  1. Hadley is confirmed at 2.9C, so 1.5C below the 1981-2010 average and the coldest since 2010: http://hadobs.metoffice.com/hadcet/mly_cet_mean_sort.txt Winter came in at 4.33C, so about 0.2C below the 1981-2010 average.
  2. The last back to back ice days here were in December 2010 when we recorded two in a row on three separate occasions. January and February have been poor for even getting single ice days in recent years, with just three in total since 1987. Of more interest here is that today's ice day is the latest on record, the previous being 21st February 1986. As for tomorrow, it's almost certain to beat the record low March maxima. The holder of that one is 4th March 1987 with a max of 1.9C - a figure that is certain to go tomorrow even if we do get above freezing.
  3. An exceptionally cold day which was dry with sunny spells. The morning started with a 100% cover of 0.5cm, but this thawed mostly by midday in the sun despite being well below freezing. The evening then saw frequent moderate to heavy snow showers arrive, taking the snowcover to around 1cm. The max of -0.4C was the first ice day in February since 2008 and the latest date to see one on record going back to 1980. The windchill was also exceptional, dropping to -10.3C in the evening. Max Temp: -0.4C Min Temp: -4.3C Mean Wind: 17mph E Max Gust: 32mph Rainfall: Unknown (frozen) Sunshine: 2.2hrs Currently cold and windy with moderate snow and a temp of -3.7C and dewpoint of -6.7C.
  4. Starting to get a few decent showers now with everything accumulating and blowing around, perhaps around 1cm so far. Windchill just hit -10C too, bitter!
  5. We've had a few showers of powdery snow giving around 0.5cm of cover again. Its quite hard to tell exactly though as its very dry and blowing around. Rather cold too with the temp dropping to -4.3C in the last shower. If this can just keep going for a few hours we'll be set!
  6. We're in another gap for the next half an hour or so by the looks. Those showers I was watching earlier have missed us by a couple of miles to the North! There's a few behind it so onto those. Does feel a bit carrot on a stick though!
  7. Cooler than average, but close to normal rainfall: 5.6C and 65mm
  8. I'm glad people are getting something and just hope we can join them. The radar looks a bit funny, I don't think it extends out into the North Sea very well. You have to laugh though, what's the chance of this over 24 hours of precipitation, haha. I'd love to know the meteorological explanation for that!
  9. I'm watching these now. They're heading this way: For ONCE just make it!
  10. This morning's 0.5cm has remained in the shade, but has pretty much gone where the sun has been on it. It just shows the power of the sun at this point in the season as the temp hasn't got above freezing today.
  11. Its amazing how the temperature drops when you do get a decent shower. We've just fallen to -3.7C now after that recent shower, which is actually the minimum temp today. The ice day looks safe now at least.
  12. Moderate snow here too (finally), but despite a temp of -2.6C its not really settling yet as the ground is a bit warm from the sun. Might do better once the sun goes down.
  13. The wind appears to have changed to a more ENE direction so things are perhaps looking up. Those showers looked to be heading NE of us but seem to be coming straight onshore now. Fingers crossed.
  14. Havent had as much as a flurry since 8am this morning. The 0.5cm pitiful cover is nearly gone in the sun. The temperature is just about holding in there for an ice day, the max so far is -0.4C. The North sea looks as barren as ever for us, so that could be it.
  15. Look at that massive gap to the ESE of here. The weather gods really are having a laugh now.
  16. Yes, its ridiculous, but the radar explains everything. This shows 12 hour precipitation: Our very own hole!
  17. Due to the severe depths of snow involved, measuring this morning's snow could only be done with a tape measure: I think we might need the army to come in. We'll be cut off for days with this.
  18. Not even half a cm here this morning, grass is still visible. What a complete and utter let down. A potent easterly with -16C 850hPa temps and we've still had knack all. I give up!
  19. Apart from the odd light flurry it doesn't look like it, at least for the next few hours anyway.
  20. Snow shield working well as usual: What's causing that is a mystery to me.
  21. They're coming in a north-easterly direction. Unfortunately for us there's just a big gap on the radar in that direction, you couldnt make it up!
  22. This is just ridiculous now, the North sea is totally dead in the direction the showers should be coming from if they were to hit us. We have barely a dusting from one light shower half an hour ago but it looks like at least a 2-3hr wait now.
  23. I've always wanted to experience a proper easterly spell with sub -15C 850hPa temps, something which even 1991 failed to reach as the colder uppers were further south. My hope is that tonight when those colder uppers arrive we get peppered with showers because today has been very disappointing indeed so far. We did wake up with 1cm of snow so our 5 year and one month spell without any measurable snow in winter is officially over, however by midday it was pretty much gone. The main issue has been that we've had hours between showers and as a result we reached a temp of 1.9C. We've only had two ice days in January and February in the last 26 years, so tomorrow has the potential to be quite notable. That alone has me interested but if this event doesn't deliver notable snow then it'll be a bust in my view as synoptics generally don't get much better than this for us. Ill reserve judgement on the entire cold spell when its finished however.
  24. Hopefully when the coldest air arrives tonight the showers get a bit more organised as they have been more miss than hit today. Annoyingly, they also look more frequent and potent further to the north already, something which wasn't really supposed to happen until tomorrow. All of the snowcover from this morning that has been in the sun has melted now, despite going no higher than 1.9C. The sun has a bit of heat in it so that even during one of the showers when it dropped to -1.1C, it quickly melted on impact.
  25. This morning's 1cm cover is almost gone in the sunshine now . The temperature has risen far more than I expected considering the uppers, we're now up at 1.9C, which is actually warmer than yesterday. The ice days were always supposed to be tomorrow and perhaps Thursday, but it isn't looking too likely is it?
