Hurricane Ophelia

Could have hit the mother of all thermals! -
Aye, some Sun would be nice, it's been demoralisingly dreary for the best part of a week now, the only slight interest being flooding on Wednesday!!

March 2013 was pretty epic though, although technically spring, I know. We had 21" snow on 21-22nd, and on 24th I was wading through 4ft drifts helping some seriously hypothermic walkers. That's a night I won't forget!

I love the way we all end up talking as if these things actually have volition, not sure if we tend to anthropomorphise them because they're named? -
Hurricane Irma

Looks like an Al Gore doodle pad! -
More chance of seeing a unicorn hereabouts due to cloud cover

probably a naïve question but could this be the sun's last hurrah before going very quiet for an extended period? A bit like a lawn mower revving up as it uses last dregs of petrol from the carb...

Trees and bracken definitely on the turn around here, not noticed conker trees going at all...

Yes, but this solar cycle is significantly less active than previous ones, well previous recent ones. I agree that the actual difference regarding what energy makes it to the trees etc will be minimal, and day length will be pretty much the same year on year on any given date, but maybe it doesn't need a big difference to trigger the changes in trees etc. I'm a country mile away from being any kind of an expert, just an observation / discussion point

I reckon it has here, yesterday was a dull fest almost all day with showers in the morning when MetO had us with sunny intervals, today similar! And I'm not necessarily talking about whether it's been cloudy or clear, more the amount of solar output the leaves have been receiving...
