  1. 57.4mm of rain on Tuesday in the end. Wettest summers here since 1980: 2007: 353.1mm 1997: 290.0mm 1982: 282.7mm 2017: 263.6mm (so far) Already the 4th wettest in 37 years (and most likely since 1963, looking at the local figures).
  2. Heavy rain from 6am this morning with a brief break for a few hours during the afternoon before the rain resumed this evening. Now up to 51.2mm since midnight making it comfortably the wettest day here since the floods on 25th June 2007. Cold too with a max of 14.6C. Some localised flooding at the moment but nothing major. The stream at the end of the street has raised by a metre though.
  3. The dreadful weather today continues here. After a brief dry spell this afternoon we're back to heavy rain again. We're now up to 43.2mm since midnight. It has been cold too with a max of 14.6C.
  4. Today is utterly dire. Heavy rain all day so far and a total already of 30.6mm. This summer is turning into a very wet one in this location, June was 200% of normal, July was 130% of normal and August is already at 80% and climbing rapidly: Wettest summers here since 1980: 2007: 353.1mm 1997: 290.0mm 1982: 282.7mm 1980: 262.8mm 1992: 262.2mm 2004: 259.0mm 2012: 252.4mm 2017: 236.6mm (so far)
  5. 15.8C to the 6th 0.3C below the 1961-1990 average 1.2C below the 1981-2010 average http://hadobs.metoffice.com/hadcet/cet_info_mean.html
  6. Confirmed as 16.8C, 0.1C above the 1981-2010 average: http://hadobs.metoffice.com/hadcet/cetml1659on.dat August only needs to be 16.4C (equal to the 1981-2010 average) for this to be the warmest summer since 2006.
  7. 1991-2017 averages as they stand with the figure in brackets in comparison to the 1981-2010 averages : JAN: 4.6C (+0.2C) FEB: 4.8C (+0.4C) MAR: 6.8C (+0.2C) APR: 8.9C (+0.4C) MAY: 11.9C (+0.2C) JUN: 14.6C (+0.1C) JUL: 16.7C (equal) AUG: 16.5C (+0.1C) SEP: 14.2C (+0.2C) OCT: 10.9C (+0.2C) NOV: 7.4C (+0.3C) DEC: 4.9C (+0.3C) Winter: 4.8C (+0.3C) Spring: 9.2C (+0.3C) Summer: 15.9C (equal) Autumn: 10.9C (+0.3C) So on average the summer months aren't any worse, but there's a definite trend of less of / little increase compared to other months / seasons. I would imagine the reason we see such weird patterns (like the warmer 90s summers) is because natural cycles affect things as well as background warming. Indeed, the 1988-2008 period saw mean temperatures much higher than background warming might suggest, which could mean recent years have simply returned to trend. Winters on average flipped in a similar way post-1988, but dropped back between 2008-2013, before warming again in recent years.
  8. Yes, up until mid-July it was pretty warm here too. Despite the last couple of weeks not being as good, July still finished with 22 out of 31 days topping 20C and a mean max of 21.0C. Compare that with 2011 where only 11 days managed it and its easy to see its not been that bad. We're actually on course for the 3rd warmest summer since 1976 here. We have had quite a lot of rain though (199.2mm so far), which gives the strange possibility that we might also record the wettest since 2007 at the same time.
  9. Finally just had the first thunderstorm of the year! Only rained for a short while, but dropped from 19.0C to 14.9C in 10mins and gave us 4.0mm with a max rainrate of 131.0mm/hr. Lots of thunder though, almost constant for a while.
  10. There's a lot of heat over Europe and it wouldnt take much to bring it here (even briefly), so I'm thinking warmer than average: 17.1C
  11. Better to get that out of the way in Autumn and hope it doesn't last through winter too. Nothing is more grim than a cool Autumn (especially November) and then a switch to above average +NAO setup come December.
  12. Seasonal threads are usually opened on the second week of the second month of the preceding season, so although it feels early, its actually isn't. The spring one was closed temporarily for a couple of weeks as someone opened it on 3rd January.
  13. June was a good summer month here, the warmest since 1976 in fact. It also had 110% of average sunshine. Strangely it was the wettest since 2007, with 200% of normal rainfall, but this is deceiving as over three quarters of that fell on three days (two of which during the night) with only 25.0mm on the other 27 days. Last June had a mean temp 2C lower, 91.0mm of rain and just 135 hours of sunshine. That was a poor month.
  14. There's some impressive ones to the North low on the horizon right now. Annoyingly it has clouded over before I could get a picture. Agree it's been a poor year for them. These are the first I've seen.
  15. A close to average month, though mainly due to high minima. 16.9C
  16. Wettest months here in the last 20 years: June 2007: 206.9mm June 1997: 155.4mm January 2008: 141.8mm April 2012: 139.6mm September 1993: 134.5mm April 2000: 132.0mm August 2004: 130.9mm June 1998: 119.3mm June 2017: 117.2mm (to the 29th) Junes ending in seven aren't the best when it comes to being dry!
  17. We had 49.0mm of rain from midnight to midnight, which is the most since the floods on 25th June 2007. Fortunately it fell a lot slower this time so no problems. June as a whole is up to 111.2mm now, which is more than the 111.0mm we had all spring! A very strange month overall, as sunshine is already at 105% for the month and the mean temperature is 2.6C above average and 0.6C warmer than the previous warmest in 2003.
  18. 35.6mm here now. If we manage another 10mm today then it'll be the wettest day since the floods on 25th June 2007.
  19. A bit of a grotty one today with persistent rain and a strong wind. Rather cold aswell with a max of just 12.5C. 30.2mm so far since midnight.
  20. A mostly cloudy day with sunny spells and occasional light rain showers in the afternoon and the last hour or so. Much cooler than further south but still pleasant. Max Temp: 22.6C Min Temp: 13.4C Mean Wind: 9mph E Max Gust: 17mph Rainfall: 0.2mm Sunshine: 4.4hrs Currently Mostly cloudy after a light shower passed through. Temp is 18.1C.
  21. The CET looks very low to me too, considering here we're now on 17.2C (+3.5C) to the 19th. Its looking likely we'll obliterate 2003 and possibly beat 1976.
  22. A lot hazier today, but a very light north-easterly breeze has kicked in which has stopped the temperature rise in its tracks. The dewpoint on the other hand is another matter. Its currently 27.8C with a dewpoint of 22.1C. I dont think Ive ever felt such weather in this country, its uncomfortable to say the least!
  23. This has without a doubt been the most horrid hot spell for me as Ive been bedridden for 4 days with the flu during it! Its currently 29C inside and 27C with a 20C dewpoint outside. Thank goodness for the cooler day here tomorrow.
  24. The 19th June 2000 remains the second warmest day ever here with a max of 31.0C. Only 3rd August 1990 on 34.0C has been warmer since 1980. The 18th was 'only' 24.9C due to that onshore breeze.
  25. Clear and sunny almost throughout with a little cloud in the early evening. The max was the highest of any day since June 2011 and the 5th warmest in June since 1980 at this site. Only three other days have been warmer since August 2001. Max Temp: 28.9C Min Temp: 15.3C Mean Wind: 7mph S Max Gust: 13mph Rainfall: None Sunshine: 16.4hrs Currently clear and warm with a temp of 18.4C. The mean for the month is now 16.9C, some 0.8C above the previous highest in 2003.
