see any snow here but looks like nor will the central belt either (or not much) but have my fingers crossed for that to not be the case. Still, nights below -5c are not to be sniffed at nor are ‘ice’ days. Bring it on and i’ll be jealously looking at the photos in this thread from our Northern contingent. Today reached 5.5c, already down to 2c.

Very chilly last few days. Yesterday didn't get above 4c during daylight hours due to the thick fog and today has been no warmer. Only my return home car was showing 1.5c at 4pm. Feels very seasonal! Bring on the proper winter weather

I was born in Dec 95 and got out of hospital around xmas, very snowy photos with the long drive up to the elevated farm house inaccessible to even a 4x4 and my dad wrapping me up in numerous coats. Again photos I think from Feb 96, a snowfall which @damianslaw refers to. Built an igloo with all the snow and the snow was touching the stomachs of the ponies in the yard. I suspect given the elevation (about 200m asl) we’ll have seen a similar depth to the 18 inches described, maybe a bit more. I no longer live at any elevation, the only recent snowfall which comes close to that was the big battleground snowfall of March 2013, a cracker. Been sadly very rare here during my lifetime.

That’s true but would take a fair bit to melt that amount of snow, I would hope a few drifts will survive. Longer term prospects don’t look like the usual zonal rubbish

Snow drifts 10ft deep in places on Cairngorm now. Snow down to about 650m or so. Let’s hope it now stays the winter!

24.6km walked (couple detours), majority was walked in soggy slush with 50mph+ winds over 3000ft. Never been so soaked in sub zero temperatures before. However where Cairngorm failed me (fair bit of lying snow on the side sheltered from the wind tbf) and my girlfriend and I were contemplating suicide… Ben Macdui delivered 7+ hours of driving (round trip) was all worth it. Reached the summit (1309m/4300ft) about 2pm, -3c and snowing (Terrible quality of pictures/video but they convey the point. Snow and surprisingly lots of it!) IMG_7025.MOV

The top isn’t ‘that’ high (1097m) compared to the absolute summits ie > 1300m so there will be a wee bit more at the top of Ben Nevis et al. Yup, Sunday - Tues does look chilly. Fingers crossed for more of the same (or better)

13.6mm here today, rain was fairly light in the main but with moderate bursts which others have also stated. Pretty grim, again a high of 8c. After a good look at the weather was able to move my munro walk to Saturday. Gonna do the loop to Ben macdui from Cairngorm, i’m expecting some snowy scenes. Gotta make hay as the sun shines as they say! (If you’re of a snow lover persuasion) Praying the forecasted wind doesn’t strength as today’s prediction for tomorrow reached 100mph so basically certain death.

I was going to say about 20-21 but yeah that’s pretty depressing. Snow just has that magic about it and there’s nothing I like more than a blue bird day, at least the outlook is colder now and fairly active. Southerly winds can stay away

Good point, I shall devise a gameplan tomorrow with the old ball and chain and get something sorted. Would be great if the lakes had a good winter!

Whereabouts? I’ve been looking at Nevis, Ben macdui - anywhere which will give me some lovely snow. I need 1200m i’d say having studied Ben More (Strilingshire one). All look soaking wet at low levels but c’est la vie. I’m determined, whiteout conditions or not. It’s happening

Surprisingly chilly today. High was 8.1c, low 2.5c. Getting chilly again with clear skies. Some lovely rain forecast over the next 48 hours. Already had 120mm for the month (86% of average - 139.6mm) so we’re gonna smash 200 again no doubt. Flooding likely. Climbing munros again Friday, I will be finding my first snow of the year so will probably slog up Ben Nevis in the pouring rain in order to achieve that goal. Shame i’m not able to climb sat/sun as weather looks nice and chilly. Highs of -4c for Cairngorm by Sunday which is much better

Going to be getting up some munros on Friday, undecided where but finding snow is a must. Weather is looking pretty horrific but my skin is waterproof… Delighted to see it’s to get colder, by Sunday Cairngorm is seeing highs of -4/-5c. Much better…

Bit late really given the fact all the fields are flooded and smaller rivers have burst their banks in several places with another 12 hours of rain forecast but anyway. Cracking photos HC, jealous of the snowy views. Back in our temperate lands… A mild start to the month that is going to get even milder over the next few days. Been very wet, local river breached its banks 2 nights ago. Today was supposed to be a nice afternoon however was very frequently wet. Tomorrow looks a shocker, drier thereafter but I won’t hold my breath in the land of swamp. 13c.

As others have said, a chillier start to the day when compared to the recent mildness. 6c at 8:30am. I’m in the area where both the wind and rain weather warnings are in force so we shall see just how wild today gets. Had a short period of occasionally very heavy rain so far. October finished on 140% of average rainfall wise (214mm), November starting off in similar fashion however fingers crossed the hints of drier and colder weather in the computer models come to fruition!

Second this… but worse. Can’t believe the sunshine comments. Rained all day and I mean ALL day, the only good thing was the rain was light. Tomorrow looks very wet and much heavier. Grim.
