The mask was to hide what you were mouthing?

Denial is a psychological defence mechanism. Don't push it with her and just keep going about your business and keeping you both safe, she'll deal with it in her own way. My mother was like that with my father's terminal cancer. If someone builds a brick wall in their mind and you attack it with a sledge hammer, you'll both get trapped beneath the falling debris.

Yes Europe is no China, I read an interview with Slovak citizen in Italy that lot of young Italians treat school closures like a holiday and gather en mass in shopping centres.Being from overly social culture like the latin one is disadvantage as they just wont stay indoors. Here in Slovakia we have 10 cases so far and generaly slavic countries are very disciplined and listen to guidelines as we were used to in communism. Bratislava region had no issue closing schools and our sporting events are mostly canceled or postponed

A lovely cultural insight - this may help people understand the "flexible" nature of the Italian "lockdown". Thank you.

  3. Director General of Helath here in France says that the virus is circulating more and more actively and that a scenario like that in Italy must be prepared for in France. We must look at what is happening beside us and realise that it is quick, brutal and localised. We must prepare to have some areas much more affected than others.

Think rather than the CMO, it's one of the heads of the medical service in one of the affected provinces. This from BBC:

"Italian medical chief dies after contracting virus

The head of the medical association in the northern Italian province of Varese, Roberto Stella, 67, has died of respiratory failure after contracting coronavirus.

He had been practising medicine at an outpatient clinic in Busto Arsizio, north-west of Milan, and Italian reports say he and a colleague were infected at the weekend.

Varese is in the Lombardy region, which has been at the centre of Italy's coronavirus outbreak."

Sorry, misread that one. Thanks for the correction

No more news on our situation here and still no update.

I will highlight this from Tamara's post as it is very sound advice.

Any improvement one can make to lung function is likely to prove beneficial in the event of development of pneumonia, be it through Covid-19, Influenza or any other pathogen.

Being fit and healthy is not a guarantee that you will avoid the severe effects of Covid-19, but it is really clear now, that poor health is an issue.

If you are able to make changes to your lifestyle (i acknowledge this is not necessarily a possibility for anyone with underlying health issues) you will not only be helping yourself, but you could also possibly be helping others! If taking up general moderate exercise proves to be the small difference between needing medical intervention, and fighting off an infection yourself, then you will have helped by removing demand on your health service.

I am no fitness nut!  I have seen enough winters to know what snowed in looks like! Up until a month ago, i smoked socially. I definitely drink too much and am most certainly seriously overweight.  I do at least participate in sport, so am not necessarily an irredeemable couch potato, but with just a few weeks of doing some moderate exercise when i can fit it in, and stopping the cancer sticks, the improvement in my breathing capacity is very notable.  I know this from having to run for the bus this morning, but i just also had a go at the lung capacity test Tamara described.  I managed that OK, but i am fairly sure if i had tried it back in January, i would have been a wheezing mess.

If you are in a position to make lifestyle changes (check with your GPs if unsure) then do so, you will probably feel the benefits quickly, and feel better mentally with respect to what is happening.  Important - Don't over do it! Going out and trying to run ten miles having not ever exercised and keeling over will not be beneficial! But doing enough gentle/moderate exercise to stress and enhance your breathing capacity is a good start.  Plenty of advice on line, including the NHS website, on starting up on exercise like couch to 5K. Spring is on the way, so give it a go if you can.

I've been saying this from the outset. I had a soggy feet run this evening with doglet and feel great. I don't think the endless gloom and wet has been helping my mood at all and running is the best boost I can give it. Another nice thing would be to be able to get out and do some work in the garden but that hasn't been possible yet.

I thought that was tomorrow night .

They normally produce two updates a day , one in the afternoon and one later in the evening .

He's addressing the nation tonight at 20h00. Strange that there's been no update though - maybe he'll announce it, among other things...

There's an understandable amount of anxiety and stress around at the moment related to CV, not least in here where there are 10s of posts an hour, some based on more science and expert evidence than others.  It's really worth taking time out as a few have said.  Latest WHO guidance on mental health during this situation (note in particular point 3).

Great! Doing all that and running and being with my dog. Still waking up.at 0300 or so with nightmares around this and so feeling tired the whole time. Doglet is comfort at night and we sleep close and warm but I/we won't rest easy until OH is safe and back here...

  8. "Merde"! My département bubble has gone. First confirmed case in a hand ball player in "87" Haute Vienne. A big social and sporting circle. He returned from a match in Dijon and then tested positive...no symptoms, so something going on with travel from nord-est.

  9. I get my relief from all negative things by running with and playing with my dog. My best friend lives for the moment and I try to as well. The intensive exercise focuses your mind and gives you all those great natural relaxation chemicals. Just the interaction between us relaxes me too. Since my OH has been away, Mylo has been sleeping on his half of the bed and all the insomnia/nocturnal anxiety problems that I had to take a week off work for have gone. I'd never say "get a dog" unless you are ready but certainly "be more dog".

There are just some people in the world unfortunately who think they're 'funny' posting that type of stuff.

Joking about a serious virus is one of the worst things you could do.

They're not joking. They're saying this religious dogmatic practice will protect them. Take that to your next RE/sociology/psychology/geography class and discuss!

Click on the hashtag CoronaVirusPakistan to see just some of the "merde" that is being promoted. "water is splashed on any part of the body and it can take off the virus". There are more enlightened posters but one imagines that the majority will listen to the rubbish...

If they can't get to grips with this then hundreds of thousands will die across Europe by the time this finally blows itself out over the next 12 months, this is not the time for ideology.

I really don't know how I feel/think about this now. I have too much personal/work involvement and I can't seperate head from heart. I think the EU/individual countries need to give it another week and see how things progress. Maybe, then, maybe there will be a need for a real curtailment of movement - regarding the logistics, I wouldn't even begin to speculate and it presents a personal and communal nightmare...

  13. Hey - here we go! M. Macron has said that the decisions by Italy and Austria to close their borders with Italy was a bad decision. The EU divided already! I did say this very early on about Schengen countries and how it's not going to be an easy ride for unilateral action...

Prob a combination of crappy weather (almost constant weekend storms keeping people in), us not shoving our faces into someone else's face the moment we meet them and our 'personal bubble' space that's helping.

Had a foreign lady standing behind me in a queue earlier today, she was so far up my backside so to speak, that if I'd tilted my head back by an inch I would have butted her on the nose with the back of my head >.< absolutely no concept of personal space whatsoever.

I thought of that the other evening. We kiss a lot here but those of us in the healthcare area have resorted to elbow bumping - it felt very uncomfortable yesterday with the nurse who was visiting one of my clients but we both did it - hesitantly - as we know each other well. It's called "proxemics" - the study of social distance - and it's interesting. The further north (given some differences) you go, the greater the expected distance. The further south, the less so. Think about it. Big animal skin fur coats insulating you from bodily contact historially in the north, more skimpy stuff further south. These are highly ingrained cultural memes and practices and very hard to break...

  15. Monsieur Macron has just finished a teleconference with EU leaders. The EU is working together against the virus including protecting the supply of masks and increasing the number of ventilators available to patients. 100 million € is to be unlocked for research into the disease and for a vaccine.

More and more we need this "working together" mentatlity and solidarity matters when we are faced with a common enemy such as this that does not respect borders, countries or cultures. The UK is included in the measures, by the way, for the moment...
