  1. It's to big to be a Polar Low........

But at matters closer to home showers seem to be dying over the north West ATM...... What was looking good only an hour or so ago looks a little weak.

    It isn't at all.

    This is an example:

    It;s perfect size.

  2. if its more intense, then usually it will advect more warm

It is not likely to be a Polar Low.. but a Polar Low is essentially a low with only one defining front, or trough), which is embedded in cold air. Polar Lows can be referred to as the Arctic Hurricane, due to the lack of fronts within the system, but also because it gathers energy from the warm water. The result usually, if a Polar Low makes it down this far, is very intense snowfall for areas near the Irish or North sea. The totals that a Polar Low can deliver can be excessive.. not unusual to get 30cm out of it.. and along with thunderstorms too. Polar Lows are the holy grail of snow fans - but they are also exceptionally rare

    Perfect explanation.

  3. Whats the difference between that and a LP system and how and when would it affect us ??

Well I thought it was a PL at first, then someone pointed out it wasnt, but now Chiono thinks it is, so I'm getting a tad excited as these can be excellent for snow fall, but in a lot of cases they don't even make it because they die out quickly.

    Moisture suckers, snow dumpers.

  4. Sorry - but what is a polar low and how will it affect us?

It might not be a Polar Low, but if it was, prepare the shovels.

It's also known as the "Arctic Hurricane" - albeit a little dramatic, usually short lived, can travel down either side of the country, you generally can't forecast them, but if one does form, it sucks up a ton of moisture, and generally dumps it over us, giving lots of snow, or rain.

    Have a read: http://weatherfaqs.org.uk/node/95

  5. You can see the development of quite an intense & large streamer setting up on the latest radar, stretching from just NW IOM to NW Scotland... Tracking the path, it looks like heading for the Cheshire Gap / Runcorn way. That's some dumping... Ties in with the NMM too and Euro4.

No snow this side of the River, but In North Wales (on the other side), the snow extend right down to River level

    Nice Stephen,

    Good editing !

  6. there is a yorkshire thread is there not? :p

Eh? He's on this side of the Pennines, clearly knows the North West Thread is the best one around, and i'm glad he's here, gives me good snow updates for my trips!

What's your friend at the airport saying about tonight?

It's going to get Dark... :friends:

  7. Top of Hill Drive in Whaley Bridge today 220m asl taken sometime in the late morning. I haven't been up that part of the road yet but the pic is taken just a few avenues away from where I live, the picture doesn't really give a indication of the snow depth but walking down Williamson Road a hour ago it was still a good 8inches deep *5 minimally* in places.

Thats lovely, keep them coming Snow Joke.

I'm heading up their this weekend with the dog, hopefully still be around.

    P.S - Surely you own a 4x4 lol ?

  8. It not a polar low. Polar lows are notoriously hard to forcast and thats been seen for a few days. That is tonights 972mb low centre. It gides for a bit and then develops again in the irish sea.

I don't see it forecasted on the charts and they are the latest FAX....

You can't really forecast a Polar Low anyways...

    Lets see.
