  1. I remember it well , I was working in it. Cold wasn't the word to describe it.
  2. I'm thinking of making a film about the British Weather, it will be called 50 Shades Of S... te.
  3. Oh joy, another bucket full of rain, and yet another day practically written off work wise. I sometimes read articles reporting on skills shortages in the Building Trade. I wonder why that could be?
  4. I have to confess I'm desperate for a dry spell, This incessant rain is seriously starting to grate on me.
  5. Know what you mean, the bloody wind and rain plays havoc with my work right throughout the year. Doesn't get any easier as you get older either.
  6. I'll just settle for an end to this poxy rain. It's about as much use as a plasticine poker . Work wise it's gone pretty quiet anyway , so it doesn't make too much difference .
  7. Have to say that I quite agree, to me, it just illustrates what a shameless marketing racket the whole thing has become. They can't even wait until Boxing day is over before they start pushing sales, hoping to screw even more money out of people. It just cheapens the whole thing in my opinion. I'll give it a month before Easter Eggs are on the shelves.
  8. 60 years ago tomorrow, I'd have been playing with my gifts from Santa whilst the coldest winter since the 1740s got underway.
  9. Absolutely p.... ing down here in Somerset. Merry Christmas from the British Weather. What a complete heap of sh.. te
  10. In my almost 63 years on this earth, I reckon that I could count on the fingers of 2 hands the number of winters in this country that could in any way be described as being severe, or noteworthy in terms of cold or snow. Sort of puts things into perspective really. Most years are about as interesting as watching paint dry.
  11. The C H only comes on for an hour or so in the morning. In the evenings we use the log burner with a fan on top. Wood costs me little, or nothing. I've bought one load for £75, and picked up the rest from the roadside. (Always have a chainsaw in the van with me) The lounge has been around 21 degrees all week. When you come in from outside, you really notice how efficiently the logburner warms the ground floor of the house. We didn't have CH years ago, only a coal fire in the sitting room, so it's hardly a hardship really. A bit of hard graft gives me free heat.
  12. I wouldn't be surprised to be honest. The weather impacts me more during Autumn, and Winter. Freezing temperatures and mortar isn't a good combination, neither is incessant rain. If it's a succession of low pressure systems it isn't any better, ok, it might be warmer, but it still puts the kibosh on things work wise. If I have to stay at home, I'd much sooner look at clear blue skies and frost rather than the alternative. At least, so far, this year some poor devils have been spared the trauma of being flooded out.
  13. Seeing as how I was born in 1960, I've seen quite few "Once in a lifetime" jobs . Trust me , you'll probably see plenty more.
  14. As much as I've enjoyed this cold spell, I need it to warm up a bit now. Not been able to work for a week, and I need to push a job on . No work = no money coming in.
  15. As we all get to find out, old age doesn't come alone unfortunately.
  16. Working outside as I do, I have found that I function better in colder weather than I do in heat. As for health problems , either isn't particularly beneficial for anyone. Having a heart condition I have to watch what I do in cold weather, as the cold constricts the arteries within the heart . I have also nursed ,and seen someone die slowly of malignant melanoma 23 years ago. You pays your money , and takes your choice.
  17. Lounge at 21 degrees with the woodstove going full bore. Residual heat into the adjacent kitchen and hall around 17 .
  18. I know it well. Takes you past the old Westbury Quarry. I'm a Shipham boy originally, lived in Cheddar for 20 years. I Policed the area for 3 years at the end of the 90s as well. You're right though, best view in Somerset.
  19. Sharp frost here this morning. It certainly makes a nice change from wind, and incessant rain, which is about as much use as a chocolate teapot. I should imagine the retail sector might feel the benefit for the next week or so as well, most people that I speak to much prefer this sort of weather to be out and about. A lot of winters in the 60s /80s were bitterly cold but snowless around here. The notable exceptions being 62/3 Feb 78, 31st Dec 78, Jan 7th? 82.
  20. You're right , I'm the same, as you get on a bit you tend to mellow. I'd sooner see them running about these days.
